I would take it with a grain of salt anyway. This sounds a lot like those stories where the pledge of allegiance and the flag are supposedly banned by evil liberal teachers.

Yeah, I'd only get offended in the slightest by this story if a kid were allowed to wear an Obama/Biden T-shirt. Which I bet they wouldn't be.

Here, however, the principal made the teacher apologize, and there's an investigation ongoing. The kid has the right to wear the T-shirt; the teacher was in the wrong, and should get some remedial training on the bounds of student freedom of expression.

That said, the political right will have fun hyping this up as an infringement of student rights. For contrast, the reaction by the right wingers at the Blaze over the "Jesus is not a homophobe" T-shirt back in April.

I have a very, very strong suspicion that we are not hearing the full story here.

the teacher asked me... 'Are your parents Republican?' I said, 'I don't know.'

So either, you as a high school kid are astute enough to have a preference for presidential candidates but not inquisitive enough to know which candidates your parents support

OR

Your parents bought you the shirt and told you to wear it to school and try to make a scene, and you really don't have any understanding of or interest in the issues or candidates.

From what I know of high school kids, I know which way I would bet.

Maybe. We have the student's mother's accusation, but I'm not sure that's sufficient evidence. Given my experiences, I'm pretty skeptical of the student's claim, and far more skeptical of her mother's accusation. If the teacher said that, she was being stupid, but I'm not ready to convict just yet.

Much as I'm not a fan of Romney/Ryan, I think comparing them to the KKK is ridiculous. That's not right.

"If it was a joke between two adults, I can take a joke like that but (my daughter) didn't know how to take it. She doesn't understand, she actually thinks she did something wrong," her father, Richard Pawlucy, said.

If the kid doesn't understand the potential consequences of wearing such a shirt, perhaps she shouldn't wear it in the first place.

It's quite obvious that her parents put her up to it.

Well, I strongly suspect that clothing with political slogans is banned. I know that it is at many schools.

I have several students that wear Romney/Ryan t-shirts to my classes. No one's had any issues or told me about conflicts with other faculty. One of my graders is a Ron Paul fan and one of my best students last spring was a big Santorum fan. If you can't get past the fact that your students might have political opinions of their own and separate that out, that's a mark against your professionalism whether at the secondary, primary or collegiate level.

I hope you're trolling. There should be no potential consequences for wearing "such a shirt" unless it defies an explicit universal dress code for everyone.

Wore this in the 1980's to Junior High school. No issues. Wore it once to my Civics's teacher's house with some friends. And there...I ran into some problems. But that's his house, after all.

Nope. I didn't say that the kid should be prohibited from wearing her Romney shirt to school, but if you're going to wear something that bears controversial words or images, don't be surprised if some people react negatively. Crying to your mother, "WAAAAAH! My teacher didn't like my shirt!" is ridiculous.

Which it obviously did.

When I was at the nude beach, I could rock out with my cock out. When I'm on the subway here in the city, very different rules apply.

When you're in junior high in the 80's wearing a shirt that was about events over 40 years old at that point, that's a very different situation than a girl in the 2012 wearing a political shirt from the current election cycle.

If you'd have worn your clever little shirt to school in 1949, I would expect your reception to be less warm at school, especially if your teacher was a vet.
