Whoops. Wrong tab.

Eh, it probably still makes sense.

/The correct comment was supposed to be "Eh, the debate over Orcs is probably more intelligent than the usual political debate in this country."

Pretty sure we've got a repeat on our hands here, but I'm too lazy to look for the other one.

Please tell me you were looking for the Christina Hendricks tab and not the tab about the woman up for bestiality charges.

But really, is this the best the retard-icans can muster? OMG, she plays World of Warcraft! Get your torches and pitchforks!

Because there's are no more pressing concerns for the country than whether or not someone plays a videogame.

Dear flatlandahs,

This is a Maine State Senate race. Although the Maine U.S. Senate race does involve a dwarf, a troll, and an orc, there is nothing for you to see here. Move along.

Even if this is a repeat, it's a good story. Besides, not everyone reads every story on Fark everyday, so I think this whole repeat rule should be relaxed a bit. Within the same day, yeah, I can understand but a day or more later? Who is going to go paging through old posts that have rolled off the page already, and been closed to further comment?

And FTFA: "Republicans accused Democrat Colleen Lachowicz of living in a fantasy world and making "crude, vicious and violent comments" in online forums"

Coming from right wing fundy Republicans! The irony is too rich, I need a phlebotomy.

I was in Maine a couple of weeks ago, and missed out on this one. But I rarely watch local TV when I travel, beyond looking for weather (or traffic, if I am driving somewhere).

I think people who spend excessive amounts of time gaming are idiots, but I wouldn't vote Republican over it.

You'd be surprised. Don't make the mistake of thinking your elders weren't young once and didn't do all the things you do, or that they don't still do them. (i.e., yes your grandparents had wild monkey sex, and probably still do every now and then.)

Secondly, I'd actually expect republicans to be more pro-gaming than democrats. Several angles... gaming is all about personal empowerment, use of weapons, etc. Not that republicans are about those things necessarily, but as a group I think they come a lot closer than democrats.

And that's exactly how they'd be defending any Republican who was catching flack for doing what Lachowicz is doing. Their guiding behavioral principles tend to boil down to "Anything Dems do is bad, and anything we do is good," in case you haven't noticed.

My father is an ultra-ultra Conservative (so much so that I joke that he makes Rush Limbaugh look like Maxine Waters) and was an old-school Southern Baptist Preacher for years.

He threw all of my AD&D books in the fireplace and said 'That's where you'll end up if you play "Satan's Game"'

My mom (who is from Norway and was raised Lutheran) did something similar with all of my music and black clothes (which was almost every bit of clothing I owned) when she got caught up in the "Satanic Panic". Now that I'm in my 40s she has finally figured out that I am basically the agnostic version of a Nordic type Heathen and couldn't care less about "Satan" other than the handiness of using the name as a metaphor. Only took her, what, almost three decades to figure it out?

Hmm. It does raise an important issue though. Choice of hobby aside, if a farker were to run for an elected political position... imagine opposition getting hold of their fark posts. Some of the comments made by Lachowicz kind of resemble the type of comments posted on fark.

Let's say hypothetically I wanted to start getting into worshiping the Dark Lord, also known as The Adversary, Lucifer Lightbringer or Beelzebub, Lord of Flies. I want to feel his ominous and corrupting presence in the putrid pile of rotten filth and decay that is my life. So, would World of Warcraft be a good in here? Or should I start off with something slightly less daemonic like Kinect Dance Central?

I look forward to future debates that go like

"My opponent championed the changes to druid shapeshifting which took away their ability to successfully fight frost mages and claims this is balance. I ask you if it takes a priest with dispell and a druid to defeat a frost mage how can we call it balance? With such a shoddy understanding of fairness how can we expect my opponent to come up with a budget that doesn't harm vital services to low income families?"

"My opponent, who is a notorious player killer in Ultima Online, does himself little credit to speak of "fairness" when he ganks lowbie players and then laughs about it. Look at this screen shot of him gloating over aquaman who is in reality a 12 year old boy and was so upset he cried for nearly 30 minutes. The hypocrisy is simply astounding."

I feel bad for her opponent, apparently he's anti-mudslinging and this was done without his knowledge (has consistent spoken against attack ads prior to this campaign).

I'm really unhappy with the situation, because on a human level, it reinforces that there are farking idiots in position of power who make absolutely terrible decisions.

This "issue" isn't really a party issue but more of a generational one. You can score points with people who don't understand gaming. Those numbers will continue to drop and should be seen as a desperation move by the party playing the gamer card.

/oh and if it hasn't been mentioned this is a repeat, though I believe it was Politics tab so should it count?

It's always kind of pathetic when small-town politicians try to go all Karl Rove in the local races. Pennsauken, NJ had a similarly banal incident after opponents of the mayor got a hold of something he said about a woman in tight pants. I think it was something as pathetic as "I wish I could look as good in those pants" because the dude was pushing 300+ lbs. They tried to turn it into this big sexual harassment thing and to this day they are just an anecdote repeated in a forum on the internet.

"As far as we're concerned, it's not a 'World of Warcraft story,' it's a 'candidate saying outrageous things through World of Warcraft story,'" he said on Friday.

Uh...the mailing said: "We need a senator who lives in our world, not Colleen's world"

I'm not sure how that statement could be construed as anything BUT antagonizing and condescending to people who play video games.

What really happened was the GOP realized after the fact that potentially insulting 2/3 of the voter base wasn't a great strategy and they've now swung into damage control mode.

True. The Republican base is comprised of kids who don't know any different, or adults who refuse to grow up.
