WienerButt: Seriously, what the hell is this? I don't want some half-assed, sarcastic response or meme picture given to me; what the fark is this Pony thing? I'm confused as hell. Is this a new continuation of the My Little Pony series from a couple of decades back? Is this an actual show kids watch but people use the images of the characters as memes on the internet? Is this some Adult Swim show I'm not aware of that stoners enjoy? What.the.fark. is this pony stuff???

/hoping one sane individual responds

I'll give you two options of responses, and you're free to take whichever answer you deem is more appropriate.

Non-Snarky Answer: Yes, there was a relaunch of the My Little Pony franchise in October of 2010. It was directed (at first) by Mrs Lauren Faust, who had previously done a huge swath of major cartoon hits Her IMDB page provides plenty of examples. As an honest Pony fan (seriously, no snark), I enjoy the show. It's cleverly written without getting preachy, and the characters are complex enough to be engaging. For example, my favorite Pony is the drama-laden, fashion-conscious diva named Rarity. In almost any other show geared for children, such a character would be a minor villain or a petty side character; in "Friendship is Magic", she is presented as a flawed character and given opportunity to grow within the confines of the show. It's still simplistic, but the target audience IS little girls.

If it's not your thing, by all means don't try to force yourself to get into it. I can respect that. But, I do believe the show is one of the finest examples of contemporary Western animation within the last 5 to 6 years. If you'd like to give it a shot, I can provide a link to a neutral episode (yes, some are very sugary and provide a very difficult sell on the show being quality material).

Snarky Answer - Because ponies are t3h sexy, and we fans want to make centaur babies.

It's similar to a Dr. Who or ComicCon thing. Some people who are fans go to conventions and cosplay.

Welcome to the Herd, my brothers and sisters. There's donuts in the back, tea in the front, and plushies in every chair to hug. Chrysalis will be back later tonight to talk about how she wanted to really just make friends.

That show is like Lay's chips...you can't watch just one. My kids got me into MLP:FIM (middle and high school boys no less, according to them most of the kids at school watch it, whether boy or girl).

Oh hey, look, yet anothera ddition of that thread where socially awkward nerds who post on Fark make fun of other socially awkward nerds for liking a cartoon.

Since this happens at least once a week now, maybe we should make this into a Pony Thread Drinking Game.

Take a drink every time a poster mentions:

Pedophile/pedophilia

Furries or Fursuits

Anytime a pony fan corrects another poster on minutiae from the show.

Someone posts a Derpy picture.

Take TWO drinks if anyone mentions:

Pegasisters

Friendship Cannon

Sweetie Bot

Cider

I've grown weary of the brony fandom over the last several months. I hardly interact with my local meetup group anymore. The main reason: socially awkward, self-entitled nerds. Every fandom has them but you can usually ignore them if you're still new enough to a fandom that everything seems bright and new and wonderful. But I've seen everything that bronies have to offer. Sure, new iterations are always coming out, but nothing truly novel. I'm just tired of it all and them. Still, it's like a drug. I can't quite get myself to quit because I still find the show to be enjoyable and I'm buried neck deep in so many different projects where I do fan voice acting that I can't up and abandon my friends with whom I work. I'm just sort of in limbo, I suppose. At least there are other things I can distract myself with from the monotony of daily life such as Doctor Who and Gravity Falls. Ah well.

People who use Warhammer 40k memes to make fun of other things amuses me. Your hobby is stupid! Unlike mine, were I spend hundred, if not thousands on all these little miniature figures that I have to paint myself, and then make do battle on terrain that I design, paint and put together myself and spend even more money, after learning textbooks full of rules

Really Warhammer people...if you're going to be smug, look around at the caliber of people at your next game night, and think if you're -really- better than bronies.

/Full disclosure not a brony, but a huge fat nerd.

I'm not necessarily sand, but I can give you a reasonable response...

The memes and the fandom are based on the Generation 4 My Little Pony show, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It is, basically, a My Little Pony reboot. The creators working on the show come from many beloved cartoons, like Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, Fairly Oddparents, Dexter's Laboratory, and Samurai Jack.

The internet love of the show started at 4chan, when someone actually watched an episode. Instead of having a reason to shiat on it for being a toy selling crap show for girls (as was the original series), it turned out that the new MLP show was a solid cartoon for all ages and genders that happened to star candy colored ponies.

The memes grew from there.

Probably not. But Tara showing up as Twi was the height of Canterlot Gardens. Only slightly above John DiMaggio's "Was there ever any doubt?" Bender as Trixie is just amazing.

The clip in question:

Whatever the con's genre, a live, blind reading of any script by the guests of honor always results in hilarity. Bender as Trixie was glorious, and anyone who has issues with that can bite my shiny metal plot!

Bronycon (yes, it's a real thing, alas) was in Secaucus this year. I accidentally found myself driving on 3 while it was going on. I've never wanted to bully nerds like that before in my life... and I'm a nerd. I just felt like punching and taking lunch money. Weird feelings for sure.

No, no, no, it's about the decline of masculinity, or ZOMG PEDOFILE, or how we should all be miserable, joyless adults, or, I dunno, some other reason for people to feel superior and smug because their own lives are complete and total shiat... examples of which you will soon see in this thread now that it's went green.

/or, maybe they're just naturally hysterical, and need a fainting couch.
