If you have two drones in the same area and one has fuel and the other doesn't why not just use the one that has the fuel? This makes no sense unless they have plans for a special refueling drone that can hold way more fuel.

Hack Patooey: Next up, reloading themselves. Then, they start getting cranky, and killing everyone, not just the 'bad' guys. I've seen this movie before.

This is the part every bad sci-fi writer farks up. A drone dosen't need to think about why it is a drone, or if its human creators / parents / Gods are worthy of their creation. It needs to be able to find / observe / kill its target. And it dosen't even need to do that, it is simply programmed to do so. It is a drone and it dosen't give a shiat about its place in the universe.

I am not saying that someone, at some point, won't try and create artificial intelligence equal or superior to that of humans. But it won't evolve from someone overengineering a vacuum cleaner.

"Two unmanned drones were able to fly close enough together for an automated refuel to take place" != "Drones can now refuel themselves".

I mean, gratz and all on being able to fly two drones somewhat close to each other, but whoop de farking do.

Since most military aircraft are fly by wire, wouldn't this mean that high altitude automated refueling is now possible for all jets?

/and wouldn't this be relevant technology on the eve of them finally buying replacements for their half century old tanker fleet?

The Predator is designed to remain aloft for 24 hours at a time, and they have a stall speed of 62 mph, so I'm not sure either would actually be that big of a problem.

This. I'm continually frustrated by the notion that artificial intelligence is somehow supposed to spontaneously combust as consciousness. I mean, that's the point of artifiicial intelligence, that it can be intelligent without all that consciousness baggage.

Exactly. The slower an airplane's approach speed the easier it is to land on a carrier, so for a Predator it should be a snap. In fact, I'd be surprised if it hasn't already been done. That said I have former C-5 squadron mates who fly drones for the AF, who tell me that the birds come and go with one enroute stop between CONUS and SWATO. Being able to eliminate that stop by using IFR would be a huge plus.

way south: Since most military aircraft are fly by wire, wouldn't this mean that high altitude automated refueling is now possible for all jets?

It's already happened with probe/drogue.

way south: /and wouldn't this be relevant technology on the eve of them finally buying replacements for their half century old tanker fleet?

Yes and no. The replacements address the airframes' age, the capacity to refuel by wire is a completely separate issue (but is still relevant).

Remember, all the drones are to be built in metric or hex-cap, but the bolts on the maintenance bots are to be imperial or Torx. Maintenance bots are not to be equipped in imperial or Torx.
