Does that headline imply there is a "Best Pennsylvania"? Does that make (presumably) Big Ben one of the Jong Ills?

Important developments happened during the bye week, and I'm not talking about the return of all those who have been injured to our team.

I not only got a new 19" LCD TV but our cable provider finally got NFL Network so I can watch the PIT vs TEN game on the 11th. This is big.

We all know Philly is not technically part of this state, therefore they are the worst team.

I look at it more as a showdown between Mike the Doggy Killer vs. Ben the Rapist.

2012-10-07 10:03:09 AM
My predictions for the day:

-Manning will throw for 4 TD's and will be sacked repeatedly
-Green Bay will destroy Luck
-Jay Cutler still won't realize that ΚΑΛΛΙΣΤΗΙ isn't actually Brett Favre's signature
-the Lions will finally break their streak of allowing both a Punt Return and Kickoff Return for TD's in calendar weeks
-Cam Newton will pout, sulk and somehow beat the Seahawks
-The Steelers will tell Vick to "SIT", "STAY", "ROLL OVER" and "PLAY DEAD" but in a cruel twist of irony, won't actually give him any milkbones.
-When asked about the Chiefs chances of beating the Ravens, some Baltimore fan will bastardize Edgar Allen Poe's writings
-Pictures of cheerleaders will be posted. Some will be of cheerleaders that look to elicit slightly NFL-unfriendly cheers
-Miami will start to wonder if they really should have let Chad Henne go
-Atlanta will continue on their trek of being the Buffalo Bills of 2012
-Screw Tennessee. Screw Minnesota. TIE YOU BASTARDS! TIE!
-The 49ers will watch the Bills play with a look of puzzlement on their faces as they wonder "If they stole our playbook... why are they still running head-first at the cliff?"
-The Saints will continue on their trek to being the 2008 Detroit Lions.
-Tim Tebow will look up at the sky and say "Why hast thou forsaken me?" after Rex Ryan throws him to the Texans.

Fins @ Bengs (-4) 43
Bengs 2-0 at hoem thus far witha pretty strong offense: avergaing 28 per, and 390 all purpose per. Miami kept Arizona in check last week (for the first half, certainly, and they showed a strong pass rush but Arizona's line in awful so don't read too much into that). Interestingly, MIA has the best rush defense in the NFL, giving up only 56 per. Miami leading the NFL in anything is a new development! I think Bengs go to 4-1 here and relatively easily. Screw the points, Bengs and I like the over. 43 seems suspect given how both clubs can score.

Vens (-7) @ Chiefs 45.5
I'm surprised the line is this low! Gotta say Edgar Allans outright.

Browns @ Giants (-13) 44
Browns are dreadful. I don't like this monster number, but there's no reason to think otherwise. and teh under is intriguing; for teams a collective 2-6, neither gives up a ton of points. I'll say Giants outright but I'd take the under.

GB (-7.5) @ Colts 48
I've heard chatter about how 2-2 GB is overrated, but I haven't seen them play enough to make my own determination. A quick look at their stats showsn them to me in the middle of the NLF mroe or less across the board (yards, points, rush). And, with Bruce Arians taking over for Colts coach Chuck Pagano; you have to wonder, with NO giving a convenient example, of how much the team responds to losing its coach. Against better judgment, I'm going to pick the Colts to cover. If the line was lower I'd think about it but 7.5 I think is a biiiiiiiiit much to me. Pack are 0-1 OTR (loss to SEA) and Colts 1-1 home; keep in mind one of those was over a Vikes team that suddenly in the last 2 weeks has become very sexy. Packers have a higher scoring average per but Colts more yards....I think the COlts will keep it close at minimum.

ATL (-3.5) @ Wash 50.5
this should be higher...I can only think that this line is due to Wash's resurgence and an attempt to get more action on the number. Now, I'm not saying Wash is good, but they're one of those teams that when they get something close to good, they get overrated. As a historic franchise, there's lots of goodwill in the bank for them when they start looking good. Wash scores a remarkable 30 per (4th in NFL) but has a rather weak D, so I'll say ATL outright. and the over!

PHI @ PITT (-2.5) 44.5
I have to say Stillers outright. You have to wonder when Mike Vick gets KTFO and the Nic Foles era starts. No idea on the o/u.

Bears (-3) @ Jax 40.5
3-1 Bears, 1-3 Jax. Bears have the 4th stingiest D in the NFL poinswise......Gotta say Bears outright.

SEA @ CARO (-2) 44.5
Long roader for SEA.....I don't know why CARO is favored......huh. I'll pick SEA outright. I've seen them enough to know they're better than they appear and I think better than their record. SEA has teh 2nd best scorign D in teh NFL. 14.5 per. wow.

Donks @ Pats (7.5) 52.5
Den is 0-1 OTR, Pats 0-1 at home.....no matter who wins, the team with the aging Super Bowl QB gets to 3-2 and can say they're in the thick of it, but the team with the aging Super Bowl QB falls to 2-3. I'm gonna say Denver covers this one. That Pats have the highest scoring average (33.5) in the NFL and the Donks the 7th (28.5). So take teh over!

buff @ SFO (-8) 43
First off.....tough two week roader for Rough Buff: a 2652 mile flight for this game and next week, 2202 mile hop to the Six Oh Deuce. I think SFO houses this one. the Bills are 3rd in NFL for worst scoring defense (32.8 per) while SFO is 4nd best at 16.2, and SFO is relatively high in points scored, something like 10th from memory. Not a good matchup numberswise....so smoke a bowl of Humboldt County's Finest, put on some GD @ Fillmore West 3/1/69, crack open some Anchor Steam, make a clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, make some Rice-A-Roni (it is the San Francisco treat) blow that cute guy at the sports bar, take SFO screw the points.

Tenn @ Vikes (-5.5) 45
I'm not drinking the (purple) Kool Aid everyone else re vikes, but they are 3-1 and Tenn is baaaaaaaaaaaaad. Vikes outright. Over as well. They can score, Tenn can't stop a nosebleed.

Bolts @ NO (-3.5) 52.5
OK. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is NO favored? They do know San Dog is 3-1, right? and tehy know New "The Golden Sombrero" Orleans has not won a regular season NFL game in TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONE DAYS (Week 17, 1/1/12 beat Jax or Caro). wow. That said......NO going Operation Codename: Olympic Rings (think about it) would be a hoot. and I say it happens.....I'm tempted to pick NO to cover because that's a fun number but I think NO has given no reason to make us think otherwise. but hey, at least Brees' TD streak will be intact....rihgt?

MONDAY NIGHT:

Texans (-4.5) @ Jets 41

weird....no Redbirds today witht he thursday game.....can't recall the last time there was no Redbirds on Sunday. We had a couple of MNF appearances a few years ago but those were at the the start of the season so we still played Sunday.

not even sure who i'm getting today.

here we go:

10: Browns Gaints, Packers Colts (yay for PIP on the 46" flattie)
1: Rough Buff, SFO
and then we all get San Dog / Saints

the games kinda all suck on paper. and why am I gettting Browns and Giants? huh?

i got arizona right. mad taht we lost but we were due adn some bad habits caught up to us.

i have a hard time calling SD an upset. i know NO had the bye week to get right but.....i don't think that is really an upset. a 3-1 beating 0-4 would be an upset? huh?

2012-10-07 12:29:06 PM
I'm mad.

Mad like Bill Bixby got right before he morphed into a green Lou Ferrigno. Mad like Bryant McKinnie when they close the buffet. Mad like Anakin Skywalker right before he (dramatic pause) kills the younglings.

It has been brought to my attention that, despite my rather above-average season record of 38-24, my 9-6 record in week 4 was bested. By Merril. Farking. Hoge. Hoge went 14-1 last week. The only game he missed on was Giants-Eagles. Merril Hoge, the poster boy for repetitive concussion syndrome, the guy who had to relearn how to read after his retirement from the NFL (I'm not making this up). That Merril Hoge. It stops now. Winners in bold...and note that Merril Hoge was not bolded:

Miami Dolphins at Cincinnati Bengals:
One has to wonder about the mindset among Miami's roster, after having lost two straight overtime games in which they clearly had their chances to win. The Dolphins' 30th-ranked pass defense (they let Mark Sanchez throw for over 300 yards, for chrissakes) does not bode well against the Dalton & Green show, however, and Cincy knows that they have to keep piling up the "easy" wins in the first half of the season to counter a very rough second-half schedule.

Green Bay Packers at Indianapolis Colts:
You really have to feel for head coach Chuck Pagano, who is out indefinitely while undergoing treatment for leukemia. But even coming off a bye week and with Pagano roaming the sidelines the Colts would have been long shots...Green Bay comes in 2-2*, but with a pressure-oriented defense which will make life very rough for Andrew Luck, while Aaron Rodgers should be able to carve up Indy's secondary. Luckily for Indianapolis, they have a pretty good track record when earning a high draft pick after starting their #1 overall rookie QB in his first season.

Baltimore Ravens at Kansas City Chiefs:
The Chiefs' bread and butter on offense is the running game, and (surprise, surprise!) Baltimore has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher this season. Heck, they've only allowed one 90-yard rusher in their first four games, and that was in a 31-point rout of the Bengals. And while Kansas City ranks 12th in terms of yards allowed on pass D they're averaging 2.5 passing TDs surrendered per game, which plays directly into the Ravens' new pass-first offense. If Joe Flacco can avoid the turnovers and the Ravens can overcome their recent tendency to blow "easy" road games after big wins at home, this shouldn't be close.

Cleveland Browns at New York Giants:
Despite being 0-4, the Browns have yet to lose a game by more than 10 points and have only once lost by more than a single score. But Cleveland has not yet faced a quarterback of Eli Manning's level, either, yet still rank just 28th against the pass. Barring a monumental collapse I don't see how New York can lose this one.

Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers:
The Steelers have not lost coming off a bye week since Mike Tomlin's rookie season as head coach, back in 2007. Add to that the fact that Troy Polamalu and James Harrison will be back on defense and the battle of Pennsylvania comes down squarely in favor of Pittsburgh. Michael Vick will have to be near-perfect for the Eagles to pull this one off, and that's rarely a safe bet.

Atlanta Falcons at Washington Redskins:
Four games into the season and Robert Griffin III is still ranked 4th in QBR, which is nothing short of amazing in a rookie campaign. This week, though, he goes up against #1-ranked Matt Ryan and the explosive Atlanta Falcons' offense. With Washington putting the second-worst pass defense in the league on the field, this does not bode well for a rookie signal-caller who's trying to keep pace. Atlanta can be run against, but you can only hand the ball off for so long when your opponent can score at will on offense. Falcons in a blowout.

Seattle Seahawks at Carolina Panthers:
With the exception of a week two victory against the now 0-4 Saints, Cam Newton and his Panthers (if that's not a band name, what is?) have shown a remarkable ability to not make the plays that win ballgames. Seattle, meanwhile, played about as poorly as you can on offense and still came within one late-game drive of beating the Rams in St. Louis. The Seahawks still aren't going to make any jaws drop with the offensive play here, but the defense will be enough against a Carolina team which hasn't really responded well to pressure.

Chicago Bears at Jacksonville Jaguars:
The only team the Jaguars have outscored on the season are the Indianapolis Colts; the Colts have only played three games and the Jags have outscored them by one point. On the other side of the ball, Jacksonville has shown a frightening inability to stop both the run and the pass thus far, while Chicago's biggest defensive strength (the run) plays off perfectly against the Jaguars' only offensive asset. Even if Jay Cutler had his worst day as a pro (and remember who we're talking about here) the Bears would still struggle to lose this one.

Tennessee Titans at Minnesota Vikings:
Whether or not the Vikings are for real this season, they draw a Titans team which is surrendering nearly 38 points/game and scoring only 20 (and keep in mind that more than half of their scoring output came in that one OT game against Detroit). Look for yet another safe, workman-like game from the Minnesota offense and another solid victory.

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots:
The only true marquee matchup of week 5 gives us Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady in a bare-knuckled fight to the finish to decide which team leaves with a winning record. Well, all due respect to the Elder Manning, but Eric Decker is no Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas is no Brandon Lloyd, and Jacob Tamme is certainly not Rob Gronkowski. While I do think this one stays closer than last week's Pats game (I also think a football game between the Patriots and Colorado Rockies would stay closer than that), Brady's supporting cast makes the difference.

Buffalo Bills at San Francisco 49ers:
After their second-half implosion last week in Buffalo, there are two ways this team can react...oh, who am I kidding? It's the Bills, and their season is over. The biggest question in this game is whether Jim Harbaugh follows up his wildcat version of beating the Jets at their own game by instructing his defense to leave the field midway through the third quarter so he can do the same against Buffalo.

San Diego Chargers at New Orleans Saints:
Believe it or not, this is an upset pick with the opening line having New Orleans as 3.5-point favorites. All "Norv Turner" explanations aside, I don't understand that one...the Saints' biggest liability on defense is against the run, which plays into yet another game-manager style performance by Philip Rivers (which is what generally gives San Diego their best opportunity to win). And while the Chargers' pass D isn't among the league's elite, it should be enough to get stops when necessary against a Saints team which does not run the ball well (and San Diego is an elite run defense). I'm not even a betting man, but I'm still thinking of laying a few bucks down on the Chargers here.

Houston Texans at New York Jets:
With both Darelle Revis and Santonio Holmes out, a bad Jets team just got worse. Unfortunately for them, they are going up against a Texans' squad which has allowed the fewest points in the league and scored the second-most. Look for Timmysprinkles to get into the game under center by the fourth quarter.
