Technically the decay still happens inside the amber much like any other fossilization. Generally you are just left with a imprint of the bug inside the animal, occasionally small bits of tissue are left. There was a report of DNA extraction from amber back in 1992 but there's been some contest that it was fake.

I was thinking maybe something else squashed the spider and the wasp, which gave the tree sap the time to swallow up the bugs (so to speak).

I think they mean they actively hunt (like wolf spiders). Most (or at least many) spiders don't hunt, they set up traps (their nests) and wait for food to get stuck in them.

Saying spiders are "predatory" is giving them too much credit. These guys just put up webs and sit back thinking "well, hopefully something wanders into this so I can eat, if not, I guess I'm done for". They're essentially 8 legged hippies. Hell, they even weave.

They sit around and wait for free food, but not just any free food. I flung a stink bug into a web on my front porch, and the little bastard just came over and ejected it. So on top of that, they're also pick. Also in their free time, which they have in abundance, they walk across the walls of my house looking creepy as hell. fark spiders.
