Ive had a personal day set aside for a doc appointment...but now I have to figure out which one gets my hours.

It's a glorious and pretty game... absolutely love the new xcom.

I am really considering getting this game, but I am not really a fan of the RTS genre.

Dishonored also looks awesome. So many awesome games, so little time...

I feel bad for people who still have to sound convincingly sick over the phone. It's pretty well known in my office that any email saying "I don't feel well, taking a sick day" translates to either "hungover" or "fark this job, I can't take this shiat today" depending on the person.

/best bet is just to sound tired

Imperious Rex!: I am really considering getting this game, but I am not really a fan of the RTS genre.

It's turn-based like the original

I'll probably be picking it up when it goes on sale (hopefully Christmas). Too preoccupied with other games at the moment

It's not an RTS, it's turn-based.

I wish my current rig could run it. And that I had the $50 to spend on it.

Just beat the first mission. Game is amazing.

Argh, I'd only been following this peripherally but now that the reviews are out it looks like a lot of fun. Stupid residency. And computer being in the shop. And having recently started Torchlight II.

/I'll wait for the Steam sale

Another one I need to pick up at some point.

Right now I'm splitting time between Guild Wars 2 and Torchlight 2, with Borderlands 2 waiting for some attention as well

The maps aren't randomized, and blasting through the same gas station in Canada and Nigeria can be a bit of a logical disconnect,

And this is supposed to be X-Com? So I guess I will wait for either a giant patch or the price to drop 40 bucks.

I own a copy of Civilization V and that game is not a good recommendation for other games by the same company. Civ IV, on the other hand, is brilliant.

The painfully restrictive demo and the atrociously outdated character models used in its cutscenes were not enough to deter me from pre-ordering. I played the hell out of XCOM: UFO Defense on my PS1 back in the day, and I'm certain to play the hell out of this, starting tonight.

/And I'll STILL replay the mission if even one of my guys is KIA

Bah, screw that noise. Rolling with an absolute barrage of punches is part of XCOM.

The whole point of rookies is to have them kick in the doors and take the shots while your vets clean up. That's the XCOM way.

I think you can even give them red shirts

i was doing so well in iron man until all of my good soldiers died in the alien base mission save for one and the rookies get their asses kicked so bad that I can't recover

XCom, Dishonored and Retro City Rampage all release today. Seriously guyz, WTF?!

/XCom is sitting at my apartment office
//Have to wait until next paycheck for Dishonored
///At least I have Borderlands 2 keeping me busy

I won't judge, I took four days off to play Borderlands 2(had leftovers from last year they were bugging me to take).

I'm stuck going to a concert with a beautiful Thai woman. XCom will have to wait for tomorrow night.

I absolutely can't 'get' FTL. It's not fun for me. There's no sense of acomplishment or achievement, and I don't get the emotional payoff of rubbing one out or watching TV. What's the deal? I've tried a few hours and just...can't get why people seem to be shiatting the streets for it. It's my first Roguelike, so I'm assuming they're just not for me.

Also, anyone comment on Dishonoured? Is it a Bioshock similar game? Good story in an action/shooter game?

2012-10-09 08:37:48 PM
So how do deaths/saves work.

Do you get a real save after each level, or is it more like a continue where you left off when you laste exited? When a guy dies is is automatically dead forever, or is he only dead forever if you choose to continue after a mission instead of choosing to replay the level?

2012-10-09 08:40:28 PM
Also, now that this is out, Firaxis should finally start working Alpha Centauri 2. Seriously guys, what's the hold up?

Dead is dead. You can even kill the process and it'll stop and save first. (Although I suspect that killing the power to the PC immediately after an unwanted death might... _might_... undo it. Maybe. Hard on the PC though.)

They were the reason I was scared shiatless of doing terror missions. First troop out of the plane sees a Snakeman, and I'm screaming "FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"

Had one like that an hour ago. Positioned to storm a building, and had two cryssalids, a zombie, and three floaters appear on _both_ sides of me. And the floaters spawned within nose-picking range. Pinned to the side of a building with no useful cover whatsoever. Everybody on both sides had full yellow shields. I may have used up a month's worth of luck getting out of that one. No fatalities. Nobody even got damaged.

In reading the reviews, it looks like maybe there is not as much reason in this new version to keep a particular guy? There are not as many traits, and they are all the same for everyone? In the original version, you would get a lot of variation which made it interesting; some were more likely to panic, some could run, some were psi resistant, some were better shots. Sounds like that aspect is gone, is that correct?.

What I loved about the original was the Darwinian nature of the game. You spend a few days building up a character only to have him die by friendly fire. By the end of the game, you really felt like you had a battle-hardened crew.

It's basically an updated Thief: The Dark Project with some magic abilities thrown in and the ability to go full bore slaughter mode and not get smeared by the guards, if you prefer it more actiony and less sneaky.

Loving it so far.

Hate the voice overs of the squaddies. Hate, hate, hate.

Rockstone: I have no idea what this game really is. Can someone sell it to me?

Aliens are invading the Earth. You head up a counter-alien special forces unit that receives funding from most countries on Earth. You send your squads out to deal with various alien incursions, which is the "meat" of the game...tactical, turn-based, squad vs. aliens. Your soldiers gain experience and can level up. You can have your scientists research dead aliens and recovered alien tech in order to develop improved weapons, equipment, and vehicles. You have a base which, if this is like the original XCOM, you can customize and expand as you gain more funding and research.

The original XCOM was one of the most brutal games of the era in terms of difficulty because you started out at a major tech disadvantage, and the alien incursions happened often enough that you couldn't stop all of them...which means you might end up losing funding from a country if things got too bad for them. Losing one or more soldiers per mission was far from unusual, which lead to some of us more OCD types re-playing missions in order to "get everyone home". :)
