(Yahoo)   Security guy at Libyan consulate cabled State Department twice asking for security help, but got no response because no one knows what the hell a "cable" is any more. Well, not quite, but the real reason was just as dumb   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 197

Buck, that was uncalled for. He is Tom Clancy. Saying he reads his own books and then masturbates is just...well quite frankly it's disturbing.

Nadie_AZ: All the GOP hears is 'Obama failed'. That's it. Now, if McCain had been in office, it would be a cacophonous defense of the President and how we need to stay the course and how Congress wasn't giving him the tools or the money to do what he needs to do- they would need to spend MORE money.

I want the election to end.

I really really REALLY would love single digit campaign seasons. I get how the majority can gain advantage when they can call the election date but STILL this sucks.

US - and my state - Reps are basically in 24/7 campaign mode more than 50% of their time in office. It sucks. Not as much as the '10 gerrymandering but pretty close. If you don't have a war chest you lose. So amass it as early as possible.

I get it. It still SUCKS.

intelligent comment below: Brubold: Yeah it's totally the GOP's fault. This makes sense as the White House immediately went into attack mode over it instead of trying to cover up the story like they had made a huge mis....oh nm.

So you're saying they should have gone straight to blaming the Republicans for cutting the security budget? Is that your final answer?

I'd love to see them try that argument. They didn't because they know there's no substance to the argument. As has been pointed out, the budget for 2012 was much higher. It's not the Republicans' fault that the State Dept decided to spend the money elsewhere.

So instead of trying that the Obama administration kept trying to mislead us about what happened. Now it's all crashing down around Barry O's head and it didn't wait until after the election to happen like I'm sure he was hoping it would.

Anyone that thinks "clever" ads about Big Bird are going to save him in this election better wake up quick.

No no no, I'm not saying anything is wrong with that at all. Hell, invite your friends, have a ball.

It's Tom Clancy alone that is disturbing. He's the literary equivalent of Thomas Kinkade. Friends don't let friends read Tom Clancy.

This is the difference today between the two parties.

One side knows not trot out some lame BS argument with no facts to support it.

The other side doubles down on that baseless argument and presents it as alternate reality fact to the rational world.

"much higher" but enough to cover added security? You trolls seem to be making A LOT of unsubstantiated claims. Shocking I know

What crashed down? Nothing did, because he could do nothing. It's not like there was a memo from CIA saying "imminent attack on embassy in Syria" now THAT would be embarrassing

I sure hope the media would show outrage over that, did they? I forget it was so long ago

So then it's even MORE embarrassing for Republicans to have demanded less funding for the state department, right?

I guess you missed this news.

Are you this dumb on purpose or are you incapable of admitting your side is wrong because you still want that paycheck?

I agree. I am so sick of the GOP and Mitt-farking-Romney constantly lying his sorry ass off over every issue. Then I hear a massive outpouring of derp from the morons on the right about something stupid. They refuse to debate with reason, they refuse to listen to facts, they rely on the echo chamber.

I was ready for it to end months ago.

You're lucky.

No, this is a State Department that is incompetently managed.

The idea that a U.S. ambassador in one of the most dangerous cities in the world could be left with so little protection is ridiculous.

Somebody should lose their job and Clinton should appear before Congress to explain the poor security.

As if that wasn't enough, you go on to rant and turn that incident into a political football:

GAT_00: Also there was no money in the budget because once the GOP took over the House they massively cut the budget for protection of embassies.

If they didn't have the resources to defend the place why did they keep it open? When bureaucrats get caught screwing up one of their first excuses is "lack of funding"

FTA"We have 15,000 (security contractors) in Iraq, and we have a hard time having more than two dozen in Libya," Chaffetz said. "It doesn't seem to balance itself out right."

Would it hurt much to have shifted a mere 100 from Iraq to Libya or request a Marine FAST unit?

FTACharlene Lamb, wanted to keep the number of U.S. security personnel in Benghazi "artificially low," according to a memo

This explans it all. Some State Department bureaucrats feel a large security presence sends a message contrary to the one they want- that things are stable or not very dangerous. It is why the Army did not have the armor it wanted in Mogadishu, the ROE in Beruit was so restrictive before the bombing and why the State Deparment got so upset when Marines landed in Da Nang back in 1965 with tanks The State Department did not know that tanks are normally part of a Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Marines saw no reason to leave them behind)

There are only seven"hot zone" embassies in the entire world, and they should have adequate protection regardless of request:

Libya, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan

There is truly no excuse for this.

While not an excuse, this scenario is awfully common in the spook community.
Since I have sat in on the planning phase of much similar operations, I find it difficult to say:

It is pretty stupid to rotate personnel out when the opposition watches carefully
If you do, you can provoke an attack on a good day
This is sometimes the plan

Seriously. If you have a source that says that the Obama Admin didn't hire a British security firm because they agreed to the Admin's "weapon-free" policy, I'd love to see it more than you know. So far, every last thing I've read indicates that it's YOU whose lying. Sure, no Marines were killed. I never said any were. But somebody died, and it wasn't the terrorists. Once again, the disarmed become the pre-arranged victims.

Dear Dumbass,

The Second Amendment does not apply to US citizens in foreign countries. The DSS is armed - locked and loaded, even, as they are accredited diplomats. The local guards are armed - weapons and ammunition-, as they are locally accredited. If they are present, the Marines are armed - locked and loaded. US contractor personnel do not have immunity and must comply with the laws of the country to which they are assigned. If the law allows it and their positions require it, they, too, are armed.

Regards,

Aaaand farkied.

Three of the four links go to articles, two of which addressed how the Libyans themselves (civilians, mind you) reacted to the attack. HINT: They shut down all the islamist militias in the area using whatever force they deemed necessary.
I put in one link to pictures showing protesters carrying misspelt signs, believing that familiarity with that particular format would help you would comprehend more easily.
