/It's only Thanksgiving in Canada because the glaciers sweep down from the mountains this time of year.

If you willingly take the pike on a holiday weekend, when there's plenty of ways around it, then you deserve to be tolled.

Government workers, of which Massachusetts has pantloads.

The same geniuses who brought you the Mass Turnpike, ironically enough.

May they stew in their own filth while they revel in their own exhaust fumes.

Foliage season is a pretty big thing in New England. And this particular date usually lands right at the peak of the season. It could be "St. Bumfark's"...people just need a long weekend to get out and see it.

Back in the day, the Mass Pike used to waive tolls if and when congestion got utterly intolerable. I remember them doing this on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a handful of other times.

It would appear based on my recent travels, that this has been thrown out the window in favor of 'fark you, pay me'.

If you need to get to Boston or points West, and you connect with the pike, seriously consider the back roads. Out West, Route 2 is a nice way to get to Boston from Western MA, and if you're coming up 84 to hit Boston, take the very first exit before the tolls and hop onto Route 20. Better yet, if it's backed up, Mashpaug Rd (CT) to South Street to 169 North to Rte. 20.

Fark the pike.

I happen to know that my father-in-law just got on the internet a few weeks ago so you can't be him but you do sound like him. Made the mistake of letting him drive from central Connecticut to LL Bean in Freeport Maine. He took back roads the whole way.

Route 20's fairly slow. Route 9 through Worcester is a slog. You could go up to Route 2, I suppose. But that's out of the way for a lot of people.

LOL Hopefully I'm not that old.. yet..

Sighs.

And yeah, common sense applies - I should have added 'use the backroads to cut past the Pike Suck' not 'Ennh! It's time for a jaunt! Now where were those single-lane roads'

They do. It never ceases to amaze me how few people in Massachusetts use it though. The "cash" lines are always way backed up.

people are paranoid about it. i have a friend, who is otherwise an intelligent and educated guy, who refuses to get it because he expects they use it to track and ticket him if he speeds. i commute on the pike daily, so i use it and its the best thing ever

joness0154: Do they not have an EZ-Pass or I-Pass type system on the turnpike?

They do. It used to be called "Fastlane" and while it would take EZ-Pass, the policy and prices sucked enough that when I was in NY visiting family I got an EZ-Pass from NY and have used it ever since. They've recently announced that Fastlane is going away and being renamed EZ-Pass, but I don't know any of the technical or political details behind it.

/BTW, if you live in southern NY or CT, just stay home and whatever you do, don't take 84.
//and fer chrissake, stay in the f'in right lane if you're going at or below the speed limit

Only for you flappy heads up north. USA doesn't get thanksgiving for six weeks. BOSTON happens to be in the USA.

What's the correlation between Canadians having a holiday and us having a traffic jam?

Some of this problem could alleviated if Massachusetts would go to open road tolling at some of the major choke points (Sturbridge, Weston, Allston-Brighton). That would actually make EZ-Pass effective, because right now there's just too few lanes at the toll plazas to handle the volume.

Agreed. I drive the Mass Pike a few times a month for work (delivering HVAC parts) and know how crazy things can get! It's right up there with 128 & the Xpressway during rush hour!

I guess these are folks that don't use the toll road most of the year, so they don't need an EZ Pass thingy.

The immigrants are migrating. Canadians have to go back to their homeland for thanksgiving.

The xmas decorations are in full bloom at my local Lowes, all nestled up to the animated Halloween skeletons. No shiat. Saw the full displays this morning. Bah, humbug.

To all you people who think the EZ-Pass is going to save you on the pike during these clusterfarks, you're wrong. The traffic jam will occur before EVERY toll entering the pike, and cash or pass you are CRAWLING through the tolls. Just to crawl on the pike for miles and miles. That's when I bring smokes and a cooler of beers.

/Mass highways can and will crush your soul.
//Built up resistance.

The Ontario solution to prevent congestion on toll roads is just to charge so much to use toll roads that only a few well-off or stupid people use them.

How about $20 for about 100KM (60 miles)?

And his day's tomorrow, according to the History channel. So either way, it's Coming to America weekend. With that in mind, I think we should all be shown that movie today in homage to the ideals set forth by the explorers.

Well I can always go for a good pillage and burning along the English northeast coast. Those Anglo Saxons haven't had a good viking raid in over 1000 years and it's about time they get the mother of all raids.

Yesterday I came back to DC from visiting relatives in Westminster. I took this wacky collection of roads -- South Street, Brigham Street, Worcester Road, Pommogussett Road... hell if I can remember, I just turned on the GPS and told it to get me to Rein's Deli in Connecticut. The foliage was gorgeous and I barely saw another car on the road until I got to I-84.

What Mass Pike?
