All worked at nightclubs in the southwest Houston neighborhood Joseph patrolled, and all live in the U.S. illegally, making them part of what the prosecution called "the perfect pool of victims."

Maybe this whole sanctuary city idea isn't such a bright one after all, since it creates legal categories between the cracks.

I thought the point of sanctuary cities was that people could have access to the police and courts without fear of being deported?

The defense attorney has to throw it out there even if there isn't a snowballs chance in hell it will fly. That is their job.

In theory, as politicians explain it.

In actuality, it creates a group of citizens who can't be deported, but also cannot full claim citizenship rights and are frequently evasive of law enforcement as a result.

This allows them to "fall between the cracks" and, if the article is right that it made a perfect victim pool, is responsible for that.

Less that, and more working on a way to get people in here legally to work so they've got some sort of protection from predators

mind you this creep would have just chosen different women

Defense attorney Nicole DeBorde, who had asked the jury to consider community supervision, said she was disappointed with the decision.

Community supervision = straight probation, no prison? Juries sentence more harshly than judges*, and probably especially when they've just convicted a police officer of using his position to commit rape.

* There is evidence for this. Search the Sentencing Law and Policy blog for past discussions.

There's a simple explanation: look at the photo.

Yep, that's why they only got around to busting him after the fourth woman came forward. They were just watching and waiting for the brown person to screw up.

Your ignorance is alarming. If you bothered with a simple web search, you'd see that Houston is 25.6% white. I doubt that's a racist empire, or at least not one that's racist against non-whites.

But go ahead, don't let facts interrupt your stereotypes.
