Well, my four thoughts going into the season are holding true so far:

(1) New England will still win the division (probably comfortably),
(2) Buffalo's defense is a fraud and Fitzpatrick blows,
(3) The Jets' will fall apart, and
(4) Miami will be a fair bit better than the idiots at ESPN suggested.

On 63 offensive plays.

Buffalo should just forfeit all their games for the rest of the year.

The Bills are a disgrace, and have been for years.

I'm frankly going to be hard pressed to give a damn about them until Ralph finally kicks it. That organization needs a top-to-bottom culture change, and they are not going to ever sniff the playoffs until Ralph is gone. It's a joke that Ralph is in the HoF.

The only thing that really sucks this year is that this is the point I would typically turn my attention to hockey and ignore the Bills' pathetic failings for the rest of the year. But the damn lockout means I don't even have that to watch. Hope they get it resolved quickly. As mediocre as the Sabres have been sometimes, they never really compare to the complete dysfunction and ingrained failure that is the Buffalo Bills.

I'm a die hard 49ers fan, but even I know that it takes a REALLY bad group defensive effort to make Alex Smith look like the second coming of Joe Montana. Thanks, Bills!

I hear ya man, I hear ya. Thanks to Fark I have a new hockey team, but following the Landshut Cannibals is going to be problematic at best. Columbus Day just doesn't have it's usual impact this year.

Sometimes I think that's been Ralph's secret agenda this whole time.

Suck so consistently for so long that even diehard Buffalo fans stop caring, and won't raise as much of a stink if the next owner tries to move the team.

Yesterday was weird. I don't think I've ever been as nonplussed after a combined Bears blowout win and a heartbreaking Packers loss as I was yesterday.

Orgasmatron138: roc6783: ***snip***
Dude, I'm a huge Bears fan and even I felt bad for you guys. What happened?

It is an incredibly complex and nuanced answer (snark), but I am pretty sure I can break it down...

1. 85% of our offensive plays are passes 20+ yds downfield, which is complicated by the fact that
2. Our O-Line sucks and
3. Our WRs can't get open so
4. Rodgers takes 10 sacks a game because he holds ball forever because of #3
5. Our D may have actually gotten worse with the addition of young draft picks because
6. No suitable replacement for Nick Collins has been found. Woodson is a great player, Collins ran that D

I am not one of those "ya gotta run the ball to win in the NFL" types at all, but what you do need to do, is be able to pick up 4-7 yds on a consistent basis. When the Packers went hurry up against the Seahawks, they absolutely shredded them. Yes, they got help from the refs, but the fact is the Seahawks couldn't do anything as the Packers marched down the field 4-7 yds at a time.

If you saw the Pats game yesterday, they were a perfect example of what the Packers should be running. Get one effective personnel group on the field and run 17 different quick, short plays as you march down the field. McCarthy is constantly trying to outsmart the other coach with complex fakes, motions, and formations, which all lead to 20+ yd passes. Dude, we get it. No matter what happens pre-snap, Rodgers is going to look for someone open behind the defense 20 yds downfield. If I know that is coming on most plays, opposing coaches sure as hell do.

Beating the Packers has now become an easy to use guide:
1. Jam the receivers and drop all coverage deep
2. Rush everyone that isn't covering, ie, if the Pack goes 3 wide, rush 5
3. Double team Clay Matthews
4. Wait for someone to blow coverage in the secondary

The Packers picked apart the Bears because they copied the Packers playbook and kept going for the home run instead of taking wide open shot when the DBs started looking in the backfield trying to jump shorter routes, plus Jay Cutler.

Oh and I absolutely love having Kaepernick as a renaissance man. If Smith and Kaepernick can coordinate properly, no defense will be able to stop them

2012-10-08 11:34:42 AM
If Aaron Rodgers engineers what would be a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, the defense will ALWAYS blow the lead. Doesn't matter how much time is left or how much they've stopped the opponent thus far. That's been the general rule for most of his career, which is why he has four fourth-quarter comeback wins in 4.25 years of playing. Hell, they blew the Saints game, but the Saints' kicker missed the FG.

2012-10-08 12:45:43 PM
I'm happy with the Bears win, but I just can't get that feeling of unrestrained happiness about the team. The D isn't going to score 2 TDs every week and the O has been getting out to horribly slow starts. I am not sure how this team might respond if they find themselves down two scores after a quarter. I know it's not likely given the state of the defense, but still...

Looks like I'll be finding something better to do on my Sundays for the rest of the season. What a mess. The Bills' coaches say they are to blame, the players say THEY are to blame. It's all the same, year after year. I've been reading stories this morning about how the players say that they didn't quit. No, instead they "didn't finish". Which to me is the same thing. Well, I quit. I think this is a new record for me. Week 5 and I'm done already. Pathetic.

True, but the Vikings game aside, which is completely inexplicable (the Vikes are looking surprisingly good this year and would have to be considered the surprise of the NFL, but they aren't as good as that), the Niners have looked really strong in every game. The Packers and Lions games were nowhere nearly as close as the scores would indicate. It's true that their next 5 opponents are all decent or better this year and currently all have winning records, but I'll be pretty surprised if the Niners don't win at least 4 of those 5.

I saw the writing on the wall a few years ago. The franchise is done until a change in upper management happens, and that won't happen until Ralph is gone. And then I fear (or maybe I am relieved, not sure) they will move. To LA. Before the Jaguars or anyone else. This next game is here in Phoenix and I'm not sure I want to go. I just wish they'll hurry and end the misery. It's been a painful decade of decline.

You need a defense to beat the Niners.

Packers? Not much of a defense.
Lions? No defense. Not even with Suh.
Vikings? Defense!
Jets? Defense on occasion, and the Niners had trouble moving the ball until the 80 turnovers.
Bills? Hilariously bad defense.

So yeah. The team isn't unstoppable or anything. But, it's nice to be good.

Bills? Hilariously bad defense.

The Bills have a defense in that there are 11 guys in a Bills uniform on the field when the opponent has the ball. Any other resemblance to an NFL caliber defense is coincidental.
