The A's owner is refusing to pull the tarps from the upper deck in order to "preserve the intimacy". Dude is going to let 20K seats remain unsold. What an asshole.

Hard to imagine that As taking a game in Detroit against Verlander or Fister.

Which with the way this year is going, probably means they'll take both.

Pretty sure so he can claim the A's lack support in his bid to move the team.

Avocaods and THIS TRAIN appear far less frequently.

Baseball-Reference's twitter is saying that this is the shortest start in postseason history (by batters faced). Previously, the record was held by Curly Ogden who faced two batters in game 7 of the 1924 World Series. Apparently, the Senators started Ogden, a righty, so that the Giants would start a lefty-heavy lineup. He got the quick hook so that the Senators could get lefty George Mogridge in there against that lefty heavy lineup. This, by the way, ended up being the famous (or infamous) ball off the pebble game.

It looks like there have been 8 pitchers who failed to record a single out in a postseason start, the most recent being Al Leiter in game 6 of the 1999 NLCS

i'd guess it will depend if they can score this inning.

And Cain is officially out. Too bad. After that second homer, he was looking... not terrible. But I guess you have to raise the bar in the postseason.

Wise_Guy: How is a Detroit/ Oakland game an east coast thread?

For some folks in the City, the Bay Area ends at the bay.

/why would you ever want to go to Oakland? eewwwww!

machoprogrammer: The Bestest: Cueto hurt his back

With his retarded delivery, it was only a matter of time.

Yeah. I'll take his potato delivery if it means a 2.78 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 19-9 W-L record and 170 K's every year and it helps them get to the postseason. Word is he tweaked his back when he was warming up before the game. Aggravated it when Pagan called time during Cueto's windup and he didn't finish his delivery of the pitch. Bad luck. Not the end of the world. I think if the Reds were really worried about his delivery causing back problems, they never would have allowed him to change it. He's only been doing that the last couple of seasons.

Wise_Guy: drewogatory: The A's owner is refusing to pull the tarps from the upper deck in order to "preserve the intimacy". Dude is going to let 20K seats remain unsold. What an asshole.

How does an owner benefit from not selling seats? What am I missing?

I thought it had to do with the Raiders and the NFL.

ChrisDe: Scruffinator: ChrisDe: Hit & run, not really trying to steal the base.

I know, but with Young on 1st...

Yeah, it's a guarenteed out if the batter misses the pitch.

A little late here, but can anyone explain the point of the hit & run? Specifically, why the runner gets a worse jump an looks back?

Why not just have the runner go for a stolen base jump and if the hitter makes contact, hooray? Is the risk of lining into a double play or popping out without the runner having time to get back actually higher than the risk of the hitter not making contact?

I like the Oakland and Berkeley area but I wouldn't live there. That said I wouldn't want to live in SF either and I really like the City as well. The only city I don't like is Santa Cruz, those people are assholes.

I love how the TBS announcers have apparently never seen BP hit. He always taps his helmet as he leaves the batter's box. And this game is now over.

Which he doesn't have tonight. At mid-season, watching him breathe fire at 102-3 and then drop a 90mph slider is just unreal

If the manager is competent, he would only hit and run with a batter that is reasonably good at making contact, so the risk of a swing and miss should be kinda low and the batter SHOULD put the ball in play. The runner knows this, so he looks back mainly to see where the ball is.

If there is a pop fly to the right side, the SS could easily still cover the bag and act as if he is either getting a throw from the catcher or getting a throw from another infielder in an attempt to start a DP. Every so often over the course of the season, you do see a play where an alert defender bluffs a base runner into thinking that the ball is in one place while it is actually somewhere else. If the runner didn't look back on the hit and run, it would happen far more often.

As for the jump, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure that the runner just wants to avoid a PO/CS. It's the batter's job to put the ball in play, so a straight CS is largely on him, not the runner. The point of running there isn't to take second, it's to avoid a double play, open up a hole, and get a running jump - so a great jump isn't particularly necessary.

Sure, but (to continue this thread that no one's reading) there still IS a risk of a CS, even if it's the hitter's fault. I get the point of a hit and run when it works, avoiding the DP and opening up a hole for the hitter to hit through, but, it still doesn't seem to outweigh the risks compared to a run and hit (for lack of a better phrase).

Good explanation I heard is that on a hit and run, the guy isn't sliding into 2nd, so he can go 1st to 3rd easily. Makes some sense. Still, bah.
