North Korea says it has missiles that can hit the US mainland

Maybe if they put the missiles on a ship, sail them to America and throw them at the shore.

Does North Korea not test out their missile naming with English speak focus groups?

I initially misread the headline as referring to the "Red Dwarf" reboot, though that series has simply been continued rather than rebooted.

So...NK according to that graph could nuke Alaska and...its supposed allies...okay then.

That being said....did any of you pick up on the news that a NK soldier killed his squad and platoon leader and took off and defected across the DMZ this weekend??

We know the Airborne Laser worked and has (I think) about a 200 mi range. If it fits on a Boing 747 it would certainly fit in the submarine or destroyer. Seems to make a lot of sense to me that we put a couple of these on a ship a hundred miles or so offshore and continue to assist NK in having their missile tests fail at a 100% rate.

That was pretty wild. That guy will be a marked man for life; the SKoreans better put him in whatever their equivalent is of the witness protection program.

I'd be afraid, aside from the minor fact that turning South Korea into an island is already within the scope of our missiles.

Well recent equipment tests have revised those figures to "about 100yards down range of the launching pad"

a.) Yeah, doubt they can reach.

b.) Yeah, even if they could reach we'd probably knock them out.

c.) Even if one of them DID land the response would be devastating to them. Sort of like saying "Hey, look! I can totally poke this pitbull in the eye with this stick!"

Step 3: load misslies onto truck

North Korea needs its entire army to control its own population. It seems to pose a logistical challenge to suggest that they could occupy a country more than ten times more populous, even if they were allowed to take over unopposed.

This is why I don't believe North Koreans are as thoroughly indoctrinated as we think they are. Most of them know that life is better on the outside, though they probably don't know how much better.

I may be dreaming, but I suspect that every day we draw closer to a Pyongyang Spring

A couple years ago there was a documentary about the thriving black market between China and N. Korea for food and consumer goods, although it seems like it was the elite buying most of it.

Am I the only one who quietly wishes that:

1. Best Korea gets some missiles to "work"
2. They launch at the US
3. Missiles get shot down by badass missile defenses
4. The president gets on TV and rather than being all like "ERHMAHGERD WAR", does this?

"North Koreans for decades have used various means to cross to the South, and the number of defectors is now estimated to be about 25,000. It is rare for a soldier to cross in the DMZ; the last known case was in March 2010."

Seems like nothing new, but I hope you're right.

Was there during a deployment at Osan and took the bus to do the "Tourist" visit there. I remember vividly the waiver you have to sign. That was a high pucker area!

Even if, by the grace of Kim Il-Sung, they manage to hit the US mainland with a missile, that's still a far cry from Red Dawn, which is a full-on invasion.

2012-10-09 01:42:07 PM
And not a single fark was given by me.

They're not going to attack us. 1) their missiles can't hit anywhere but Alaska; 2) their nuclear program is a joke; 3) they are not actually crazy. They know that any attack would result in their utter destruction in response; 4) you can't blackmail money out of people if you actually do what you're threatening.

It may help to know that South Korea's Military budget is about three times that of it's Northern neighbor.

This is just Kim Il Jr.'s way of assuring us he's still relevant*.

*he's not... not really. Hell, he isn't even terribly relevant as a subject of ridicule- he's going to have to get a LOT more eccentric before he can even manage that.

I'm more concerned about some scenario where the NK generals lose control or launch an accidental attack. For example, there is some speculation that the sinking of the SK patrol boat was actually done by a faction that was angry over SK encroachment on special crab fishing rights granted to some of the generals..
