I really need to go back. My only visit to Oktoberfest happened back in 1990, and unfortunately, I was only 11 at the time.

CSB:

I remember seeing volunteers (maybe employees) at the train station who were helping the really drunk people get on the right trains....and preventing them from falling onto the tracks. There was an older couple where the husband was sloshed, and his sober wife was very embarrassed.

A few years ago they banned smoking from inside the tents at Oktoberfest. One of the major concerns that arose from this was the smell of vomit. Smoke used to cover that up and was less offensive. They almost considered continuing to allow smoking to occur there. Cooler heads prevailed and sawdust was the answer. You may want to avoid the clumpy sawdust piles in and around Oktoberfest.

Rules for enjoying a visit to Germany and keeping your dignity:

1. when you go out drinking, only go with the Germans.

2. don't try to out-drink the Germans.

If you must get shiatfaced at Octoberfest, go to Scotland.

"The Red Cross had to deal with more than 800 incapacitated binge-drinkers."

Maybe it had more to do with the Red Cross's state of mind.

A German coworker told me at some of the festivals near where he grew up they would take you way up a steep mountain that pretty much guaranteed you would be sober by the time you got back down.

I wouldn't say overpriced, especially considering what a comparable affair in the US might cost. $13 for 1L, while not cheap compared to local places, is dirt cheap compared to the states.

The chickens were well worth whatever price I paid for them, they were delicious.

Its 10 euro (well, 9.10 rounded up to 10 to include a tip). Of course its more expensive than your favorite watering hole, but thats not a fair comparison. Compared to other festivals and considering the power that they command here, its actually reasonably priced in my opinion

When I was stationed there we always magically had field time in October and March. I've heard from people who went that it kind of sucks. It's horribly crowded, you'll have to wait hours just for a beer or the bathroom and you're getting nowhere near those hot German girls.

Doesn't matter, every German town has their own holidays like every other weekend. Who cares about the big Oktoberfest?

This is true. I got to Germany about twice a year and Oktoberfest is VERY crowed. Worth the wait, but damn that wait is long to get into a beer tent.

Other places in Munich (or German for that matter) hold beer tent/oktoberfest-like events almost every weekend somewhere or another. Same outfits, same beer, big tents and cooked half-chickens. Those are what I'd recommend.

I've been twice - yes it's crowded, expensive and full of disgusting Italians from the south country but it's also a hell of a lot of fun. The second time I went it was so crowded we just went to the actual Hofbrau in Munich proper - just as much fun. Met a nice German couple who imported Skoal from America. The wife loved dipping just as much as the husband.

M wife and I went to Germany for our honeymoon (Flitterwochen auf Deutsch. Such a better term for the whole thing, don't you think?).

Anyway, we spent a month driving around Germany and it was quite lovely. I did however get seriously hammered in Heidelberg and got lost. Wife didn't like that a bit.

We were there during Oktoberfest but we didn't go. We knew it would be deathly crowded and we would have to drive far out of Munich to find a hotel. Next time we will try and make it. Just hope I don't get lost again.

I guess I was lucky when I was there with my nephew in 2010. No reservations but we found seats in the third tent we visited. It was around 1 p.m. so maybe we were there before the power drinkers. The Lowenbrau was great and no fights or vomit that I could see. The only real buzzkill was that our table was being served by a dude and not some buxom Brunhilda but after going through three tents we were not going to find a table in a different section.

The "power that they command"? What does that even mean? Its generic boring German beer in a farking Maß in a giant tent full of tourists and drunks and locals speaking silly bayrisch accents. I don't mind the concept of a beer fest and even overpaying for booze at such occasions, they can be fun. I remember several nights at the winefest in hamburg rathaus or various other smaller oktoberfest parties where we got leathered, had tons of fun, could use a bathroom without standing in line, and didn't have to deal with tourists (until we went to the kiez afterwards...).

I understand the tourist value of this thing, and I guess it would be fine once, but it is vastly overrated (much like German beer...)
