Judging from those first two photos his new diet hasn't helped with his blurriness problem.

Summary: He stopped eating shiat and started exercising. I didn't see it in the story, but I assume portion control is in there too.

My only nourishment consists of food that is white: eggs, sugar, grated bones, the fat of dead animals, veal, salt, coco-nuts, chicken cooked in white water, fruit-mould, rice, turnips, camphorised sausages, pastry, cheese (white varieties), cotton salad, and certain kinds of fish (without their skin). I boil my wine and drink it cold mixed with the juice of the Fuschia. I am a hearty eater, but never speak while eating, for fear of strangling.

But seriously, how is losing weight by exercising more and eating less a news story?

You don't really need portion control if you eat good foods and exercise. Your body's self limiting. No one gets fat on veggies. Other sentence.

Because a very large percentage of the population is seemingly unaware of it, unless my eyes deceive me.

What an incredibly handsome man. Before and after. I'm glad for his health he lost some weight, I just hope that it was for his health and his own happiness he lost it not because he perceived his weight to be 'unattractive'.
Fat guys are awesome.

But yeah, logic dictates that if you cut out unhealthy food, chances are you're going to lose a little weight. :O

one man dropped a third of his body weight by cutting out 'white food'

I made my own meals and went and bought my own food, like grilled chicken and fish

Did he dye his chicken and fish a different colour, or is the Fail's headline inaccurate as usual?

It's the "slow carb" diet. Read Four-Hour Body

2012-10-06 06:56:11 AM
Ugh. I never really understand all these really esoteric diets. The no-carb diet! The no-white diet! The low-protein diet!

Dieting is an equation. If your intake is larger than what you burn daily you won't lose weight. It's really not that complicated. That might not make it easier but it's really not hard to grasp.

100 pounds in four months means something else was happening -- and it wasn't exercise.
that is too fast of a weight loss, unless he had surgery and/or a liquid diet under a physician's care.
half the time, now a days, there's surgery involved, but you don't find that out until the bottom
of the story, or the follow up.

I think the 'white part' isn't necessarily about the actual color of the food, but about processing or how the body processes it. White rice as opposed to brown rice. White bread as opposed to whole-grain bread.

(Well, there's no equivalent for potatoes, but they're 'white' and mostly starch, which gets converted to sugar by the body.)

Grilled chicken and fish don't count as 'white foods' for that purpose. Though, yes, grilled chicken is white when cooked. And many fish are white in color.

The last line of TFA leads me to believe he has a better chance than most.

'It's not a diet, but it's more of a lifestyle change,' he said. 'My body is used to eating healthy so I choose healthy choices.'

2012-10-06 07:10:41 AM
Good for him - but most people who drop that much weight in such a short time don't keep it off in the long term. On the other hand, most of his dietary changes are quite sensible, so if he's feeling good about himself, he might buck the odds. I wish him all the best.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry, and that's extra scary to me. There's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside. Run, he's fuzzy, get out of here.

This. It's over 6 pounds a week for a sustained period. And he supposedly did it not by choosing healthy foods but arbitrarily eliminating foods that just LOOK a certain way. Not only that, but the article specifically states he eats chicken and fish - both of which are white. Oh, but he grills the chicken, so it isn't white anymore. It's also unhealthy that way.
Of course, it's the Daily Fail, so it's shiat they just totally made up.

No. I lost 40 pounds in 2 months doing something very similar. No surgery, No starving myself. I've since decided that starches and carbohydrates (especially sugar) are simply not meant to be a large part of the human diet. I've cut out rice, potatoes, starchy vegetables, sugar, and breads. I take in 2500 calories a day of fat, protein, and "good carbs" (leafy veggies, avocado, etc.). My blood work is normal across the board and I've never felt healthier.

I think we're on to something.

Yes but a small out-of-focus monster is significantly less scary. Come to think of it, is there any chance we could breed that quality into the general population? Think of the limitless possibilities for criminal endeavors. My own personal army of blurry midget (bank) robbers.

FTFY. There is a difference. It's still better than many other things. Going to extremes is what makes most diets unsustainable.

I'm on a budget right now. I can't afford much else except for 'white foods'.

I could kill for a nice steak, a big bowl of Chinese style coleslaw, and a bowl of Bartlett pears.

Well, it's not quite so simple. Processed foods are digested faster, for one thing, which means you're hungry again sooner. Part of dieting is mental, if you eat foods that make you feel hungry you will eat more. Oatmeal and twinkees react very differently in the body.

Actually, ironically, there are sweet potatoes, which are not only more nutritious than standard Idaho taters, but are supposed to metabolize more slowly.

I lost 100 lbs in about 7 months last year without killing myself, so I can believe it. Just stop eating like every day is your last day to ever eat and move a little bit. Then move a little more as you keep going. Last 60 has been killing me though.

While I disagree with switching to non-white grains, kudos to this guy and finding what worked for him. Hopefully he can keep it off.

I've lost almost as much in 10 months using this philosophy.

Bullshiat flag!

100 pounds in 122 days is about 2,900 calorie deficit every day, which isnt much below your daily nutritional needs anyway. So is this guy claiming he only consumed a couple hundred calories per day and didn't die or have some severe health problems as a result?

Surgery, a lot longer time period, or two different people.

Congrats man.

I lost 50lbs in two months. Three factors, 1) stopped eating fast food and made a decent effort to reduce carbs 2) stopped drinking Dr. Pepper, 3) the "Divorce Diet Plan" really works if life stresses you out to where you don't much feel like eating.

2012-10-06 08:27:23 AM
Gary Taubes talks about this in several books (see amazon.com, easy to find). I didn't read TFA, however most of the time people are talking about white sugar, white flour, white rice, etc. It can be easy to replace some of those things but not others if you are not used to it (I still love chocolate but can easily live without white rice. ick). And as far as white potatoes, there are always sweet potatoes or yams. They are supposedly more nutrient dense and digest slower than regular russet potatoes.

Basically this... my boss started doing CrossFit and eating better and went from 350 lbs to 220 in about 8 months. He's done 2 sprint triathlons in the last 2 months.

As much as people say "I can't do this" and "my bodyshape won't get better".... for 99% of the people, if you do the right things, you can lose weight and be fairly close to a "normal" weight.

100 lbs. in 4 months seems pretty close to impossible. I can see losing at a very high pace at the start, but as you start to slim down the pace will slow even as you trim back on calories.

Still, as long as he maintains he'll be better for it.

Gah. I *so* need to lose weight. A lot of it. A huge part of my problem is willpower. As in I have none.
Add that to the fact that my husband and kids DON'T need to lose weight and don't stop buying all
the stuff that I crave.

Sigh...

2012-10-06 09:06:22 AM
A person who can lose 100 pounds in months was so fat and out of shape that I'm not interested in hearing any of his diet tips. Your newest fad is no more interesting than the habits that got you in that shape in the first place.

'Being the holidays, right around Christmas, I made my own meals and went and bought my own food, like grilled chicken and fish, so my family would have their food and I had my food.'

Both white foods.

It sounds like this guy did the one thing that leads to guaranteed weight loss:

He stopped making excuses.
