Heineken isn't very good, but I'll drink it if someone hands one to me. There's no way I'd spend money on it though; at least not in the price bracket it's usually placed in (ditto with Stella, Carlsberg and similar imports). I'll always take a genuine German/Czech pilsener over those, though. No, Beck's doesn't count as genuine.

I agree that getting rid of the green bottle is the first thing they could do to improve it, but I'm sure the marketing department beheads anyone who offers up that suggestion. The canned stuff always tastes (comparatively) better, because it isn't skunky as hell.

Done all the craft beers. Most I like to have one and then I'm done.

There are some beers that just always seem to have a skunky bouquet like Molson Golden of Canada or Heineken of the Netherlands. I had just assumed that was how they were meant to be. I would be wrong. Skunkiness in beer is never a desirable feature for any brewer and is caused by light. A beer in a bottle, especially clear or green, is very susceptible to light. In particular, the bitter compounds in hops, isohumulones, break down very quickly and react with sulfur compounds in the beer. This produces MBT (3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol), which not only smells like skunk, but is chemically very similar to a skunk's spray. It only takes a matter of hours of light for a beer to go skunky.

Cans and kegs offer the best protection for beers, but to be perfectly honest, I think a canned beer tastes like aluminum. Brown bottles also protect beer fairly well. But clear or green glass leaves the beer practically defenseless. Pilsners in green glass bottles notoriously go skunky. It's best to keep beer in a dark refrigerator.

Also, with Rolling Rock at least you again have the difference in transit. I don't care how quick Heineken says they get their beer to the US, it still has to sit in a couple of warehouses and come across in a container on a cargo ship.

I think many of the flaws people may perceive as "skunky" have a lot to do with age and freshness.

I saw these the other day! Needless to say I bought one just to make sure it still tasted as delicious. It did.

Who cares? Heineken was dead to me the day they stopped selling their swill in cans that I could make stoves out of.

wow, I have a CSB related to Heineken...

I was just outside of Amsterdam drinking with some locals I met (happened to be members of the women's National Field hockey team from the Netherlands -all incredibly hot, and really that story is more interesting than this part, but sigh...)

So, (skipping past some of the good parts), they asked what kind of beer I had been drinking since I had gotten there. I mostly drink gin and tonic and said such, but asked what they'd suggest... They said, "have you tried Heineken?"

I said yes... and I wasn't really a fan of it... Then all of the girls started laughing and said it was crap beer and they were just testing me.

Turns out the locals think that Heineken is crap beer like we think Budweiser is crap beer. They said it's mostly the underclass that drinks Heineken over there.

A couple local breweries here in Austin have gone canned. They are lined these days, and taste quite clean. I'm a big fan.

They can do whatever they want with the bottles. Heineken is the only beer I prefer in a can.

I've never had a skunk canned Heineken.

Why not a plastic sack inside a cardboard box? It worked for wine.

I've never tasted another beer with the distinctly nasty taste of Heineken. They've taken 'unique' and managed to bottle it.

I've had beers that weren't good, or could be better, or bland, or tasteless, but Heineken... that trademark Heineken stank is all together theirs.

In St Lucia there'a a weekly street party in Gros Islet, DJ's, dancing, three card monte that sort of thing. Got there sort of loaded, had a nice time, ate some local fried fish. Quite a few little kids hustling beer from 5 gal buckets of ice and Heineken. Bought a few bottles for myself and friends. Kid put them on the picnic table, made change and took off. Everyone made a grab and I grabbed the last one. Thought I was hallucinating as my hand wrapped completely around the bottle because you know, there's only one sized Heineken bottle.
Cognitive Dissonance reigned supreme for a few minutes.
Was just as cold and tasted just as good - well as good as any Heineken can

Anyone who knows a flavor profile knows that shiate green beer is skunky.

Yeah, no. There are good beers that have elements of the flavor you label as being "skunky", and there are bad ones.

I drink and enjoy many, many types of beer, including quite a few of the best-rated brews on BeerAdvocate. I am also not a beer snob, and recognize not everybody wants to exist solely on microbrews and beers for which you have to hunt for weeks to track down a bottle. For a mass-market beverage, Heineken is a perfectly drinkable brew. Pull your head out of your own ass and you, too, might recognize that. The only people who whine about Heineken are beer snobs who whine about practically all mass-market beer, or people who can't stomach anything except watery, almost tasteless brews like Budweiser.

LOL.

To be fair, you don't have to be a beer snob to dislike Budweiser. It is barely beer--like I say, there's little to no actual flavor in it, it's just bubbly, mildly alcoholic water.

I am, however, aware that there's a perceived contradiction there, but if you knew me, you'd know I'm not afraid to try most any beer, and like a whole lot of them including a number of mass-market ones.

Unlike certain other people in here who like to tout their "training"--I'd be willing to bet they don't have a single globally, regionally, or even locally-recognized brew to their names, and have merely dabbled with home brewing--I am not a snob.

There's a soft spot in my cold, black heart for Heineken, because it was my first beer. We swiped some from a parent at the tender age of ..... maybe 14 and had us a time.

Tasted like shiat.

But I had been told that beer was an acquired taste, so I persevered. Thankfully, I've been lucky enough to live in places like Fort Collins, CO and San Diego, CA. No need to drink Heineken when you've got awesome microbrews on hand.
