There's a high school here that's had at least six football players go to the doctor for concussion symptoms before any games were played. Not sure how they're learning to tackle there, but something's not right.

Sounds like a coach needs to be fired.

Yup. Practice concussions should be rare to nonexistent

I played in an eight-man league. My Sophomore year, we had one player kicked off the team (deservedly), and three others quit in sympathy. We ended up with eight players. Our coach cancelled our season, despite our desire to play it out. He was right. We would have gotten destroyed in our final games.

/my Senior year, we finished as league champions

Eight man? Pussies! SIX man is where it's at. Had seven of us on the team sophomore year (after report cards), and we played out. Hell, our girls went to the playoffs in volleyball AND basketball with just six chicks.

You don't even want to go there. Our girl's basketball team was league champions in 77 and 78, but in my senior year, they went undefeated, and won the Northern California Small Schools Championship, playing a school in the finals whose average height was taller than our tallest player. We fast-breaked them to death. To add the icing on the cake, our girl's coach was also our boy's coach and our boys had a 106 game LOSING streak. We had three players who were All NorCal, Jesus, our boys sucked, but our girls kicked ass! And they were gorgeous too! Only one dog on the whole team. And she kicked ass too.

They must have been playing a team that runs the hurry up offense.

It is super dangerous.

Way more dangerous than letting the players continue to get bigger and faster.

I'm from a small farm town and we used to play all the big city schools (some of the schools were about as big as our town). My senior year me and a couple of other guys were out for the season before it even started. (We all had shoulder injuries, and all got them in different ways, it was kind of weird) Anyway by the time the season started we were down to 19 players dressed (some games we only had 14 or 15). so we played Ironman football. We knew we were going to lose every game but we still played them all. And I still wished i could have been playing out there getting my ass kicked with the rest of them.

stupid quote isnt working for me atm, but why the hate in SoCals/SoCal ? Born in San Jose and moved about a bit but have lived in socal for 31 years now after idaho and its not a bad place. Some places, like San Diego , are awesome. Sure, I would prefer to live in Sonoma county but unless i can sell this house, i am stuck. And I dont hate on Norcals, but i do hate on the giants and the niners . Just Sayin

Six man football is great. I'm not even sure how you would play 8 man. It seems like you'd have too many backs or receivers and not enough linemen.

Oh, don't get me wrong. SoCal is a wonderful place. However much of the resources (water, timber and gold) that helped create that greatness have come at the expense of Northern California. Our county seat was the proposed capitol for the State of Jefferson Link. The secession movement was tongue-in-cheek perhaps but they were "kidding on the square".

There is real resentment in extreme Northern California and a feeling of abandonment and lack of representation in California's government. For years, our roads were primitive dirt one-lane death-traps and this didn't change until the '70s when the area's representative, Randolph Collier insisted that I-5 connect Oregon and California, instead of 101 on the coast.

I love California, but the north state feels neglected and overlooked until SoCal needs something. Then they just take it.

Five man line, three man backfield. Ends are eligible receivers. Some schools play on an eighty-yard field. Either a 3-3-2 or a 4-2-2 defense usually. We always went for the 2-point conversion, until my senior year when we had a girl kick PATs.

3 linemen, 4 eligible receivers, quarterback. You throw the ball a lot, I'd imagine.

Not necessarily. I'd imagine it's really hard to defend a zone running scheme with only 8 defenders, especially at HS talent level.

Eight-on-eight football is for chumps. In the highest ranks of Class 7A Alabama Football, anyone who is prepared to field less than 250 men on any one play is a coward. And if you have a problem with that, then I suggest you make a visit to West North St. Laughing Mantis Football Academy and visit the 1998 Class 7A Football State Championship Cemetery. We lost a lot of good young men that day, but it was worth it. West North St. Laughing Mantis Football Academy, home of the 1998 Class 7A Football State Champions.

My senior year in high school we had 13 players on the football team, for a regular 11-11 league. We played out every game and went 2-6. Our huddle-breaking chant was "Baaaaaker's -- DOZEN!"

Never left the field my senior year in 6-man. A heck of a lot of running! One year we had 6 girls total in high school, including one foreign exchange student. They played through volleyball and were state ranked in basketball.

Always enjoyed being the underdog.

My alma mater which is not a tiny school canceled their football season this year after 2 games.
They weren't sure if they had enough interested kids to start the season, but they scrapped together enough to field a team. The school board was largely against them fielding a team at all.

They lost by 70 points the first week and 50 something points the second week and suffered several injuries.

The athletic director told the players to let him know if they didn't want to continue the season by
1) telling him directly, or
2) not showing up to practice.

On the Monday he was to meet with them, only 9 players showed up who would be healthy enough to practice, so they called it a season and went home.

I guess many of the athletes are more interested in focusing on lacrosse and soccer.

The 2 district high schools are merging into one school next year, so it was the last season the team could have existed. It was the OTHER district high school who beat them by 70 the first week of the season.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I scored four touchdowns in one game?

/I maintain that participation in football from Pop Warner to high school will drop over the next few years..due to 1) budgets and 2) health issues....it won't happen overnight, but just gradually over the next several years...but if a few more former NFL'ers wind up drooling on the TV screen while sitting in the witness chair or there's another high profile suicide and it will accelerate the process. Insurance premiums, which are already ridiculously expensive for football, will skyrocket and the school districts will say "wait a minute"....Not saying I want this to happen, but I believe it will.
