the jail was examining safe alternatives to dental floss

My dentist suggested a gadget that sprays water jets between your teeth. They gave me one, which I assume had been given to them as a sample by a salesman. I don't know what they cost.

Cheaper to have inmates floss in front of guards.

Water piks are nice, but they are nowhere near as effective at removing biofilms as flossing.

Classy that he is so concerned about dental hygiene.

This is pretty farking funny until you have a relative in prison. Then the loss of human rights and proper basic health care gets real.

Yeah, they are on iTunes now. It may have been added only a few months ago to the catalog, but before that - all you could get was Dweezle's renditions, and collections of unreleased, or live bootlegged sounding stuff... not pleasant. I got Apostrophé, Overnight Sensation, Shiek Yerbooty, and Joe's Garage I, II, & III on a binge of drunken, Zappa-fan excitement when they finally appeared.

...anyway, carry on.

This is Merikee. If you don't want to die a horrible lingering death of an easily preventable condition while being brutally gang-raped anally and pepper sprayed twice daily don't get arrested!

I will lay any odds you like that this inmate did not spend five seconds a week flossing before he was incarcerated.

We need to start finding things for these guys to do, and then making them do it, so they don't have time for this crap.

Probably shouldnt be treating people incarcerated for poisoning themselves this way either.

Floss, besides for the obvious "keeping your mouth pretty" benefit, must have a zillion uses in the joint. You ever tried tying a shiv together with tube sock elastic?

Just because convicts have (usually, perhaps always) committed a crime to end up in prison, does not mean they lose all rights. Having proper dental care is among those rights, and I see no reason with either using an easily broken floss that they can use, or of at least giving them the option to floss in front of a guard who can then ensure that the floss is disposed off and is not used in the making of contraband.

It will cost less in the long run, in terms of dental care bills to the state, and preserves the human rights of prisoners.

Well, why don't you go to the store and buy them all some floss. As far as I'm concerned... they can go without floss. I doubt the majority of inmates have ever used it anyway.

And toilet paper! Toilet paper can be woven into escape ropes and garrotes. Ban toilet paper from prison.
