(Foobies)   The figures are in - a record number of paralytic drunkards had to be treated by the Red Cross at this year's Oktoberfest in Munich. Well done everyone   (thelocal.de) divider line 94

lilplatinum: Overpriced shiatshow, and the hot girls in Dirndls are outnumbered by the greasy Italian tourists, the pikey British tourists, and the obnoxiously loud American tourists - not to mention fat sweaty Hermans.

I wouldn't say overpriced, especially considering what a comparable affair in the US might cost. $13 for 1L, while not cheap compared to local places, is dirt cheap compared to the states.

The chickens were well worth whatever price I paid for them, they were delicious.

I read the headline as "paralympic" drunkards and pictured a bunch of athletic people in tipped-over wheelchairs.

This is all avoided by 1) avoiding the second weekend of the event, dubbed "Italian weekend" by the locals, and 2) avoiding the Hofbrau tent.

Highlight of my trip was seeing a dude passed out in a tree.

I've been 4 times, first time was the only Italian weekend. Its still vastly overrated, and I also am not a particular fan of Munich.

Well I lived there for 5 years, I could get a liter of beer for much cheaper than the 10+ euros a pop they charge in munich, and not have to stand in line forever to piss afterwards.

What happened to the feared beer shortage we were warned about just a few weeks ago.

2012-10-08 04:25:52 PM
Sheesh! Those pictures of the beer servers kinda makes me re-think if we should have won the war. Where are our spoils? Fark BMW and Braun, I want the chicks.

I was there last year. Apparently we were better partiers than this year's pussies.

(I still have like 4 hours of lost time, no idea how I got back to my hotel...literally no idea.)

Its 10 euro (well, 9.10 rounded up to 10 to include a tip). Of course its more expensive than your favorite watering hole, but thats not a fair comparison. Compared to other festivals and considering the power that they command here, its actually reasonably priced in my opinion

When I was stationed there we always magically had field time in October and March. I've heard from people who went that it kind of sucks. It's horribly crowded, you'll have to wait hours just for a beer or the bathroom and you're getting nowhere near those hot German girls.

Doesn't matter, every German town has their own holidays like every other weekend. Who cares about the big Oktoberfest?

I was there and it was EPIC! Oktoberfest might be the entire worlds most bad ass event. Lots of puke though. Lots of puke.

I liked Oktoberfest, but I'd like to go back to Munich another time of year when it's not so busy. Hot damn, those dirndls were a sight for sore eyes, though.

This is true. I got to Germany about twice a year and Oktoberfest is VERY crowed. Worth the wait, but damn that wait is long to get into a beer tent.

Other places in Munich (or German for that matter) hold beer tent/oktoberfest-like events almost every weekend somewhere or another. Same outfits, same beer, big tents and cooked half-chickens. Those are what I'd recommend.

I made the mistake of clicking on this article right as my boss turned the corner, and since the last thread I had seen was the one right above yours, that giant picture of clevage was what immediately loaded up when he looked my way.

Fortunately, he appreciates that sort of thing.

I went to Oktoberfest, almost fell into a giant meat grinder, found a lost colony of Neanderthals, led them in an attack on the Homo sapiens above-ground, and all I got was this lousy animated series.

2012-10-08 05:19:55 PM
The year I went I remember stepping over bodies as soon as I got off the train. Looked like Jonestown the morning after. Just about any fest is fun no matter the size and no matter what they are celebrating!

I've been twice - yes it's crowded, expensive and full of disgusting Italians from the south country but it's also a hell of a lot of fun. The second time I went it was so crowded we just went to the actual Hofbrau in Munich proper - just as much fun. Met a nice German couple who imported Skoal from America. The wife loved dipping just as much as the husband.

M wife and I went to Germany for our honeymoon (Flitterwochen auf Deutsch. Such a better term for the whole thing, don't you think?).

Anyway, we spent a month driving around Germany and it was quite lovely. I did however get seriously hammered in Heidelberg and got lost. Wife didn't like that a bit.

We were there during Oktoberfest but we didn't go. We knew it would be deathly crowded and we would have to drive far out of Munich to find a hotel. Next time we will try and make it. Just hope I don't get lost again.

This is true. I was in Munich one summer and there just stumbled on one of those. It had an Oompah band, girls in corsets, and big mugs of beer. It was great.

I guess I was lucky when I was there with my nephew in 2010. No reservations but we found seats in the third tent we visited. It was around 1 p.m. so maybe we were there before the power drinkers. The Lowenbrau was great and no fights or vomit that I could see. The only real buzzkill was that our table was being served by a dude and not some buxom Brunhilda but after going through three tents we were not going to find a table in a different section.

The "power that they command"? What does that even mean? Its generic boring German beer in a farking Maß in a giant tent full of tourists and drunks and locals speaking silly bayrisch accents. I don't mind the concept of a beer fest and even overpaying for booze at such occasions, they can be fun. I remember several nights at the winefest in hamburg rathaus or various other smaller oktoberfest parties where we got leathered, had tons of fun, could use a bathroom without standing in line, and didn't have to deal with tourists (until we went to the kiez afterwards...).

I understand the tourist value of this thing, and I guess it would be fine once, but it is vastly overrated (much like German beer...)
