I was born different from my brothers. And one day I hope, you'll like me, that you'll really like me.

Yeah, standing up for your own children is so worthy of a hero tag.  If a worthless sack of shiat like Dick Cheney did the same thing, then it's not heroic.

Considering how many gay people I've talked to who have had their parents reject them for being gay, and the incredible consequence it has had on their personalities, I'd say standing by your gay kid is a very heroic thing to do.

Actually Cheney standing up for his kid is more heroic than Fields standing up for hers. Not hard to stand up for a gay child in Hollywood, that is about as heroic being a star on Broadway and coming out of the closet

I never envied Chaney when it came to this. The man is evil, but he clearly loves his daughter and at least accepts her partner in the family. It couldn't have been easy to have to stay quiet on the subject, when your boss and your party think gay marriage is aberrant, but your daughter is gay and you want her to have what you and her mother have, but won't fight for it because it will be political suicide.

The son was surrounded by hollywood liberal types his whole easy life, methinks. Better to find some parent from a cornhole burg in the flyover states who stood by his/her son or daughter for meing gay.I've enjoyed Sally Field ever since Gidget days, and as a gay man I will always love her performances, and persona. And I'm sure the son is a fine young fellow..... Just not ready to throw laurels quite yet.

i might agree if sally was not a hollywood personality who has been surrounded by every type under the rainbow most of her life, as is usual for people in theatre & entertainment.

its also easy to hate on intolerant parents while overlooking who raised them and when. people don't become who they are, why they are, overnight.

and here is one that you'll really hate because not everyone can stand the smack of reality: there was a time when gays & lesbians did not shove their sexuality in everyones face to the point of rudeness. there have been gays & lesbians as far back as there has been mankind. society used to be more polite and civilized. everyone in the family would be well aware Uncle Harry was a flaming queen. but back then they just referred to him as a 'dedicated bachelor' and let it go at that. people that insist on clamoring for attention will surely get it. some will blow them kisses but a few may toss stones.

If Cheney was half as 'heroic' or courageous as you two think, he would have bailed on the GOP on this issue and gone public years ago. As it is, he's still largely 'in the closet' about it publicly, and stood by while his party and administration ran roughshod over gay citizens in this country. I'm sorry, but I can't possibly respect that. All this comes down to is that he didn't go full Keynes and kick his gay daughter out, but we should hope that anyone with even a shred of decency would be like that. A man who doesn't shut his own family out over his associates' stated 'values' isn't a hero, just an ordinary guy who's not a total dick. A hero would have been willing to stand up, stand apart, and risk everything for his own blood. Cheney has not, and apparently will not.

Hey asshole, you tell people you're straight about a dozen times every day. Do you wear a wedding band? You're advertising that you're straight. Do you talk about your opposite sex spouse / partner to your friends and coworkers? You're telling them that you're straight. Do you converse about what opposite sex entertainers you find attractive? Straight.

Now that gay people feel less ashamed of who they are and are willing to acknowledge that fact the same as straight people do, suddenly we are 'shoving it in peoples' faces.'

That bullshiat phrase is along the same lines of, "Remember when black people were less uppidy and women stayed in the kitchen?" It's 'romantically' remembering the 'good ol' times' when gay people were too afraid to be open about who they are, and too afraid to stand up and demand equal rights.

So go fark yourself, you bigoted piece of shiat.

Define "rudeness".

1. Wanting employment...like everyone else.
2. Wanting a place to live...like everyone else.
3. Wanting to love someone publicly and proudly...like everyone else.
4. Wanting to share property and legal protections...like everyone else.
5. Wanting to walk down the street without fear of being assaulted or killed...like everyone else.

It wasn't too long ago in Hollywood that being outed ruined your career.

no, I'm not a big fan of television about television. In fact, I think there's something really farking wrong with people who talk about famous people. I think their lives must be goddamn pathetic. Oh, and I'm not a kid, nor am I someone with a single or double digit iq, so yeah, I have better things to talk about than that.. It's like talking about the weather at best.
