Even if this is a repeat, it's a good story. Besides, not everyone reads every story on Fark everyday, so I think this whole repeat rule should be relaxed a bit. Within the same day, yeah, I can understand but a day or more later? Who is going to go paging through old posts that have rolled off the page already, and been closed to further comment?

And FTFA: "Republicans accused Democrat Colleen Lachowicz of living in a fantasy world and making "crude, vicious and violent comments" in online forums"

Coming from right wing fundy Republicans! The irony is too rich, I need a phlebotomy.

You'd be surprised. Don't make the mistake of thinking your elders weren't young once and didn't do all the things you do, or that they don't still do them. (i.e., yes your grandparents had wild monkey sex, and probably still do every now and then.)

Secondly, I'd actually expect republicans to be more pro-gaming than democrats. Several angles... gaming is all about personal empowerment, use of weapons, etc. Not that republicans are about those things necessarily, but as a group I think they come a lot closer than democrats.

My mom (who is from Norway and was raised Lutheran) did something similar with all of my music and black clothes (which was almost every bit of clothing I owned) when she got caught up in the "Satanic Panic". Now that I'm in my 40s she has finally figured out that I am basically the agnostic version of a Nordic type Heathen and couldn't care less about "Satan" other than the handiness of using the name as a metaphor. Only took her, what, almost three decades to figure it out?

I look forward to future debates that go like

"My opponent championed the changes to druid shapeshifting which took away their ability to successfully fight frost mages and claims this is balance. I ask you if it takes a priest with dispell and a druid to defeat a frost mage how can we call it balance? With such a shoddy understanding of fairness how can we expect my opponent to come up with a budget that doesn't harm vital services to low income families?"

"My opponent, who is a notorious player killer in Ultima Online, does himself little credit to speak of "fairness" when he ganks lowbie players and then laughs about it. Look at this screen shot of him gloating over aquaman who is in reality a 12 year old boy and was so upset he cried for nearly 30 minutes. The hypocrisy is simply astounding."

This "issue" isn't really a party issue but more of a generational one. You can score points with people who don't understand gaming. Those numbers will continue to drop and should be seen as a desperation move by the party playing the gamer card.

It's always kind of pathetic when small-town politicians try to go all Karl Rove in the local races. Pennsauken, NJ had a similarly banal incident after opponents of the mayor got a hold of something he said about a woman in tight pants. I think it was something as pathetic as "I wish I could look as good in those pants" because the dude was pushing 300+ lbs. They tried to turn it into this big sexual harassment thing and to this day they are just an anecdote repeated in a forum on the internet.

Uh...the mailing said: "We need a senator who lives in our world, not Colleen's world"

I'm not sure how that statement could be construed as anything BUT antagonizing and condescending to people who play video games.

And the big deal about a level 85 character is ...?

My main was 90 a week after MoP launched, and would have been sooner if the weekend hadn't been taken up by my birthday. I leveled my hunter to 85 practically by accident, without ever actually learning how to play a hunter (and I'm still not entirely sure why I did it; I still don't play him). Maxing a character is not some kind of big deal; this is "playing as expected" in Blizzard terms. :p

This reminds me of Mitt Romney apologizing to his constituents for inadvertently advertising on ... fanfiction.net. He sees people who write fanfic, all fanfic, as so fundamentally abhorrent that even showing them his ads requires an abject apology to the voters.

It's just trying to make something that is relatively popular into something weird. "She goes into a DIFFERENT WORLD called AZEROTH where she can KILL".

It's liked describing a football fan as someone who spends the weekend watching 22 young men, often dressed loosely as animals or racist caricatures smashing into each other, sweating, and patting each other on the ass. Some of these boys no older than 18!

Curious: why lie about a BJ?

If I'd farked up to that degree, the last thing I would have wanted to do is cause additional hurt to my wife.

/ Fark the GOP right up the ass, everybody's happy.

Zackly. I've been a PC gamer forever (hey, the C64 was a personal computer back in the 80s). The pretend aspect is fun, it's a stress reliever and sometimes it's just nice to deal with problems you CAN solve for a few hours. Especially if explosions are involved.

Oh, it's still D&D and LARPers and even the SCA from time to time, it's just now they have "super realistic" (um, no) video games to add to the list of things that are obvious signs your child worships teh debbil.

My father is an ultra-ultra Conservative (so much so that I joke that he makes Rush Limbaugh look like Maxine Waters) and was an old-school Southern Baptist Preacher for years.

He threw all of my AD&D books in the fireplace and said 'That's where you'll end up if you play "Satan's Game"'

That's really awful.

The only objection my parents had to AD&D was that it ate into time better spent studying & doing homework. Other than that, they had no interest or concern about it.

/ stopped playing in HS, when friends lost interest in it and I got an afterschool job...
// kinda sad, actually
/// I imagine WoW and other online games have pretty much killed D&D ( I saw what they did to the 4th ed. :-( )

you wouldn't know that by recent history.

and by recent history i mean anything after the attempt of impeach Clinton.

Which Bill Clinton wasen't doing anything nobody else in Congress wasen't doing. His only mistake was getting caught.

But it's funny, when it's about a Republican *cough* Mark Foley *cough* all of the sudden it's 'A private family matter'

i didn't and don't care at all what he was doing with "that woman" but it bothers me to this day that a sitting president would lie under oath.

Soo you have a problem with all of them then? Lies are officially and legally part of politics.

while that is the perception, and often the practice, it's not really legal.

true but he was under oath. and frankly given his history and that he was under oath in the paula jones mess hilary probably was already pissed and had been for some time. as for hurting her he really should have thought about that sooner.

the man was under oath.

did i mention a sitting president lied UNDER OATH !!!!

that nixon lied as LBJ did before him and reagan did later doesn't allow me to give clinton any slack.

About a matter that was not illegal, had nothing whatsoever to do with his ability to do his job, was noone's business except Mrs Clinton's (and arguably their kid), and should never have been asked. Let's keep some perspective here.

/ I wouldn't have cared if Bush and Cheney were getting it on, live on CSPAN.

I am an old Republican, who has played WOW for years, that is going go hide myself. This election, on both sides, is getting just too weird. Maybe an apocalypse is what is needed.

Several years before their demise, I worked at Circuit City for about a year, starting in November before The Madness. We had a PS2 and Grand Theft Auto III constantly going in the break room, and I recall once watching a relatively sweet female customer service rep gleefully get to five stars (via the usual fashion) and get shot down by the military. It was awesome.

You might want to check out Pathfinder. It's what D&D 4 should have been.
