It was a Harley, wasn't it?

I'll bet it was a Harley.

Yeah, because I can tell what make a bike is from the shape of the burned out shell. Not all of us are Mike Wolfe.

JackieRabbit: Pray 4 Mojo: A Harley is no more a POS than any Jap V-Twin.

I can't agree or disagree, since I don't ride.

I do, and I'll agree with the other guy. All other things being equal, Jap cruisers are going to rattle loose just like Harleys will.

However, all things aren't equal.

2013 Electra glide starts at about $20K
2013 Vulcan 900 starts at about $10K

That being said, everyone here is too young to ride slow motorcycles.

Pray 4 Mojo: JackieRabbit: Mishno: Harleys are both pretty reliable, it's just that you pay a brand premium of 25-50% over what the same quality will cost you from Honda or Kawasaki.

I have a friend who is a Harley mechanic and customizer. He disagrees with you. He says Harleys are POSs from a reliability standpoint. He owns one and is constantly working on it. He likes them to ride, though, and there is the whole Harley culture. If someone asks him what kind of bike to get, if they don't care about the whole Harley thing, he recommends Honda or BMW.

That's not really true. Have owned lots of Jap bikes and now Harleys. A Harley is no more a POS than any Jap V-Twin. It's a V-Twin... they shake... and stuff comes loose. Just the way it is. That said... you're paying (a lot) for the name. The advantage to paying for that name though... is the extensive amount of aftermarket and dealer support that no other company can come close to matching. Resale value on them is pretty key to.

The AMF days gave Harley a reputation that most still think is true... it's just not. I have an '05 and '07 with a combined 75k miles on them. Neither one has ever been in the shop for anything other than mods, maintenance or tires.

and chicks dig em.

A Japanese V-Twin with a two-throw crank won't shake as much as a Harley with a single-throw crank. From what I've read and heard from Harley folks though, new Harleys aren't particularly unreliable.

Personally, I don't get the "lifestyle" thing and ride a Honda. Isn't it true that Harley makes more money selling t-shirts and "lifestyle gear" than bikes?

Investigators have not determined an exact cause but believe the fuel in the gas tank contributed to the rapid flame spread making the bike a total loss.

C'mon man... that's a fair comparison?

How 'bout this...

2013 Harley Fatboy - $18,000
2013 Yamaha Road Star - $14,000
2013 Honda VTX - $15,000

In 5 years, with 25,000 miles and $1000 in accessories and modifications:

2013 Harley Fatboy - $12,000
2013 Yamaha Road Star - $6,000
2013 Honda VTX 1800 - $7,000

Also... a 2013 Gold Wing is over $20k... While the rest of the wold wasn't looking... metric bikes went and got very expensive.

I took off my helmet and was about to give him the sob story of how I hadn't been home in months and was just in a hurry hey I'm active duty military cut me a break... when his car completely overheated, blew it's radiator and started foaming all over the shoulder.

I told him if he could come up with a helmet I'd give him a ride into town. He laughed, called his buddies, and let me go.

I don't go in for those shenanigans personally... I'll wear Harley crap if it's a gift or I find it at a thrift store... but I ain't paying $40 bucks for a damn t-shirt.

I bought mine because I like them and they suit my needs and my lifestyle. Not gonna go judging anybody for what they choose to spend their own money on...

Full bag V twin with a full fairing. I didn't dig too much beyond that, but I'd be interested in what wasn't fair about the comparison. I don't ride twins either way, so I've got no dog in that particular fight.

In 2011, 76.2% of HD's revenue came from motorcycle sales. 5.9% came from merchandise not parts and accessories related. That's still three hundred million dollars worth of t-shirts, but it's only a fraction of their total revenue stream.

I don't know of a full fairing/full bag 900 Vulcan... and a quick google doesn't sow me any either. If you have a link... I'll take a look.

That said... it's the 900cc thing that's the huge difference. That'd be dangerously underpowered for full luggage, two up touring.

A fair comparison would be the Vulcan Vaquero... which is about $18,000.

The EG, to correct you, would be about $23,000... I think.

Yeah. I've hauled my oldest daughter all over the west coast on that thing. Colorado, Montana, Utah... That pic is just north of the Avenue of the Giants in nor-cal. When it gets up over 90MPH, it magically turns from a 700lb top heavy full bager into this really nimble cruise missile. I waver back and forth between replacing it with a new C-14 SuperConk, or now that the oldest is in college, a dual sport. Or maybe I just keep it.

According to HD it is. In 2011, 5.9% of product revenue was based on "general merchandise" and totaled $271 million.

If you don't think that's accurate, you should report it to the SEC, because that is what HD told them.

Given the new super scooter trend I've been seeing all over as of late (BMW has an 800cc scooter coming out) I'm kind of surprised that Honda hasn't brought out the Pacific Coast again. The styling is similar enough but it could be a "grown up's" scooter of sorts. I always thought it would be cool to fit an ice chest or bbq grill back in that trunk.

The red parts are - the white and green are custom. The previous owner had it painted, and whoever shot the paint did a beautiful job - lots of extra clear coat and wet-sanding. The color transitions and the airbrushed "Ducati" logo are completely buried in the clear - you can run your finger across them and not feel them.

Oh, don't be officious. You're not yourself when you're officious. But then, that's the curse of a government job.

moike: ScottRiqui: Here's mine - my wife calls it the "pimp parade float". A 944cc twin gets out of its own way just fine, even with two people and luggage.

I used to have one just like that with the exception of the paint...

Quite a fun little commuter... I miss it at times, but I still have (and always will have) my dead-reliable M944.

I didn't know you were a Farker! I can't remember when I first saw your bike (the Ducati.ms forum, perhaps?), but I've always loved it. Glad to hear you still have it. I had a 2000 M900 before the ST2, but I wadded it against a guardrail, almost losing a leg in the process.

Pray 4 Mojo: Rent Party: Of course you do. I showed you mine! We have failed if we don't turn this into bike porn thread in any case.

Not as pretty a location... but it is a pretty nice parking lot.
