Atheism is he fastest-growing religion? I don't believe it.

/And neither do they.

Religious people can be wonderful people but, we all know that not all are. More people have been killed in the name of a deity than for any other reason in history.

First, I'm agnostic. God can't be proved or disproved.

I'm pretty sure atheism in the guise of Communism killed way more people. Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot, killed way more people than religion. I read it some where.

Prove me wrong children.

vpb: Pocket Ninja: Actually, they said that the fastest growing group is the religiously "unaffiliated," over half of whom still attend church and/or consider themselves "spiritual" and would certainly not label themselves as atheists. Although since there is no group easier to troll than online atheists, your headline will work just fine, subby.

I don't know. Many people who attend church only go to keep their friends and family happy.

Or to make and maintain business contacts.

You're a troll but Stalin, Lenin, and Pol Pot created state religions filled with all the same stifling of dissent, adherence to dogma, ritual, evangelism, and public displays of devotion. The problem with Stalin, Lenin, and Pol Pot wasn't too much rationality. It was more religion.

Yep, and that idiot lays Stalin, Lenin, and Pol Pot on atheism like it had anything to do with their atrocities or their maintenance of power.

They all had brown hair too.

For the sake of all that you hold sacred, will everyone stop the insipid comments about who killed who in the name of what? Everyone here knows that killing people is wrong. It doesn't matter if you do it in the name of God, Communism, atheism, Buddha or Jack Russel Terriers, it's wrong. Nobody here supports it.

So everyone on my side of the fence: Stop comparing religious folks to abortion clinic bombers and crusaders - they agree with us that these things are wrong.
And religious folks: Cut out the Hitler and Stalin and whoever else stuff - we agree that those guys were monsters.

If you want to talk about religion, talk. Explain what you believe or don't believe. Keep your mind open to new things, if only to the extent of admitting that you may not already know what someone else thinks. But don't be dicks.

IAMTHEINTARWEBS: So not believing in unicorns is a belief system? yes, for example "I do not believe unicorns exist" = "I believe unicorns do not exist". in both cases believe is the verb

Unfortunately you are incorrect. "I do not believe in X" is not the same as "I believe X doesn't exist". Not believing can mean that you are sure that X isn't the case, but it also could mean that you lack enough evidence to believe something. It doesn't have to mean you actively believe X to be false. For example, I don't believe that any of the planets we've discovered so far have life on them. It doesn't mean that I believe there is no life on the planets.

there are those who attend services to keep friends & family happy. there are those who attend only for their own purposes, as in to promote themselves and their business to others. and there are a few who show up regularly that are there to give praise & worship to God as they have their weary vessel refilled and renewed.

Slaves2Darkness: Buttknuckle: I have come to realize something in the past couple years...

Atheists who look down upon others for their religious beliefs are arrogant. You cannot win an argument with an Atheist, because it is about logic. Religion is about BELIEF. There is so much we don't know out there and to assume that we as humans are "it" is arrogant as hell, IMHO. But it really bothers me when Atheists look down on those who get happiness and serenity in their lives with religion. Of course, this is contingent on the fact that they are not religious nutjobs trying to convert everyone in their path.

Well at least you found a group to feel superior to. You really need to talk to someone about that inferiority complex though.

No, atheists who look down on others for their beliefs are hypocrits.

Agnosticism is about logic. It is impossible with current knowledge and measuring systems to prove if there is or is not a diety. That is scientifically sound reasoning.

Atheists BELIEVE that there is no diety and that is just as unsound a scientific position as is belief in a diety.

Atheism is a belief system and therefore a religion.

THIS. You said it better than me.

Actually, what's "arrogant as hell" is assuming that there's a magical sky fairy who created you, gave you dominion over the earth, and gives a fark about you.

The reality is, humans are not "it". There's a whole universe out there, and humans are but a tiny part of it. You aren't amazing or special or chosen. In the big picture, you are nothing. So, enjoy life while you've got it - nothing but the void awaits.

In the 20th centurary. The 2 biggest killers of war aggression were theists and their religious populace; Hitler (Germany) and Hirohito (Japan). Not atheists. They were the 2 countries that invaded other countries and committed mass genocide (see: holocaust and asian holocaust). So while the atheists were piss poor internal managers, the real people to fear from an external perspective are the theists.

That means, if you are a theist you are a genocidal maniac....mainly Christians. Just saying.

Tolerance? From religious people?!? Have you taken a look at the world around you?

If religious tards would just STFU and believe in their horseshiat quietly, I'd have no problem with them. The fact is, religious tards aren't happy with keeping THEIR RELIGION our of MY LIFE. Whether it's knocking on my door, trying to convert me, or attempting to codify their religious beliefs into secular law, they are, at best, invasive and annoying, and at worst, downright repressive.

Keep your irrational and unsubstantiated nonsense to yourselves, fundie assholes!

That's what we want. And yet, atheists are frequently assumed to be christian (at least I am) and then declared intolerant or childishly rebellious or any number of other things when we point out that we aren't or say we don't really care to be included in a group that is declared to be Christians. We are told that we have to follow the dictates of other's religions, then called arrogant sinners when we say that those are not our rules. If the religious stopped trying to force their religion on us, a lot of us would be more quiet.

Some do seem to think that nobody should be religious, but a lot more of us just think that some random senator's religious prohibitions shouldn't be inflicted on the country.
