Weird. I don't think I've ever had one. Never broken any bones, either. Worst injury I ever had was a stretched ligament in my ankle from missing a step on some stairs. Though I did spend weeks in a cast and the doctor said I would have actually been better off with a break.

Vial said she is worried the practice of touching up the photos will run counter to campaigns aimed at improving the self-image of children and keeping them from being influenced by stereotypical beauty ideals.

Oh, Jeebus Christmas... For f*ck's sake... She was "shocked" by this? Shocked? Seriously?

Sounds like someone's either (1) wrapped a little too tight, or (2) an attention whore.

As for retouching the photos... So what, as long as it doesn't ruin the picture. When her kids hit puberty and go through that awkward not-so-attractive phase she'll be begging to have the studio retouch those photos.

Back in the late 90s I had to grab head shots off of tape to put into our still store. Our Pinnacle had a program that was very much like Photoshop 1.0... so I would go in all the time and fix things. Just made for a better presentation.

I can understand the outrage if the school retouched the pics without permission or notifying the parents/students. It'd still be stupid, but I get it. But here the school is offering--as in giving the option to--retouch pics. Why get outraged over an option you're not forced to take?

Only retouched pictured we had were senior year where lots of idiots would pay hundreds of dollars for what seemed to me to be lots of blurry lines (supposed to be "soft" but always seemed just blurry to me).

But I graduated in 94. All of my yearbook pictures were done with film rather than digital cameras. I know for a fact that our yearbook crew in high school didn't even have a digital camera or access to a computer with photo software. I'm guessing the mother in TFA is reacting because she doesn't know how easy and common it is today to do this and she feels it violates her future memories of her kids when they were in school. To her, those memories (the pictures) will forever be seen through someone else's filter of who her child should have been that day.

I actually agree with the idea of leaving the photos the way they are. We see it as a little touching up, but in truth it's evidence of a deeper problem with society. People shouldn't be made to feel weird if they have zits, a cold sore, or any other physical thing that would be considered a "problem." These things aren't problems, they're just a part of life. Companies have built up an industry around making people feel like crap for having them so they can make money. "OMG I HAVE A ZIT MY LIFE IS OVER," is only something that has come about recently. Where did this idea that a couple zits made someone hideous come from?

The photographers aren't the problem,.they're just a symptom.

I'm not "outraged", but I think it's pretty stupid on the part of the photo studio. It's not their business to judge what's "attractive" and what's not. Besides, do you really want your kids not to look like they actually do by taking away unique physical traits?

Oh, and this is the first year I've seen this as an option for my stepsons who are in 10th and 11th grades...

Really? I'm 29 and went to school in a fairly affluent area and this was never an option. I only heard about it recently from a co-worker.

On one hand I can see the bonus of being able to fix a stray hair or remove that obscene zit. On the other hand I think it takes away from the whole experience of having a crappy picture and kind of romanticizes the memory of middle/high school.

Although if this can be retroactively applied there's a couple years where I need my fashion sense tweaked. Sweater vest? Giant bow? C'mon kid!

What the... My son has acne. Has had it for years. Proactive helps but not all the time on every pimple. I always check the box for retouching for his school pictures. It doesn't change who he it, it actually lets us see the "true" him. I think the cold has gotten to some people.

The photo studio only offers this service, they don't do it on their own. Presumably, they don't fix things the photo subject doesn't want fixed, only the stuff they do want fixed. So what.

People make themselves look better all the time before the shutter snaps. Different glasses, contacts, colored contacts, makeup, hair styling, clothes, braces to fix teeth, plastic surgery, hair coloring, whatever. Why is fixing the image after the shutter snaps objectionable, but spending 2 years with braces on your teeth or 5000 bucks for bigger tits, or 20 bucks for blonder hair not objectionable? I can't find the Chris Rock video, but "You don't look like that!"

I worked in a photography studio for many years. A coworker of mine found this one little old lady to be quite amusing looking, so for a while, I'd paste her face, tiny and transparent, into many different people's photos. One time I went wayyyy too far and pasted it on the black spot of a pet dalmation, and it was glaringly obvious. I thought for sure the client was going to come back pissed off, but they didn't. Ahhh tiny grandma face....She lives on the wall of about 30 different people.

No, the place that did my kids' pics offered an all-or-nothing package. They would never be able to customize this for hundreds of students at multiple schools. Photoshop isn't the magic bullet everyone thinks it is. Time stil applies.

In 1996 they were offering photo-touch ups for our Grade 12 Grad photos. It was expensive as all hell back then likely due to them still using film, and only a handful of wealthy parents of kids with bad acne took them up on it.
