As a regular commuter on NJ Transit into Penn Station, I hate Amtrak with the passion of a thousand blazing suns.

I happened to be going to Jersey on that day last week when the whole Northeast Corridor went down. Took 2+ hours to get from Penn to Newark on a train so crowded that even the aisles were full, and I would have had to go beyond Newark if I wasn't able to call in a ride. Worst train experience ever, and that's saying something.

But I still think Amtrak is the way to go to Baltimore or DC if you're not driving.

It's a 2 hour train that probably puts a lot of them an awful lot closer to home then JFK or LGA. I wonder if they just buy the whole train.

I ride the Marc Penn line everyday - they use Amtrak's lines. The fact that this DIDN'T fark up my commute this morning makes me the happiest man in the world.

Amtrak is a crap shoot. Early in the day you should be fine. By the evening commute, the system is a disaster with compounded delays throughout. And the people that work there are completely numb to it.

In my life, I fully expect to see the Yankees sell a shirt with Ted Dibiase's face on it. And it will be the most awesomest thing that ever existed in the entire history of stuff

There are contingency plans in Girardi's binder even for "canceled Amtrak runs". You can ask Boone Logan, who had to go outside in street clothes and throw warm up tosses.

During the dark days of 2009, I took a job in Camden, NJ. I live in New York. 2 hours by NJT to Trenton, then another hour-plus by light rail the rest of the way -- that's when the trains worked. Sometimes, the train would just get to EWR and just slow to a crawl. Then I'm looking forward to eating fast food at Penn Station and getting home at 10.

That said, I went down to Baltimore for a weekend on the Amtrak, and the ride was fairly quick and pleasant. $200 round-trip though, so not a trip one could make often on a middle-class income.

When I got a job in DC, for the first nine months or so I drove weekly from Philly. Then I took Megabus for a year and a half. Now I've upgraded to Amtrak. For a former employer, I spent a year commuting via the Delta Shuttle between DC and La Guardia. In my experience, Amtrak is the best, most reliable option for regular inter-city commuting on the East Coast. Not saying that it is perfect, but it beats all other options.

/Still get nauseated whenever I see a Megabus. Blagh.
//Train departure from Philly to DC was only delayed one hour this morning, but the train stopped at every station between Philly and DC, so the ride took longer than normal. Didn't see any Yankees hanging out on the platfrom on our way through Charm City.

Oh, I've been waiting them for them to use the image I always use in Yankees threads that inevitably wind up as payroll biatching -

Until then, I'll just wait for them to fully rip off those old Legacy shirts WWE used to sell.

But with pinstripes or something on it, y'know. Mwahahaha.

FARK the Yankees!

And the NY media will probably blame A-Rod for this.

Considering what they are attempting to do (get a couple dozen athletes from Baltimore to New York in a reasonably short timeframe, for less than a private charter plane) the train is the best option. Not like the hours lost waiting on a flight, gives you much more room and you can get up and move around, so it's more comfortable than plane or bus, and its cheap. Unless you are doing a private charter flight it's the best option. I'm sure they had fall-back plans for the train being unavailable though - probably involved a bus of some kind.
