Columbus day isn't a highly celebrated day around my neck of the woods.

Yeah, I'm down with that.

How about megalomaniacal genocidal maniacs? That would fit nicely too.

Shadow Blasko: Yeah, I'm down with that.

Actually, I think it's a great idea- celebrate the courage, audacity, and sense of adventure that explorers represent. It's what this country is supposed to be about anyway.

As long as it takes Columbus off of that list, I'm fine with that. There is no reason we should celebrate a mass murdering moron.

Does a sound stage in Burbank count? I really want a day to celebrate Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and that other kid who isn't a fat Jerry McConnell.

I like it. And I don't even get the day off.

Exploration Day or Explorers Day.

Not because any political correctness or anything but because Lewis and Clark and others deserve just as much as Columbus, who lets face it, got really farking lost.

Yeah, furniture stores. Why on earth having a blowout on bunk beds is relevant to Columbus is beyond me though.

Never realized he was intentionally mass-murdering people. You have a citation to where he claimed to want to kill off the natives and decided to use disease to do it? Since, you know, it was murder and all.

If we assume the point of Columbus Day is to honor Italian-Americans (as opposed to explorers), then I submit:

Toscanini Day

/Honors an actual Italian-American (not sure if citizen but whatever)
//Opera conductor = most Italian profession evar
///Fought Italian fascism

It's OK for big nations to bully small nations, for white people to dominate people of color, to celebrate the colonialists with no attention paid to the perspectives of the colonized, to view history solely from the standpoint of the winners.

why would we want to stop celebrating that? USA USA USA

i've been pissed since the made "presidents" day. if MLK was important enough to have his own day why did he have to steal it from Lincoln.

2012-10-07 02:24:29 PM
I know quite a few Ásatrúar who already refer to it as "Leif Eriksson's Day" and point out that Columbus never set foot on the mainland.

Personally I refer to it as "Indian Dudes Day, feather not dot" because I lack the filter in my brain that tells me when to actually pretend I am somewhat PC.

/how exactly "discover" something that already has people living there?
