To my chagrin, I am an American Platinum member. While I hate the delays as much as anyone else, I cannot help but tip my hat to the evil genius of it's pilots.

/hate to lose all my miles flown, but ready to jump ship to a better frequent flyer program / group

TFA noted that a merger with USAir was fine by the regulators, but a merger with Delta would have been near verboten. IS it simply because Delta is already so big?

i feel so sorry for people who have to fly for a living, i haven't been on a plane in 20 years, and it is quite likely, unless somebody else is paying, never will again.

My husband was an aircraft mechanic for 25 years (USAF and Delta Airlines) before he took an early retirement from Delta and went on active duty with the Air National Guard. I ran the story about American blaming spilled sodas on the loose seats and he confirmed that it could indeed be the culprit. However, maintenance being farmed out to contractors (in Mexico, in the case of Delta) who are being paid to do only certain maintenance items and not one thing more is really to blame, he thinks. When a jet came out of periodic maintenance under the watch of a Delta mechanic, they covered the jet from front to back, looking at everything, and not signing off until it was shiny as a new penny from end to end. Now that they have unlicensed "maintainers" in Mexico are doing the periodic maintenance (signed off and inspected by one licensed mechanic) the jets are starting to look like crap and things are starting to break. Delta doesn't want to pay one dime more than they have to. I'm sure their execs still get their multi-million dollar bonuses though.

Apparently American is following this business model.

FTA: American is bankrupt, and the bankruptcy proceeding-while designed to restore the airline to health-has ignited a multifront civil war pitting executives against their own employees.

Not to sound all pro-union-ey or anything, but isn't that how things normally work?

Step 1) Executives: "Be more productive for lower pay so the company makes more, our stock price goes up, and we get bonuses."
Step 2) Employees: "Give us pay increases larger than our productivity gains and cut our workloads."
Step 3) Negotiate.

30 hour transatlantic? It took me 30 hours to get from LAX to Orlando on AA. First flight gets canceled, second flight takes off, gets over Texas, then turns back to Salt Lake City after cabin pressure drops. Flight from SLC runs three hours late and I have to catch a joining flight in Dallas... which I missed. Next flight from DFW to MCO arrives another 2 hours late. So... about 30 hours total from when my first flight was supposed to leave LAX to when I actually landed in Orlando in what was originally booked as a nonstop flight in an exit row with a window seat.

Fark you, AA.

Same here, Sadly when I did look around, American is one of the better programs I thought. Things seem better this week but who knows. I am not flying again until the end of the month thankfully.

Its been a while since I was on a plane too. Last time was a private charter flight from work and that was the best experience Ive ever had on a commercial plane. Last summer I was supposed to attend a work function in Atlanta but the east coast quake and a hurricane prevented me from that. I owe mother nature one for that.

that is true about some maintenance being done in mexico, but it's only for one fleet type. delta has the same heavy maintenance being performed elsewhere for particular fleet types (san antonio, hong kong, etc).

So do you think contract maintainers are more thorough and competant than licensed airline employees, and more willing to pay attention to details they aren't being paid to pay attention to?

The bigger issue is that the US Airways merger would see American Airlines management sacked, and the labour of American Airlines would keep their jobs and benefits, creating a healthier company with less management bloat.

You can see why American management denied the US Airways merger.

If any American Flight Crew is reading this, let me just say that I salute your actions so far, and wish you much luck in the following months. Aviation labour is treated like crap by aviation management. While they are sucking down bonuses and high income at a nine to five, flight crew is sleeping in some dingy motel for the absolute minimum federally mandated rest period, paid the bare minimum that barely covers bills and debts for aviation training, and generally being seen as a tool rather then a person.

Gimme my old (1944) Mustang anyday. Since she's been airworthy I have never flown commercial in North America.
