AbbeySomeone: She should be forcibly sterilized.

Always wondered if this was just a reflexive, knee-jerk style statement, or are there people that are actually comfy setting this sort of precedent just because an article on some depraved parent upset them on the morning of a day ending in Y.

AbbeySomeone: I notice that in most of the articles like this there is no mention of any baby daddies.

I was just thinking the same thing. Four kids, one in the oven...even if father(s) of the other kids, including the two year old were absent, where was the baby daddy of the one she was pregnant by when this happened. Also, is this really a case where the grandmother, who has apparently already raised one irresponsible sociopath, needs to have custody of the five grandchildren? I'd almost be inclined to say the best way to break the cycle of stupidity here is to send each child to a different foster family. The oldest would likely be maybe 6 or 7? There's still hope that they could all end up decent citizens if action were taken to get them away from the disfunctional gene pool now.

SkunkWerks: FTA: Prosecutors are asking Escalona be incarcerated for 45 years, so she will not cause any more harm to her children, Denmon said.

Children are, after all, quite vulnerable until they're 45 years of age...

...not that I necessarily disagree with the severity of the sentence, just, yanno... reasoning.

How is this poor reasoning? Given her... prolific tendencies, you have to assume that she'll just keep breeding as soon as she's out. Since forced sterilization is sadly not an option, the only real solution is to keep her locked up until she can't have kids anymore. 68 is a bit old, but better safe than sorry.

That said, they really need to look at chemical castration for this sort of thing.

I would gladly end this woman if it was in the the realm of judicial possibility. She glued a child to a wall and beat said child until it urinated itself.

Removing her ability to procreate is just one of the many happy side effects of the death penalty. Someone who would glue a child to the wall and beat it is certainly towards the top of the list next to terrorists, rapists, and people who drive slowly in the left lane.

Women can, and not all that infrequently do still get pregnant and bear children in prisons.

I'm not really for that either, but that's an entirely different and loooooong tangent, I'm sure.

Yet people still b*tch about Planned Parenthood's $47.8 billion government-funded abortionarium. I only hope they build 2 or 3 more.

Like she would get an abortion. No doubt her kids were her welfare check The government subsidizes this type of activity through the welfare system, Plus condoms are still free at many places including planned parenthod and she did nto use them.

One guess who she is voting for.

If a person shows such poor judgement and has 5 kids she is ill equipped to take care of she should not have the ability to have more kids. She obviously can't make good decisions for herself. I feel the same way about males that have kids scattered all over and don't take care of them.

Not sure if trolling, but if you consider reproductive rights to be a good thing, PP is actually helping minority populations, not discriminating against them.

It wasn't clear exactly how long young Jocelyn was glued to the wall before she was brought to the Dallas hospital. Once there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

I just can't even think of anything to say, this is f*cked up.

Phrases like "poor judgement", "ill-equipped", and "good decisions" are all pretty vague and contextual, I still wouldn't hand my government a free ticket to start sterilizing people based on them. Attempts to legislate "good decision-making" in people rarely go all that well in any case.

It sucks that kids sometimes get caught in the middle of what happens (and despite what the papers seem to tell you, it is "sometimes", statistically speaking), I just find this sort of rhetoric gross over-reaction and a loss of overall perspective... possibly sense as well.

Well, the day she beat the kid, she made a post on facebook or some such that included the phrase "why does God put obstacles in my way?"

On the day she was arrested, she was quoted as saying "only God can judge me".

I'd go with Republican too.

NewportBarGuy: Kazan: vast majority of services provided by PP are not abortion

I mean... They are two very simple words. Planned. Parenthood. Planning to be a parent. Who the f*ck can honestly be against that?

Aside from their other medical services... That's why I give them money. It is a rational, sane, and intelligent, actually, for a society to plan for such things. It improves the community as a whole. As it only relates to those that actually need the assistance, most other people make that decision on their own, as a couple, or as adults.

ok I will give you some of that...PP on paper sounds great help the dumb/poor in making parental decisions, but since we have had PP for umpteen years show me stats where there has been a marked improvement in teen pregnancy, out of wedlock children.

Occasional outlier?

You don't catch the news much, do you?

Child abuse is pretty common, and so is overbreeding (Catholics and Mormons).

Sterilize anyone with more than 3 kids, we don't want to overpopulate this country like the 3rd world countries do.

Is every adult the result of their upbringing or does each adult bring something of their own into the final creation?

I know two siblings very different from each other. Raised on the same house, same town, same schools... One is employed, married happily, kids, dogs, bills, middle america, the other lives with parents, has criminal record, unemployed, mildly sociopathic. I often wonder how much the upbringing affects the result and how much of it comes from within.
Some folks ain't wired right from the get go ya know. No matter how well brought up.

Because someone that abuses a toddler into a coma should continue having children. God will give her more to hone her parenting skills on.

I dunno, I think if I were going to glue a kid to a wall I'd go with superglue. It's totally skin safe, docs use it to close wounds all the time. I used some other day when I made a reallly pretty reasonable effort at cutting off the tip of my left thumb with one of my carving knives.

Planned Parenthood's abortion demographics do not reflect poorly on anyone. An abortion is a legal medical procedure and there should be no negative connotations associated with it. Only the arrogant and dimwitted would believe that their personal beliefs should trump the reproductive rights of living, breathing, sentient being and then make a judgement on that person from such a perspective.

The "Planned Parenthood is conducting minority eugenics" claim is an oft used, ridiculous and hilarious argument considering that the majority of GOP anti-abortionists would prefer to see minorities chained, penned or removed from the country entirely.

Also, it's nice to see that the local district attorney has siezed upon this event to stump for votes.

"When these types of crimes occur we have to send a message, not only to the perpetrator, but to the citizens of Dallas County as a whole," District Attorney Craig Watkins told CNN. "If you choose to commit these types of crimes, we will ensure that you receive an adequate punishment."

asshat DA mutherfarker politician sombiatch

Why not send a message to all the frustrated mothers that when they get so distraught that they want to hit their kids, the should call someone who can help. And then provide those services.
I'd rather spend my money on childraising classes and in home visiting social workers who might prevent this type of thing than feeding and healthcare for the imprisoned child beaters.

Yes. Occasional.

soupgoblin: You don't catch the news much, do you?

Actually, I do. Did you know you can't find any news out about this woman unless it's regarding her arrest (which happened nearly a year ago) or her sentencing (which we're just hearing about now).

Two stories about her. Duplicates fill up about the first ten pages of Google results. I can see where it might be easy not only to see her as a monster, but to misconstrue this kind of abuse as "commonplace". And that's just for this case alone. For one thing, if it really were commonplace, you'd figure people could barely manage being shocked any more.

But we can and do. That sells news. Is it any wonder that the media loves to pelt us with stories like this? People have been saying that society's going to hell in a handbasket since we could write (since before we could write, it would seem as well). Strangely we haven't made it there yet. Must be worse than a road trip to Disney from the mid-west by several orders...

Kill her now. She's already caused millions of dollars of damage to society by firing out so many kids who'll need therapy, and probably be criminals. In my universe she would have sterilized the day after getting a neck tattoo.

Incentivized sterilization. 1 case of per, and a pallet of Huggies, only after kid #2, we don't want anyone biatching that we've unduly removed someone's reproductive capabilities.

Or 2 coupons for half off at the nearest IHOP, for a gentleman requesting a vasectomy, with no requirement for children.
