Assistant police chief Jeff Curtis says the African spurred tortoise was spotted Monday afternoon and that it was 3 to 4 feet wide.

...

Baird says he owns nine tortoises and recently moved to Logan. He says Timmy the 21-year-old tortoise has escaped twice in a week and he doesn't know how the animal is getting out.

I'm guessing this owner isn't the sharpest knife in the box.

I'm guessing the owner is some sort of hare.

Atention all you single ladies, I've got a feeling that this man who admits to the world that he's been regularly outsmarted by a turtle just might be available!

Ha! The same thing happened in my neighborhood in Houston last week.

I think I've found my next pet! When the cats start to die off (they're old anyway) I'm totally getting one of these tortoises. I doubt the wife will mind.

Please allow me to repeat the confusion of how something that, in TFA is described as 3 to 4 feet wide, escapes...twice...without it being obvious via which large gaping hole it is escaping.

You can't run away from your problems, unless you have a problem with some kind of tortoise. (hopefully not obscure)

If I covered all the bases (no holes in the fencing, fencing high enough, nothing obvious to climb on) I'd be really confused as to how a tortoise this large could escape too.

On the other hand I probably wouldn't own a tortoise in the first place. I prefer my pets to be affectionate, and my wife doesn't believe in caging birds, so we're pretty much limited to mammals.

It's like a Nubian... no one knows.

Maybe he's really a hot springs turtle, and he flew out.

Jack Handy? Sounds like his kind of aphorism.

My guess would be "neighbor's kids"

I had a russian tortoise (JT for Just Tortoise) that ran away a few months ago. Very fast bugger, indeed. I had just added an iguana to the mix, and he made a run for it a few days later. I have no idea if these things are related, but he had been just fine doing laps around the living room until then. :(

Only reason I hadn't assumed such is because I don't think that most kids have access to an engine hoist...
