They left out the most important information from that 'story': what type of motorcycle?

It was a Harley, wasn't it?

I'll bet it was a Harley.

Investigators have not determined an exact cause but believe the fuel in the gas tank contributed to the rapid flame spread

Must be some of those investigators you see you can get training for on those packs of matches they give people who are too poor to buy lighters with their basic cigarettes.

Those were the only items he was able to recover as the fire grew rapidly.

As much as cops let their cars sit and idle for hours on end, I'm not surprised they don't catch on fire more. If I wanted to figure out how the motorcycle got burned up, I'd start by looking at the maintenance records.

Lake Oswego's is Portland's richest suburb, and they have zero crime. The LO cops have been buying shiat they don't need for years, so I'm sure this will be an excuse for them to replace their entire fleet of motorcycles.

BMW, Harley, Ducati.

Whatever. You want a bike that will last a while, get a Honda or a Kawasaki.

My local City PD just switched from Harleys to Beemers last year. The main reason was because two of the Harley's had caught on fire...

BMWs and Harleys are both pretty reliable, it's just that you pay a brand premium of 25-50% over what the same quality will cost you from Honda or Kawasaki. I don't know how reliable Ducs are, but a valve inspection/adjustment will cost you about what a year of mantainance, insurance and gas costs you on a Honda.

I have a friend who is a Harley mechanic and customizer. He disagrees with you. He says Harleys are POSs from a reliability standpoint. He owns one and is constantly working on it. He likes them to ride, though, and there is the whole Harley culture. If someone asks him what kind of bike to get, if they don't care about the whole Harley thing, he recommends Honda or BMW.

I got pulled over in Bend, Oregon while riding my motorcycle too fast for the local po-po. I took off my helmet and was about to give him the sob story of how I hadn't been home in months and was just in a hurry hey I'm active duty military cut me a break... when his car completely overheated, blew it's radiator and started foaming all over the shoulder.

I told him if he could come up with a helmet I'd give him a ride into town. He laughed, called his buddies, and let me go.

/ Cool cop in Oregon. Who knew?!

I can't tell from the burned out frame, so I took a gander at the Oswego Lake
Police dept's website, and zoomed in as far as I could...and I swear the badge
on it is that of a Honda. Specifically this one:

http://powersports.honda.com/2012/st1300/pa.aspx

Their website claims that they have 2 motorcycle officers, and the double-photo
(both bikes) look similar enough, I'm just gonna have to assume that Oswego
Lake doesn't maintain a very large fleet of police bikes.

I love my Kawasaki Vulcan, but I have to admit that when I rode a friend's Harley, it was a nice smooth ride.

No, I don't need a beer, and neither do you.
Sir, could you please tell your friends to get out of the boat?

That's not really true. Have owned lots of Jap bikes and now Harleys. A Harley is no more a POS than any Jap V-Twin. It's a V-Twin... they shake... and stuff comes loose. Just the way it is. That said... you're paying (a lot) for the name. The advantage to paying for that name though... is the extensive amount of aftermarket and dealer support that no other company can come close to matching. Resale value on them is pretty key to.

The AMF days gave Harley a reputation that most still think is true... it's just not. I have an '05 and '07 with a combined 75k miles on them. Neither one has ever been in the shop for anything other than mods, maintenance or tires.

and chicks dig em.

Pray 4 Mojo: A Harley is no more a POS than any Jap V-Twin.

I can't agree or disagree, since I don't ride. I'm just telling you what someone I know to be an expert on motorcycles says. But I know Honda's quality and they are definitely well engineered, high-quality machines, not over-hyped junk. There owners get way more than a name for their investment. I love how quiet they are. If we can agree on anything about a Harley, it is that they are loud. And expensive! But I supposed all the nicer bikes are these days.

bingo! drove that nail in with one smack. damn shame is its more taxpayer money pissed away. the little Piaggio scooters used for hand out parking tickets in NYC cost a fortune equipped for the police. i'd hate to see what a police issued loaded Harely D must cost.
