And more awful, and one of the worst bands in history (as far as talent goes)

I prefer "The American Beatles"....Cheap Trick.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: So I'm going to be the only one that says he likes Kiss more than the Beatles?

I'm ok with that

I'm with you.

Kiss may be one of the most fun novelty acts out there and probably one of the most awesome live acts going, but the actual songs are pretty generic. Take away the stagecraft and make-up and they wouldn't have made it.

When I was a child I used to lay in bed and dream that one day I'd be in a Rock and Roll band playing on stage for you people. Hello Richmond Virginia!

He was cremated.

PsyLord: jj325: Gene Simmons is one of the biggest douchebags in rock. Right up there with Mike Love. But I'll give him credit for coming up with a concept for a band where the actual members are irrelevant--it's all about the make up and the show. More like the Monkees on steroids.

Is it all an act? Not sure, but his Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross was pretty revealing.

Whenever I listen to that interview, I get all pissy.

FirstNationalBastard: rhiner: Gene is a bass player, .

ooops.. My bad.. It's better this way actually. Whoever played that guitar solo probably should not be attributed. It really sucked. The stagecraft, however, was spectacular!

Fake Ace... some scab they slapped the make-up on because he works cheap.

I get it now. I saw KISS live 3yrs ago because I had a festival pass so why not. It was fully 1/3 through the show before I realized that he roles of Ace and Peter were played by scabs. I don't follow the band so i didn't know that Ace and Peter were fired again after the reunion tour. I will not pay to see KISS again, but I'd pay to see Ace's band if they play in my town.

Gene, stop. Just. Stop.

I used to be a huge KISS fan, but I can't take Gene's AW'ing and merchandising anymore.

No, they don't compare to the Beatles, but they are one of the most fun bands ever. Their music from '75 to around '78 is still fantastic. And Destroyer is still on my Top 10 Album list of all time.

/KISS Army, Retired
/A lot you here that like to drink vodka and orange juice.

FirstNationalBastard: Ed Grubermann: FirstNationalBastard: gonzoduke: I hope Paul McCartney has an internet fit over this and puts Geno in his place. You are nothing more than an expert at marketing, Mr. Simmons. Nothing more, nothing less.

Uh... McCartney without Lennon isn't much better than Kiss.

Silly Love Songs or Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime, anyone?

"Live and Let Die", "Band on The Run", "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five", "Picasso's Last Words" (Drink to me), "Helen Wheels", "Jet", "Junior's Farm". Any one of those kicks anything by Kiss into the dirt.

All of those songs were from, what, 1970-1975?

After the mid-70s, McCartney's solo work pretty much went to shiat.

Not going to argue with that.

I first learned of Kiss whe I saw them on one of those old concert shows back in the 70s--can't remember which one. I watched it on a broken TV--good picture but no sound. Thought they looked interesting, the next day bought Dressed To Thrill...played it once and threw it in the trash. The End.

Or was it called Dressed To Kill? I can't remember. And I don't even care.

2012-10-08 08:48:27 PM

Marcus Aurelius: Kiss are a bunch of no talent ass clowns that should have gone away in the 80's.

They had a couple of passably good pop songs in the 70s. Nothing like the Beatles though.

The sad thing is that people can't tell the difference between "first" or "notable" and "good". By today's standards (and I mean by musical standards, not what passes as popular music these days), the Beatles is quite primitive. Music has long since moved on. Those who continue to obsess over them are like people who think a model T is a better car than modern vehicles simply because it was the first mass produced/afforedable vehicle. Technology (and music) have moved on.

While I like some of what Kiss has done, they are more like The Beatles on paint thinner.

FirstNationalBastard: gilgigamesh: So the talented half of Kiss is dead?

Ace and Eric Carr?

...Yeah, pretty much.

Somebody should tell Ace Frehley he's dead, because he keeps denying it.

/You're thinking of Paul - Paul is dead! I have a Beatles album cover that proves it...

Very good and valid point. Someone else made a similar comment above, making the distinction between financially successful and musically successful, which is also a valid point to make when discussing the Beatles. Musically they were children. The only one to show any musical maturity at all was George, and even that came quite late.

Kiss has always been immature. Immaturity is what their whole schtick has been based on from the very beginning. And it is schtick...Kiss is 20th century vaudeville. I only wish the giant hook would come out of the wings and give them a good yank.

I didn't realize steroids sucked so much of your talent out of you. The more you know.

I saw Ace play in Foxboro last year with a great back-up band (and The Biters rock!). He's good, very good and surprisingly the best adjusted member of Kiss. Talented and at peace with himself, something I don't see with Gene or Paul (an awful artist).

Gene Simmons sucks shiat. He's like one of those guys who peaked in high school, and constantly wants to talk about the "Good Ol' Days." While all of his peers moved on to bigger and better things, or at least got over high school.

But then the guy in high school became a rock star, married a Playboy model, became spectacularly wealthy, starred in his own television show and now spends his free time doing whatever the hell he wants. I think Gene Simmons is the king of assholes and I'd probably chuckle a little if something really bad happened to him, but it's hard to deny that he's lived (and continues to live) a pretty charmed life.

Kiss will also probably be a band that will live on as a franchise, performing shows and releasing albums long after Gene and Paul are in the grave. They're the musical equivalent of a comic book.

Gene is exactly right. Catchy songwriters who all sang. Heavy on melody. Ad they proved it in 95 with their Unplugged episode, showing that underneath the makeup, pyro and lights, they're just good songs.

2012-10-09 02:38:11 AM
Lennon & McCartney said they wanted to outsell Lieber & Stoller all along. KISS also is obsessed with pushing their product. Both had contrived, packaged acts. These are giant similarities.

First, that album doesn't exist. Second, I hope you bought Dressed to Kill, and it was the printing that was on red vinyl that you threw away.

For anyone who went through the effort to read the article, you would've seen that he said... "Kiss really was designed to be the Beatles on steroids".

And, yes, Gene is a giant douchebag but at least he admits it and doesn't pretend to be anyone he's not, unlike many pretentious frontmen (I'm looking right at you, Bono). I mean, come on, his last solo album was named "Asshole".

Love 'Em or Leave 'Em... few people have ever gone to a KISS concert and not had a good time (although I'm sure there will be many Fark'rs adding ,,, "Oh Yeah? Well I did... so there"

Their last album got good reviews from critics. I didn't think it was great, but it was decent. It's just fashionable to hate on them. Probably because Simmons (and Stanley to a slightly lesser extent) is an infected horse penis.

I don't hate them to be fashionable. I actually don't even hate them anymore now that I understand that they are entertainers and not musicians. When I thought they were musicians I hated them. Now, I get it and they laugh all the way to bank....not with my money though.

For those of you who keep referring to Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer as "scabs," get over yourselves. Tommy Thayer is an accomplished musician, is at LEAST as good as Ace, and in fact helped Ace relearn all of the songs before the first KISS reunion tour. Eric Singer is twice as talented on drums as Peter Criss, and for that matter Eric Carr was ten times more talented on drums than Peter Criss.

As I said upthread, KISS never fancied themselves to be great musicians. All they wanted to be was great entertainment, and that goal was achieved in spades. Gene Simmons, who I used to admire greatly, is a complete self-centered egotistical dick (his biography proved that easily), but his success in creating a brand cannot be denied.

Plus he gets to nail Shannon Tweed every night, which as far as I'm concerned makes him a veritable god.

And if Gene and Paul had given them their own make-up designs, there wouldn't be a problem.

But, they're low paid replacement employees filling in for the real guys... they're scabs.

/It's a bummer Singer has to be Scab Peter Criss. As you said, Singer is a damn good drummer, and was a member of the last real version of the band before it became the neverending Farewell/Oldies tour.
