Now, I never met the man, but my dad did. My family moved to Marlette, Michigan in 1970 when my dad took over as manager for the Boise Cascade travel trailer/camper plant there. Marlette was a very small town back then, just one traffic light, but it had a nice country club/golf course north of town and was 60 miles north of Detroit. So, a lot of the Detroit Lions used to come up there and Karras was one of them. He had a thing going on with one of the waitresses at the country club.

Dad liked him, but also liked to prank him. Right about this time was when super glue first came out and Dad talked the bartender at the country club into slipping an old, slightly warped pass thru back into the bar and then super glued a shot glass onto it just before Karras came in and arranged for it to be the only seat available when he came in. The bartender poured him a shot and when Karras tried to pick it up, it wouldn't move. He tugged and tugged and swore and nothing. He ended up leaning down and sucking the whiskey out, much to the amusement of all.

Of course, Karras soon learned Dad was responsible for this and challenged him to arm wrestling. Mind you, Karras was in his prime, playing for the Lions and Dad was 45. Dad beat him. It took awhile, but he did it. Pissed off Karras even more, but then he laughed it off.

On January 7, 1963, Karras's ownership in Detroit's Lindell AC Bar became a source of controversy when league officials urged him to sell his financial interests in the place because of reports of gambling and organized crime influence. After first threatening to retire rather than give it up, Karras admitted placing bets on NFL games and was suspended by the league, along with Green Bay Packers' running back Paul Hornung, for one season (1963).

During his exile, Karras returned to pro wrestling, taking on such memorable characters as Dick the Bruiser, but was then reinstated, along with Hornung, on March 16, 1964 by NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. Upon returning to action in 1964, Karras once refused when an official asked him to call the pregame coin toss. "I'm sorry, sir," Karras replied. "I'm not permitted to gamble."
