(BBC)   River Phoenix's final movie is finished. Well, only 80% finished. Actually, there's a lot of popcorn and bathroom breaks in it   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 28

Considering the level of talent Phoenix was at, why even dig the footage out of the garbage?

I met River Phoenix once cause I was trying to date this girl who sang for some indie band in Gainesville and they all hung around together. He was busy acting like a dick. I met Michael Stipe the same way. Also a dick. It was important to be an asshole if you were cool in those days. I was not.

Honestly, the story behind the making of this flick sounds far more interesting than the flick itself.

No, I'd bet money Stipe is still a dick.

At least Phoenix's dickishness was partially explained by the whole "being a smack addict" thing. What was Stipe's excuse?

It bothers me those dicks were going to burn his last film. What the hell is wrong with people...

It's actually pretty good.

It was okay.

Really it's only so-so.

Honestly, I didn't like it very much.

It's quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

DESTROY THIS MOVIE! KILL ALL THE DVDs!

What's the problem? All the director needs to do is hire his wife's chiropractor to stand in for River in the rest of the scenes and find some clever way to obscure his face in each shot.

CSB: I met Phoenix too under different circumstances, I think. He was touring with his band Aleka's Attic and donating proceeds to save the rainforests. He and his cult family drove around in a Partridge Family type bus that was dirty and utterly ridiculous. I managed the nightclub he was playing in DC and he hid in my office for two hours to escape his entourage and we drank some beers and talked. When I told him I met his uncle "Sky Phoenix," he said, "that dude's not my uncle" and was clearly irritated. He kept telling me how cool my job was, which was hilarious to me coming from a movie star and I assured him the job often sucked. I got the sense that he hated his circumstances even more than I disliked mine. I told him I wanted to quit and become a writer (which I did) and he genuinely told me that if I ever wrote a screenplay to send it to him. It was a kind thing to offer and he was not dickish at all to me. Dying before I could write it - that was the dick move. Of course, I still haven't tried at a screenplay.

I still have a bass guitar instructional video River did with Flea. It is unlike any other instructional video I rented at a local music shop. I told the owner I would not be returning it. I'm pretty sure they were tripping on shrooms, and coke during filming.

the saddest thing about River dying is that Joaquin is still alive.

The only two movies of his where I thought he did OK were "Gladiator" and "Walk the Line". In both of those, he played seriously screwed up individuals. He does that well. Too bad the latter was ruined by giving the role of June Carter to Pug-face Giant Forehead McGee.

Born that way. And River's problem extended back a lot further than his drug problem. As is mentioned in the article, he grew up in a cult, in part in Central America, and his parents did the best job they could farking up their children.

I've always suspected he took the role in Mosquito Coast because it wasn't too far from his real life, growing up.

Went by "Leaf" then. Chose it to better match with his older siblings. Dropped it after River died.

Why didn't they go full-on Brandon Lee and use a double for the missing scenes?

River should do more movies. He's been looking pretty good recently.

I'm interested in seeing it. Stand By Me was and still is one of my favorite movies, and I was compared to him often by people I met. I won't go in expecting to see a movie though, I'll go expecting to see the piece meal parts of the final days of his life in pseudo documentary. With Heath, seeing the mental state of the Joker and then catching Parnassus... it was easy to imagine how one could be in a really bad place mentally.

It's obscure in that you missed the last post that beat you.
