i guess some people never saw the big milk dispensers that use bags of milk in cardboard boxes in cafeteria style eating areas and thought maybe they have it for home use too. i must have filled 10,000 of those dispensers when i was in college and worked in the cafeteria for extra money. 99% of the girls and 50% of the guys were either too weak or just lazy and wouldn't lift the 50 pound box and get it in the machine.

When I lived near Kelowna in B.C. we only got milk in bags, but that was around 15 years ago. I think they were phased out over time. I haven't seen them since.

I'll be honest - I really don't like bagged milk. Too much fussing around, and as somebody who drinks a LOT of milk, I find myself changing the bags on a near-constant basis. I really wish that gallon jugs were more common up here, they're so much more convenient.

I don't get it. What's so great about this? It can't possibly be much cheaper than cartons or jugs, and now you've got a pitcher to wash. WTF?

Never seen bagged milk that size, but when I was in school all our milk came in little single serve bags. You got a straw with a point on it like for a juice box and you just jabbed it into the bag.

It wasn't just a local thing as we had this in middleschool when I lived in Louisiana, as well as high school in New York.

Absolutely you can, you can even leave in in the sun on a hot day, or leave it on the counter top for weeks at a time. However I wouldn`t recommend drinking it, or eating it at that point.

Canadian here, from Ontario.
Look, we can buy milk in bags, cardboard boxes, or plastic containers.
I buy it in bags. One big bag has three smaller bags in it. The big bag is about a gallon.
I guess the selling point is you keep your gallon of milk fresher by keeping it sealed until you need it.
Can we just let this thing go? It's really not that weird, it's just packaging.

30 years ago here in the US we had bag milk. Mostlu cafeterias or restaurants where you put a bag of milk into a crate and loaded the crate into a freezer. The bag had a tube coming out of it which you threaded down and out. there was a heavy handle which squished the tube to let milk come through or to stop it. Just snip the end of the tube and close the door. Want milk just lift the handle and let it drop when you have enough. They were everywhere. Now get off my lawn.

We had bagged milk when I was a kid in Wisconsin. I moved away a long time ago so I don't know if they still do though.

You're talking crazy talk. I lived *in* Kelowna 15 years ago (and most of the decade prior to that), and I never saw milk in a bag until I moved to Ottawa.

Those pitchers and milk bags showed up at the local gas station here in suburban Milwaukee a short while ago. No-one is buying them--the pitchers are collecting dust.

We go through 5 gallons a week, so there's no way in hell I'm giving up gallon jugs and changing bags twice a day.

Teufelaffe: The only advantage I'm seeing here is that the empty bags take up less space in your trash/recycling than plastic jugs or cardboard cartons. Not sure that compensates for the extra work involved and the addition of a pitcher that needs to be cleaned.

If the bags were gallon sized it might be worthwhile. From the comments it doesn't seem like they are available that large.

With recycling milk jugs can't be that bad. Espically since I don't think you can recycle the used bags.

From Calgary here and they don't sell bagged milk anywhere I've seen. However, my grandparents always have it in Edmonton so I'm going to suggest that its very very very localized even still.
