Actually, I think it's a great idea- celebrate the courage, audacity, and sense of adventure that explorers represent. It's what this country is supposed to be about anyway.

It's OK for big nations to bully small nations, for white people to dominate people of color, to celebrate the colonialists with no attention paid to the perspectives of the colonized, to view history solely from the standpoint of the winners.

why would we want to stop celebrating that? USA USA USA

i've been pissed since the made "presidents" day. if MLK was important enough to have his own day why did he have to steal it from Lincoln.

I know quite a few Ásatrúar who already refer to it as "Leif Eriksson's Day" and point out that Columbus never set foot on the mainland.

It was Civil Rights Day in NH for a very long time. I think they have since changed it though because the KKK would defend NH thinking it was because NH didn't like King when instead it was because more than one person helped with civil rights.

Are the people who say Columbus was a "mass murdering moron" idiots? Do you really believe that?

1.- Columbus requested a crew. The Catholic Monarchs gave him a bunch of criminals who were imprisoned for murder, rape and armed robbery because they didn't believe Columbus was going to get anywhere and they didn't want to lose good men.

2.- One of the first things Columbus did after discovering America? Getting himself jailed and relieved from command.

So, any genocide against the natives was made by the Spaniards, NOT Columbus.

You wouldn't have this problem if you had made it Thanksgiving like sensible people.

Columbus Day? What's that about, then? Isn't it the day they plant trees?

No, it's like all the other damnèd holidays. Everybody goes shopping. The malls are full of Canadians as far South as Watertown and everybody whines, "What are all these people doing in my mall, getting in my way and buying the third rate crap that my companies specially produce to be sold on holdiays?" Then everybody has Thanks ... I mean Columbus Day dinner at a chain restaurant with too much crap on the walls and then home to vegetate in front of the TV during some interminable football game that is replacing all the good TV shows of the week.

Happy Columbus Day!

Damn Columbus. Greasy little SOB, the Jews and the Afro-Centrists can have him. Everybody else discovered America before him any way. Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Basque fishermen, the Irish, Britons (minus their King, although he later paid them to rediscover it), Vikings, Africans, Muslims, the Chinese, etc.

for example, King Ferdinand:

"The late Pope gave these islands and mainland of the ocean and the contents hereof to the above-mentioned King and Queen, as is certified in writing and you may see the documents if you should so desire. . . . . Therefore, we request that you understand this text, deliberate on its contents within a reasonable time, and recognize the Church and its highest priest, the Pope, as rulers of the universe, and in their name the King and Queen of Spain as rulers of this land, allowing the religious fathers to preach our holy Faith to you . . . . Should you fail to comply, or delay maliciously in so doing, we assure you that with the help of God we shall use force against you, declaring war upon you from all sides and with all possible means, and we shall bind you to the yoke of the Church and of Their Highnesses; we shall enslave your persons, wives and sons, sell you or dispose of you as the King sees fit; we shall seize your possessions and harm you as much as we can as disobedient and resisting vassals. And we declare you guilty of resulting deaths and injuries, exempting Their Highnesses of such guilt as well as ourselves and the gentlemen who accompany us."

Back in college we never had Columbus day off because fall break was always the week after and we got 2 days off. No idea if it was intentional because they didn't want to honor Columbus or if it was a better divider of the semester. And there was a movement by groups on campus to call it "Indigenous People's Day" anyway.

Sounds good. Christopher Columbus was a Goddamn moron. Every educated person back then knew how large the Earth was because that had been figured out two thousands years ago. They knew how far away Asia was and that sailing Westward to it was futile. Columbus however believed a different measurement that people knew was wrong. Then he arrives in the Caribbean and thinks they're in India because Columbus has no farking clue what India is actually like even though that's where he was trying to go the entire time. Then when other explorers are like "Yo dog, we're pretty sure these islands ain't India. India has like cities and shiat" Columbus continues to maintain that he had found India. Then add onto that that Columbus never reached the land that would become the United States, and that he wasn't the first European to reach America anyway there's zero reason to have a holiday to this guy.

Normally, I hate this kind of 'inclusive' nonsense; just leave well-enough along.

But this, THIS, is pretty damned good idea (unless we have to include all the sub-groups that had minor, if any, participation in the discoveries, i.e., the gay - if there were any, porters that carried L&C's stuff onto their boat, the women that brought food to the docks for Columbus, the gay women that drove trucks around Cape Canaveral, you know, crap like that cuz if they do, fark it).

Blankets? Really? In the Caribbean? LOL

You're thinking of the Englishmen.

I don't see any need to restrict the celebration to explorers. Let's just make it Everybody Day, Which Up Until Recently Was Columbus's and celebrate everyone who is remembered for anything: Nebuchadnezzar, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Casper Van Dien, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Eddie the Eagle, Zoroaster, Seve Ballesteros ...

2012-10-07 04:59:10 PM

GAT_00: As long as it takes Columbus off of that list, I'm fine with that. There is no reason we should celebrate a mass murdering moron.

For connecting Europe and the Americas, and turning the world upside down. Its not like his life got too much better from doing it.
Also why would Columbus want to kill of his potential slave work force? Not to forget, the day he died he thought he had just found Asia.

/what about Washington or Lincoln?
//war is somewhat subjective

I say we have Multicultural Week right after Apologist's Day, which would be after Give a Lot of Money to Raise Awareness of Some Dumb Bullshiat month.

I'm sure this would do a lot of good or something.

In Scotland's Knights Templar Rosslyn Chapel, there are clear depictions of corn and aloe cactus found on the archways and ceiling. These plants were officially discovered in America and first brought to Europe in the 16th century. How then did the Masons building Rosslyn Chapel, completed in 1486, know about these plants at least 6 years before Columbus set sail?
Therefore, Columbust must of been a time traveler and a Templar or a time traveling Templar.

AdolfOliverPanties: I like it. And I don't even get the day off.

Exploration Day or Explorers Day.

Not because any political correctness or anything but because Lewis and Clark and others deserve just as much as Columbus, who lets face it, got really farking lost.

Yeah, this. We should be honoring anyone brave enough to say "Hey, wonder what's on the other side of that mountain? Let's go find out!"

IronOcelot: Ol' Chris did introduce a rudimentary tribute system for gold and cotton that was based on the encomienda system of the Reconquista that was incredibly brutal. That right there was damning in and of itself.

Except he didn't. That was, once again, the Spaniards under the rule of Ovando. Who was indeed cruel and brutal.

Columbus got to Hispaniola with a bunch of criminals instead of a crew. He left for Spain to bring more resources, came back to a rebellion, since now actual Spaniard military was with him, they crushed that. Columbus then got back to Spain, got slapped with some jail. Came back and wandered some more around the Venezuelan area. Got jailed big time. After several years he was given a fourth trip and then got jailed shortly afterwards LOL.

The Catholic Monarchs just wanted to screw him over since they had signed the rights to him over the land he'd discover. They didn't have any hope he'd find anything worthwhile lol. In the end, his sons got an arrangement and received Hispaniola as their realm for a while.

She wasn't hiding she was just too blind and deaf to know where she was

Pretty sure she also was one that sat on that bus and ran the underground railroad

By "underground railroad", I hope you mean BART, as only then would it be safe to allow a woman to drive anything... since it was designed to be driverless originally. As for the bus? Well, I hope her seeing eye dog knows how to steer!

I'll give up Columbus Day when it's against the law for the federal government, or any branch of any government or federally exempt 501(c)3 to to promote Hispanic Recognition Month or Black History Month.

You eliminate your racist preference programs and then we'll talk about this Columbus character.

How come Americans stick to the founding myth that Columbus discovered America, when in fact he never set foot there and Europeans had already landed in North America ? Canadians gave up on that decades ago. And we don't celebrate Columbus Day, either.

Also, how exactly are Charles Lindbergh or Amelia Earhart explorers ?

As for Lewis and Clarke, if it hadn't been for their large accompanying crew of natives and French-Canadian coureurs des bois, they would not have been able to discover any of the territory already inhabited by....natives and French-Canadian coureurs des bois.

I know that, and I'm saying that they still hang on to the belief that Columbus was the European who discovered this continent, on which a country by the same name was eventually founded.

rocky_howard: Are the people who say Columbus was a "mass murdering moron" idiots? Do you really believe that?

1.- Columbus requested a crew. The Catholic Monarchs gave him a bunch of criminals who were imprisoned for murder, rape and armed robbery because they didn't believe Columbus was going to get anywhere and they didn't want to lose good men.

2.- One of the first things Columbus did after discovering America? Getting himself jailed and relieved from command.

So, any genocide against the natives was made by the Spaniards, NOT Columbus.

Yeah, I think people have their Columbus and Cortez mixed up or something. Columbus' trips might have been pivotal in starting the series of events that led to downfall of the various native peoples, but Columbus' own motivation and behavior was actually pretty good (less about greed and exploitation) than the subsequent actual conquistadors.
