How much for just a cay?

I don't know. I've always heard that no man is an island, so I assume that no group of men can be an archipelago.

Not a bad idea. We could load it up with Quakers, lolCats and cheerleaders

/though we would likely all get timeouts from the islands

I think Fark has matured past the point where people hype buying an island/air craft carrier and then there are people in the community that think it is a good idea. Let Fark be the site that germinates these Internet Forums Rite of Passages. Fly interesting story! FLY TO YOUR DESTINY!

How does this even work? Is there no government that claims sanction over this land? In all reality - isn't this like buying your own, albeit small - country?

It looks OK, but not supervillain-worthy or even like the kind of place you'd buy if you wanted a private island. It looks well-suited to what the guy originally used it for, cattle-raising. I bet the fishing is amazing, but you can do the same fishing off a beach on the mainland for a lot cheaper.

Coldwell Banker island and resort specialist Richard Vanhoff said interest in the archipelago had been "enormous".

Then why hasn't it sold already for 15 million?

actually, why not?
I'm surprised there isn't a kickstarter for real estate buys.

1 million people @ $100 each. you get a certificate, some other stuff, etc. ownership is given to a trust fund. after purchase it get set aside as a private wildlife preserve.

$12 = get certificate, emails, stickers, etc
$100 = get pieces of the island sent to you on your birthday
$1000 = get voting rights on board of trustees, 2 visitor's passes a year
$5000 = all the above plus a timeshare
$10,000 = docking rights

www.privateislandsonline.com

It's listed as a leasehold, so it looks like you don't really "buy" it like you can buy an aircraft carrier or a sports team. I assume it's under the jurisdiction of the Australian Reichstag or whatever they call it, as, unfortunately, buying an island doesn't make it sovereign any more than, say, you buying your house would make you Prince Rooster of Cogburn. That's why they could send Nick Cage to that island with the birds and the bees.

Not bad! That's 3272.66 acres at $3666.74 an acre. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Interesting. If I ever happen across a million dollars, that seems to be one of the wise ways of conserving and generating financial stability.

/ Fat chance, eh?

Uh, no. The AUD is worth a smidgeon more than USD, so the price in USD is slightly over 12 million. How'd you get 11.6 million?

2012-10-07 09:05:38 PM
Yeah, but the cost to have the veterinarian remove the archipelago's venomous spikes and flesh-stabbing fangs ends up doubling the effective cost...

Or, I could get 120,000 farkers to chip in $100 each.

Frankly, this sounds like a grand idea for Facebook. If I could only be bothered with it....
