For harsh language, oh my. Someone fetch the ref's fainting couch.

'What kind of (expletive) call was that?'

OUT FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR

Can we get a Florida tag?

I can understand punishing him, but six weeks? Too much.

Good lord, I'm okay with a 15-yarder for cussing out a ref (then let the kid get cussed out by his coach). Six goddamn weeks is retarded.

I would say 15 yards and ejection from the game, but yeah, 6 weeks seems harsh.

I'd be willing to go up to an ejection for maybe multiple swear words or a second offense...or "hate speech"-type slurs (maybe an extra game for going with the latter).

'What kind of (expletive) call was that?'

I've heard worse from little league coaches.

Well, was it a (expletive) call or not?

2012-10-10 12:08:18 PM
I was threatened with ejection for throwing up my hands and saying "Oh, COME ON..." after a ref blew her whistle three times in two minutes on ticky-tacky shiat during a soccer game when I was in high school. fark high school refs and their egos; this kid really doesn't deserve a suspension.

6 weeks for swearing? This may be the most retarded thing I've ever heard. I'm sure Goodell is taking notes, though

In 7 years of umpiring dad's club and little league, I heard much worse. The key is to understand how to let a situation diffuse. I never had to throw anyone out of a game, ever. You let the coach blow up, have their say, and if you keep your cool, then 99% of the time they'll come talk to you later and apologize.

If his dad had worked for ESPN instead of the Buccaneers the ref would have been fired.

You have a range of suspension time to give that covers infractions like threatening officials and hitting them. This fits right in, give him the max.

2012-10-10 12:21:45 PM
6ft1 and 170 lbs? And he's playing linebacker? Should be thankful for the suspension so he doesn't get broken in half.

Little league? Since the coach is a role model for young kids, I wouldn't let that slide.

it's heavy handed, but apparently they've got a problem with kids getting out of hand. if you play, you should know the rules. if you know the rules, you shouldn't go there. fark him.

I love that they make refs and umps infallible, and then punish those for calling them out on the fact that they're not.

2012-10-10 12:35:51 PM
This is Florida, remember. People there can get downright riot-y about their football, so I'm not surprised that the governing body has resorted to death-penalty style punishments for infractions involving officials.

We had better get the ACLU on this case quickly! They are taking away this snowflake's freedom of speech.

Not in high school. There's always a few kids who are already damned close to NFL-sized. These are the ones who will be getting Div 1 scholarship offers. Most everyone else is a little scrawny by adult standards.

If he knew the rules/consequences, not much more to say about this issue.

/the rules committee might want to look at adjusting the punishment for cussing out a ref during the off-season.
//or they might not.
///doesn't matter at all in this situation.

Dat ref shoulda knowed he'd get called a mother farker when he volunteered to ref. He got what was coming to him. FIGHT THE MAN! You gots rights to abused dem refs! GTFO AND STFU ref!

2012-10-10 12:42:08 PM
what kinda expletive call is that? Gets you the same penalty as making contact with or hitting an official? Might as well go for broke and throw a punch if that's the punishment for both.

/not really but it seems kind of stupid that the penalty is the same.

2012-10-10 12:47:03 PM
im not even sure that qualifies as cussin out the ref. he said the call was bullshiat. He didnt call the ref an a-hole or otherwise disparage him.

FTFA: Schiano was ejected during a 31-19 victory over Lennard on Sept. 28 for using profane language with a game official which carries with it an automatic six-week, "Level 2" suspension (which covers anything from use of foul language, hitting or making threats to an official, or excessive physical contact against an opponent deemed to exceed normal competitive bounds).

Seriously? Swearing has the same penalty as HITTING AN OFFICIAL?

2012-10-10 12:51:03 PM
Way too harsh. It's not like he plowed into an unsuspecting lineman's knees on a victory formation or something stupid and dirty like that.

Im guessing that actually hitting an official gets you suspended from school (not just league sports) and the police can get involved too. One crosses a league boundary while the other crosses legal and societal and cultural boundaries. This would vary of course regionally and depending upon how much money a kid's parents have.

linebacker AND tight end... maybe he gets credit for tackling himself?

There's other things at work here, I'm sure. That said, it's still a high school student, and Americans labor under the delusion that they should be more respectful toward adults.

/once got a flag for just cursing

Berkley Prep is a small private college prep school that plays football in Florida's "A" class against other small private schools (or at least they did when I was in high school in the Tampa area years ago). I'm guessing their center is probably a buck ninety eight soaking wet.

Probably has a vindictive coach. I was 6'4" 175-180 in high school and the coach, who hated me from being the smartass on the baseball team, put me on O-Line. Never mind that I could throw the ball about 70 yards, I wasn't fast enough to be a QB, whatever the fark that means. I obviously couldn't block bigger kids for shiat, so I rode the pine. Good times.

It's all good, though. The angry asshole was the special needs teacher and got fired a few years later for verbally abusing his students.

So the Ref is a dickbag-power-tripper... That's the point of having the whistle and the little yellow flag.
