(Red Hot Russia)   Boy from Russia dreamed to ride in a DeLorean DMC-12 since he saw "Back to the Future". Before his birthday his mom published an ad in the newspaper. And though there are only two such cars in Russia, both owners agreed to give a surprise to the boy   (redhotrussia.com) divider line 26

Therefore demonstrating to the child that life is full of unexpected disappointments?

I doubt the kid realizes that DeLoreans don't come standard with flux capacitors. At least Russia hasn't advanced technologically past 1985, so he's got that going for him.

Guy down the street has a DeLorean, so I get a kick out of this.

//no he won't let me drive it, and while they are much less impressive in person, they are still pretty cool.

They actually *LOOK* fast, but looks are deceiving. I knew a guy who had one. According to him, it was a pig compared to the other cars he had owned. Even his old Datsun 240Z was faster.

I just adore the english translation. You simply can't read that without a brutally stereotyped accent.

Anyway, the DeLorean was anemic. It had a 150 horse that was hamstringed by the catalytic converters. It casually strolled to sixty in what...9 seconds? *Wiki* Ouch...10.5 according to Road and Track.

we were watching the first Back to the Future last week and it hit me that the movie was set 30 years back (1955 from 1985). Now we're only a little over 2 years from it being 30 years in the future so where's my damn hoverboard?

WTF, Russia?

Back in the 90s, someone down the road from me bought a used DeLorean, however I never got the chance to ride in it because it was always in the shop. He put more money into repairs then it was worth in the first year alone and then decided it wasn't worth owning one. I have no idea what ever happened to that hunk of junk.

As collectible cars from the 80's go, Deloreans are pretty cheap. The last I noticed they were going for $6k-$14k. Testarossas are still running $20k-30k for crapped out specimens. That's still nothing compared to Jon Voight's Labaron.

Beyond the fact that the car is over-rated, a young boy's dream gets fulfilled. He'll have plenty of time after that to become a jaded/cynical poster on FARK like the rest of us. I say kudos for the owner for making it come true.

Wow that article is a distillation of modern Russia right there: a hot Russian woman, big "businessman" recovering from an assassination attempt, and a core of decency under a lot of weirdness. No vodak, though, which is sad.

You can get them for that cheap, but they'll be in lousy shape.

I read an article a while back about a guy who runs a parts/restoration business for the DMC-12. He said that to have one in good driveable shape you're going to be out about $40,000. Whether you buy one already redone or do it yourself, the final tally will be in that range. That's probably one of the reasons they're fairly reasonable... few folks want to spend even that much on a vehicle that was just something of a dog. Visually distinctive but nothing special otherwise.

But yeah, that kid's mom isn't bad looking at all.
