Halloween is the best holiday of the year. Screw the other ones. I want to see fake disemboweled corpses and body parts strewn on lawns, drunk people in ridiculous costumes that barely conceal deep psychological neuroses, and kids whacked out on high-fructose corn syrup.

Not sure if this is true or not, but I found this while searching for the pic:

"Apparently, purchasing real skeletons is significantly cheaper than creating plastic ones that look real. Poltergeist probably isn't the only film to have used real skeletons for their big scares- it's just one of the only films that's admitted it. Obviously, the skeletons were altered to look more frightening, but those are genuine dead bodies swimming with JoBeth Williams in the mud."

Back when I was DM'ing a certain epic D&D game 40 years ago, the weapon of choice for the party I was hosting was a +55 Sword of Undead Disruption. Pissed me off. I had randomly generated the damned thing as an artifact, and randomely hidden it. It was the result of a totally improbable run of double-20s, as I recall 6 or 7 rolls with D20 dice. The party, unfortunately, found it fairly early, so there were a bunch of 1st and 2nd level characters with, essentially, a portable reusable directional H-bomb.

There are good reasons to establish the existence of high-level NPC thieves in your campaign setting. Had a DM do that to a group I played in (nothing quite that overpowered, but still unbalancing) we pretty much veered off of the arc he'd planned to try and get it back, instead of just letting it go - but it made for a fun mini campaign, and by the time we finally got the damned thing back, we were about the right level to have that kind of power. Think of it as an opportunity.

When they start falling from the SKY, then I'll worry.

2012-10-08 09:46:38 PM
Well, I'm disappointed.

I thought tonight was going to be memory lane night for me. In my hometown, some road work involved slicing a hill that bordered a cemetery in the eighties. A couple of years passed and the area was hit with extraordinarily heavy rain and some flooding. The ground became so saturated a few coffins popped out of that hillside and lid down into the road. They had to rounded up and reburied after the weather eased up. My grandmother drove me and the other kids over, as close as we could safely get, to have a look. The main event was over. We waited for a while, but soon it became apparent we weren't going to see any coffins in motion. And the ones that had already popped out were just laying there. We probably wouldn't have known what they were if we hadn't read about the event before driving over.

So, get back to me when flood waters are pushing real skeletons out of the ground.

I always wondered about that scene in Poltergeist. I mean, bodies in coffins are somehow shooting up through the ground, popping out of the coffins, and then- well, just lying there, because, um, they're dead. Was there any reason for that scene other than Spielburg feeling he needed a rotting corpse in the pic?

This is why you're supposed to dig 'em up, behead 'em, and smash 'em in the face with big rock after the worms have done their work. Disorients the undead so they can't find their way home.

Of course, a brick will do nowadays. But a big rock is traditional.
