Leader O'Cola: replace
Groundhog Day, Sixth Sense, Boyz in the Hood, Jurassic Park, Speed, Trainspotting, Truman Show, Heat with some of those.
jeez.

Don't get to replace this. Still holds up visually for the most part. Kids are worthless but the move still stands tall, especially the first time people see the Brachiosaurus scene.

/the stomp scene in the beginning, not the booger scene thrown in for the dipshiat kids holding Grant back from being awesome.

Seven was a horrible movie. I'd rather see Clueless on the list than Seven.

FeedTheCollapse: rocky_howard: No. Shut up. T2 was the pinnacle of the scifi action movie. And you actually FELT something. Jesus, a scifi action movie where you actually feel emotion. That's just a tremendous feat.

Terminator 2 was awesome when I was 10, but rewatching it fairly recently, it felt way overly long and Edward Furlong came off as Scrappy Doo-esque. The special effects and action still stand up well, but I don't like the plot nearly as much as the first film's.

I've also come to the conclusion that James Cameron is pretty much a talented version of Michael Bay. I mean, the kind of movies they make aren't really that much different, but Cameron at least comes off as someone who gives a shiat about the movie he's making rather than knowingly catering his films to mouthbreathers.

Excluding Avatar, I suppose.

People really don't like The Truman Show?

/Replace Speed with Dark City and I would call that a solid list.

I see your point. Still, meh. From Dusk 'till Dawn generated as much emotion, IMHO. Neither is a 'great' movie. Entertaining, yes. Great, no, I don't think so.

I still wouldn't say one does the other better as they're otherwise completely different films. It's not a "Deep Impact vs. Armageddon" type scenario.

Darbus: Excluding Avatar, I suppose.

I never had an interest in watching that as it did look Bay-esque. But even then, I'm under the impression that Avatar's 3D was there from its inception while Bay would probably just slap it on in post-production.

I can't even convince my wife to watch it - she hates Jim Carrey. I think it's one of his best movies, he doesn't go overboard like in everything else.

What's with all the hate for Speed? Sure, it hasn't aged all that well, but when it came out it was the perfect, well-paced action movie that didn't get too busy with too many cut scenes or anything. Fark you guys, this one should stay on the list.

That's not what I was getting at. BJM was just an example of a film in the same genre, with a similar theme, that I consider to be better than The Truman Show.

2012-10-06 11:27:22 AM
Pretty good list. Though Unforgiven and Natural Born Killers should be on there, and Forrest Gump maybe. Take Heat and Speed off. Heat is one of the most overrated movies of all time. Almost as much as Tombstone.

it's rather sad how many people will dismiss Carey's more dramatic movies because of his shiatty comedies. With the exception of The Number 23, his dramatic films are generally great.

Mask of Zorro is damn near perfect for an adventure. CZJ is unquenchably hot, Antonio Banderas played a great rise to hero, and Hopkins was a great old master. Great stunts and sword fighting. Granted, it nearly had a Luthor villain plot.

I liked most of the movies you listed, but I also liked most of the movies you want to replace them with.

American Beauty was sh*t, as was Life is Beautiful, and the English Patient. Despite your obvious hard on for Anderson, Magnolia was an actor's' workshop and Boogie Nights was thoroughly entertaining, though I wouldn't replace Trainspotting with it.

I'm surprised that they overlooked True Romance on the list.

I didn't dislike Fight Club so much as I thought its fanboys were generally kind of annoying, especially the knuckledraggers who seem to miss the point of the story. That said, I enjoy reading Palahniuk, but he has a knack for writing stories where I'm not entirely sure if they're suppose to be taken at face value or as some kind of larger commentary.

Gunny Highway: A Few Good Men

"The military are scummy rednecks, and all that can beat an experienced, hardened colonel is a young, liberal, middle-class hot shot lawyer who has realised that they're dumb enough to just admit their guilt in a courtroom". It's a typical hacky Sorkin ass-pull, because the guy can't write 3rd acts.

Here's where I get to do my CSB. Franka Potente was an exchange student at my high school during my senior year. Having been in German IV, it was expected that I get to know her, show her around, whatever. She was pretty cool, but it was long ago.

Fight Club was a love story. The people who hate it, or love it too much, usually don't realize that (which was the joke). As far as film goes, I don't see any downside. It was well written, well designed, and well acted, and it improved on the book while staying true to it. I don't think one can ask much more of a film adaptation.

Gunny Highway: People don't like Truman Show? I love that movie.

It's not that I don't like it, it's just that there were far better movies made.

Like this.

My personal omissions, based on the fact that I never get tired of watching them:

Swingers
Rounders
A Few Good Men
Primal Fear

And Starship Troopers is a movie that I will always sit and watch. Well done film.

2012-10-06 12:35:51 PM

T-Servo: Pocket Ninja: That's actually not a bad list. I think I agree that Shakespeare in Love belongs on it

I could never stand that movie, especially in contrast to Elizabeth. If it was put across as a comedy it would be ok, but probably even then not as good as Grosse Pointe Blank.

And what is the Truman Show doing on the list?

THANK YOU!

Paid in Full

I'm sure there were plenty of movies that were left off that list which shouldn't have been, but I think we can all agree the ones they've picked deserve to be there. Except Speed. Seriously? That had to be a joke, though there would have been funnier choices for the gotcha choice.

Have you watched her in "Copper" this season? It's about as dark & twisted as can be and my wife refuses to watch it anymore, but I've been hooked.

Speed's a really good action thriller. It's not like Point Break, which changed how action movies looked, but it is really good.
