Some words of wisdom from when I was growing up.

If at first you do not succeed. Skydiving is not for you.

They should at least have mentioned Katharina or Kätchen Paulus, as she was one of the most remarkable female parachuting pioneers.

Skydiving seems like a perfectly lovely way to commit suicide. A long, exhilarating free fall, ending with a very swift and nearly certain death. Just gotta rig the chute right so it looks like an accident and your life insurance will pay off.

Good timing on this link...my Mom called me Saturday to tell me that, in celebration of her 70th birthday, she's going skydiving next month.

I told her I'd be on the ground waiting for her.

Ah, skydiving: because you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I looked at three different life insurance policies with different companies, and each of them asked whether or not I was a skydiver (or SCUBA diver, caver, etc.). If I'm not mistaken, my current policy explicitly exempts deaths resulting from skydiving from receiving the payout. From what I've read, this is pretty common. Note that this is independent of whether the skydiving death was an accident. YMMV.

Mostly we jumped out to save some bozo that didn't fly his correctly. SAR, because gravity sucks.

Deland, live & work here. Work for the local Altimeter company. If you go to the DZ and ask for Big John, they will know who you are talking about.

Yeah -- don't hook it into the dirt, don't fly into anything stupid, and remember to flare. Also, don't expect to make any weekend plans, ever. You still might end up catching a movie or something, but only if the weather turns out to be crap...

What's the difference between the 1st parachuting death and a blow job in a hot tub?

2012-10-10 11:14:38 AM
I did the tandem jump thing once. Dude asked if I wanted the "exciting" jump or "mellow" one. I opted for the "exciting" option, which entailed him doing multiple spins and flips after jumping out. The flips were cool and all, but it took away from the opportunity to just glide and enjoy the experience - I recommend the mellow option for any newbs.

/never jumped again since that time
/it was off the north shore of Hawaii and I'll never, ever forget that freefall view from around 8500 feet.
