Unless you take pictures, use maps, don't have 4G Wireless coverage, or would rather blow $200 to get a decent amount of storage for your music and media on your phone.

Romero's headline was better than subby's.

We need a Romero tag for the real Romero stories. That said, massive respect from me to the guy. He took all our teasing in good stride. Good on him.

His alter-ego is Captain Obvious.

I really hope Apple offers multiple screen sizes next year. If it gets any bigger, I'm going to look for other options.

Not hate, just tired of the fanbois making it the one smartphone to compare everything else too, the whiny fanboys biatching about scratches and expected religious experiences from a consumer good, and it just being overhyped.

/It is good at what it does, people just need to take it down a notch. It seems like they finally are since Jobs has been dead for a year..

iPhone 5 on the left, iPhone 4 on the right.

Also, I think TFA is a bit unfair because they are comparing one specific phone to dozens of other phones ("Android phones") of different quality. It's easy to find an Android phone that is better (or worse) than the new iPhone in some very specific aspect.

Finally, there's something complicated enough yet inexpensive enough for really poor people to argue about. Used to be you had to have at least a grand in the game to get in on the Ford/Chevy debate.

I must say, I've tried to replicate that issue repeatedly with my phone and have yet to see a problem.

The iPhone 4 is better than the iPhone 4 if you tell a person it's an iPhone 5.

I don't think the problems (most of them) are generation related, but rather os related. I absolutely loathe apple's new software. Worst offender for me: podcast app. Why fix something that ain't broken.

Imagine a world... where Apple spent even $1 on their own marketting?

Instead of then worldm I live in, where every news source on the planet free their top/front page whenever Apple releases a new product... or even just NEWS of a possible new product. It's pathetic.

Typing this comment with old and busted iPhone 4S on Verizon's 3G net.
It still works, as my gps/camera/stereo/... It's just a pocket computer that works well. That is all.

I was going to keep my 4 as an iPod touch type deal until I found out I could sell it (in partially busted form) for $150

The wife and I got 3GS'es when we signed up for AT&T 2+ years ago. Then came renew/upgrade time. We upgraded both lines to 8GB 4's (not 4S's) for $100 a pop. Then I turned around and sold the two 3GS's on eBay for $165 each.

I work for ATT, and let me tell you the biggest complaints by far is the battery life not being what it is claimed.

And IOS6 upgrades causing older models to go tits up.

And a $250 Canon or Nikon point-and-shoot camera will outperform either.

My android is good enough to take quick snapshots of my kids doing cute shiat that I can send to their grandparents, or for photographing the whiteboard during a meeting, or for sending WIE.

For anything else, I'll use a real camera.

As will a 12 megapixel 70 dollar Fuji, Nikon, etc point and shoot.

Perhaps you can answer a question, then. All the betas of IOS6 I saw had were advertising Wireless Emergency Alerts/CMAS alerts/Government alerts, but my AT&T 4 running 6.0 has no such options. Are they just hidden or are they not active in this release?

2012-10-06 05:43:48 PM
The only problem is that it is not. Its different but not really better. Can I make calls on it? Sure. Ok, it serves its function. Can I make calls on an I phone 1? Yes. Hmm. No difference.

I make it a point not to buy the new iProduct until it's had time for initial problems stemming from overworked slaves to be fixed.

If my current iProduct batter holds out for another nine months I bet I can go straight to the 5s.

My 3Gs has survived the IOS6 upgrade without too much difficulty. I'm planning on getting the 5 this weekend if I can find one, but I'm in no big hurry so if I can't oh well, I'm sure I'll be able to eventually. My 3gs is in almost perfect shape, so I image I can probably get about $100 or so for it on craigslist.

I want to get the iPhone5 simply because the most apps that I find important are available. I really want a Nokia Lumia 920 when it comes out, but currently there are so many key apps missing. Several big ones are rumored, but not available yet.

Most of my family has Samsung (Galaxy Nexus and S2) phones and we love them. My boys just got iPhone 4s's for their b'days. (I know, but they were $50 each and I actually save money by putting them on my data plan over their messaging plan)
I like the 4s. The 5's screen is long and narrow. I don't like it.

The best camera is the one you have with you. If something unexpected happens when you are somewhere the camera on an iPhone, or my HTC, is far far better than the Canon/Pentax/Nikon/Hasselblad that is sitting at home in a drawer.
If you know you will be wanting to take some photos then bring a camera. But lots of people will have their smartphone with them 24/7.

Actually if you are taking pictures of people that's not the best place. It can make your subjects squint and look terrible.

I find it interesting that the main arguments and comparisons have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with how well they perform... as a phone.

Fact: Consumer Reports is about the worst possible, least-knowledgeable source of reviews on any product line.

Nobody has a $200 smartphone. They have a 500 dollar smartphone they're paying $200 for because they're also overpaying for a multiple year contract that will cost them far more than the $300 they saved on actually paying for the phone.

Or they pay for their phone and go contract-free, if they're sensible.

In July August September, 14 out of 14 people told me "Don't buy the i5 when it comes out. Buy the Galaxy S3 instead." So i did. Now i don't have purple pictures or Apple Maps.
