Ronnie Dobbs: the MUSICAL!

I saw him in concert a few years back at a tiny theater. He was incredibly grateful about the life he has, told fantastic stories, and the singing was amazing.

At the end of the show, for his encore, he came out and told a story about how even little children knew just who he was, and it amazed him. That the power of twelve little words would change his life so much. And then he recited the words, and the audience went nuts. It was a benefit for a local Jewish charity, so 80% of the audience was middle-aged Jewish women, and they screamed like school girls.

Probably one of the best shows I've seen.

Huh?

Mandy's famous for impetuously quitting TV shows, with little or no notice to the producers. some of them (Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds) have survived, while others (Dead Like Me) haven't. I didn't say he was a bad person, I just wish he wouldn't do it.

I was so excited to watch the movie when it came out, but couldn't believe how terrible it was. No Rube, fake Daisy, and a plot that didn't really do a good job following up on the actual series. It was just some standalone story that wasn't very interesting. Even Desmond from Lost couldn't save it.

I saw one of his shows here in Chicago some years back and it really is a damn fun show.

As for quitting shows, this quote from him about Criminal Minds (which, much as I love a good procedural, is a vile piece of exploitation) puts me on his side:

"The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do Criminal Minds in the first place," the actor told New York magazine. "I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."

I'm glad somebody from one of those shows finally said it.

I honestly can't understand the mass appeal of shows like Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, or 90% of movies on Lifetime. The real-world news is depressing enough most evenings. Why seek out entertainment that is nothing but rape and assault stories?

If we could get Joss Whedon to cast Mandy in a show for Fox, it would actually end up having a negative number of episodes. It might even create a black hole, sucking Fox TV into its singularity.

Add Bryan Fuller as a producer and I'm pretty sure you could get television sets to spontaneously implode during the pilot.

Every chance I get, which is often, I run up to Wallace Shawn and start to gush "Oh my god I can't believe it's you. Just say that one famous line from the movie....please!"

And he does.

"The world perishes not from bandits and fires, but from hatred, hostility, and all these petty squabbles."

After a picture with him I depart assuring "You were awesome in Uncle Vanya!"

I have probably done this 30 times over the years.

Great book, 'ok' movie (if somewhat mis-cast) with Crystal and Kane the weakest characters.

Never been able to figure out how Patinkin has been able to go from show to show to show over the years without being locked in to a 7 year contract.

Nice to read how grateful he is, too.

Maybe he thought there would be some bank robbers and gangster hitmen in it too. But no it mostly it was crazy pervert killer of white ladies.

First concert I ever went to, for my 15th birthday, was Mandy Patinkin at the McCallum Theatre. I had no idea he was a film actor until I was an adult; I had all his albums, and I knew he'd been Che in Evita, but I didn't see Princess Bride for the first time until I was 19. And I only watched it because of Mandy.

Heard this interview, interesting that the line in the movie that resonates most with him now is the young Mandy talking about what he's going to do for the rest of his life.
