I remember the same sort of right-wing conspiracy theorists we have today were sure the bar code would end America in the 1980s.

Do they ever get anything right?

The submission of this is causing trouble for me as the headline just says to me that the character has not been found by others and for this reason I am thinking that someone has done the hacking of the computer of me and took the characters away!

Several times I've had to give a quick holocaust lesson to people who've gotten sets of numbers tattooed on their bodies. To you it might be a sign of loyalty to have your husband or beau's military serial number tattooed on your forearm but to those of us who know our history it's how they kept track of Jews in the camps.

There should be an abhorrence of getting serial numbers tattooed on bodies.

/But I love barcodes for business reasons.

There are now more than five million individual barcodes in use around the world, according to regulator GS1 UK.

Only 5 million individual barcodes? Would someone explain to this old geezer how, out of the billions of distinct products, there are only 5 million distinct barcodes.

/or is this some other definition of 'million' that I am unaware of?

Umm, no.

A UK million is a US million, a UK thousand million is a US billion, and a UK billion is a US trillion.

It's different, but it's not just "Opposites Day every day" in the UK.

No.

Million = million
It only gets weird when you go to billion/trillion.

It depends where you want to draw the line, and it's fairly arbitrary. In the strictest sense, all humans are immigrants everywhere except the Great Rift Valley. Anything after about 200,000 years ago, you have to decide what arbitrary rule you're going to apply.

So, one day this guy sees his Jewish neighbor putting up a statue of Hitler in his front yard. He walks over and asks the guy what he's doing.
"I won the lottery!"
"But why in the WORLD would you pout up a statue of HITLER?
The guy extends his arm, pulls up his sleeve and goes, "Well, he gave me the numbers, so why not?"

I'm nearly certain that the reporter just called up UPC Search, a free site listing 5 million known items... which isn't in any way affiliated with any organization and is populated by one dude with an odd hobby. Nobody really knows how many have been issued, since companies aren't under any obligation to submit their lists of UPCs.

Identity theft tends to be most effective when the victim has good credit. Someone who would tattoo a pseudo-barcode with their SSN on the back of their neck doesn't strike me as "Good decision maker." I think he'll be fine.

Well, more accurately, I'm sure he already has the credit score of someone whose identity was stolen.
