fragMasterFlash: I'm pretty sure that barcode tat in TFA is a social security number. Get that guys name and DOB and you own him.

If you're just talking about the nine inner numbers, I don't think "583" is a valid SSN prefix. My thought was that it's the last four digits of his SSN (0583), along with his date of birth (1-13-1977).

Isn't that the Austrian spelling for noon?

Benjimin_Dover: Confabulat: I remember the same sort of right-wing conspiracy theorists we have today were sure the bar code would end America in the 1980s.

Do they ever get anything right?

Except that they were left-wing conspiracy theorists, sure.

I wasn't there, but surely, by definition, it was a Republican conspiracy theory? It was all about religion, and spread due to poor education, which are central tenets of the GOP.

The GOP wouldn't exist without poorly-educated religious people voting against their own interests.

It was right-wing corporate fatcats are who wanted the barcode in the store so they could get rid of workers.

Uh, I'm pretty sure you missed an "accidentally" out of that sentence.

But yeah, the current state of the technology is that we now go to supermarkets and we're expected to do our own checkout operation, with 12 checkouts watched over by one pimply-faced youth, where in the past we would have had several checkouts individually manned.

So, there are fewer checkout operators. But there are more people designing and servicing the self-checkouts, more people developing better technologies for tracking what you buy to target marketing to your demographic. And so on.

/It still sucks balls when the scales can't understand your purchase and the PFY is busy dealing with other issues, however.

wildcardjack: Several times I've had to give a quick holocaust lesson to people who've gotten sets of numbers tattooed on their bodies. To you it might be a sign of loyalty to have your husband or beau's military serial number tattooed on your forearm but to those of us who know our history it's how they kept track of Jews in the camps.

There should be an abhorrence of getting serial numbers tattooed on bodies.

/But I love barcodes for business reasons.
//I have two bluetooth barcode scanners, one for at home, one for on the road. Never leave home without one.

Actual scannable barcode tattoos aren't exactly plausible. You can make something that'll visually look like a barcode, but unless the lines are straight and even it isn't likely to scan. Skin moves differently than a plastic bag and think how much trouble scanning a bag of something sometimes is. Modern scanners are much better, but still wouldn't always scan a tattooed barcode.

RFID chips would be the better bet. Could be installed much quicker and would be easier to scan. Not to mention the possibilities of a longer distance it could be scanned over.

Good thing I've stocked up on tinfoil.

This one time, in Victoria, BC, I was walking down the street and came across a place called the Barcode Nightclub. Any Victoria Farkers know much about that place? Also, happy Thanksgiving weekend to ya.

How many different online dictionaries did you have to go through to find one that misspells the root and then corrects itself? "Noone" isn't "no one." It's incorrect. The Great Mediocre lose this round.

Why don't you Google the word "dictionary" and discover that dictionary.com is the first result? Click here if you need help with that.

It also provides a nice quotation, using the word noone, by E.E. Cummings, a writer more skilled than you ever will be.

/sorry, you asked for it

Hey, it isn't like I have a vested interest in your embarrassment. "Noone" makes you look like an idiot, no matter when or where it was ever accepted. Go ahead and use it if you want. Just please don't capitalize e.e. cummings if you want people to believe you have ever read any of his work.

Oh, by the way, if you're going to stalk off to research who e.e. cummings is, would you mind not demonstrating how to google "wikipedia" in your attempt to explain why citing him in a debate about the rules of the English written language, without any irony, is a stroke of genius?

Don't decapilalize E.E. Cummings if you want people to believe you have ever read any of his work. It was others who did it, thinking it fit with his style, not him. But don't take my word for it...

Awww, did you just stalk off to Wikipedia, notice that they said his name is often "written by others in lowercase letters as e.e. cummings" and you had to come back trying to save face? I couldn't understand how to make sense out of the rest of that run-on stitched-together sentence, except the part saying I had a stroke of genius. Thanks!

Look. "Noone" is improper. That's all I had to say. If you don't get the e.e. cummings reference, you don't get it. Knock yourself out with the "noone," just try not to hurt yourself getting snooty with the people who tell you it isn't a word.
