Most whistle-blowers are malcontents with an axe to grind. The issue that's being exposed may be valid, but the motivation of the whistle-blower himself is to cause disruption and basically piss in everyone's Cheerios.

This is why whistle-blowers get treated like coonts - they generally are.

When your tourist trap monument costs millions upon millions to make and upkeep, more then any other national landmark in the country, it does not behoove you to have people running around pointing out serious engineering flaws in it's construction, that would cost millions and millions more to repair.

Additionally, there are standards for how large openings should be in relation to the number of anticipated occupants, limits on occupants, and exit routes that are part of standard architectural design. Zoning laws, fire safety laws, etc. are all generally enforced during any new construction. Is this guy suggesting that this didn't occur or is he suggesting that he knows better than the law?

This reminds me of some stories I've heard about Microsoft. Dissenting opinion/new idea/not doing exactly what you're told? Demoted, reassigned, or fired. Come to think of it, that seems to be the way most large American companies are managed.

This is not standard architecture. I cannot imagine that the original design included armed guards and metal detectors as well as a security perimeter.

It's easy to test the water for disease, but what if the design itself is prone to causing it? Then you have to re design the entire system. It could run millions of dollars.

Yea, I could agree on a little weapons check before you go into the museum. But when I visited last year I had to go thru airport check pat down security just to get into the area where the pools are. Overkill.

Having known many Microsoft insiders, I doubt that severely. At least in their heyday, dissent was not only encouraged but expected.

Many times, though, the loudest and most opinionated people are also the least productive or useful. I think it's a reaction to knowing you're not good at your job - some people realize they need to change, and they do. Others try to shift all blame to others for their own poor performance, and they get a million and one gripes to air at the company, their coworkers, etc. I see it in people I fire - no, I didn't fire you for speaking truth to power, I fired you for getting less than half of the work done of your peers, and doing it so badly that you actually accomplished negative work, because everyone else had to work harder to re-do the work you did.

When someone like that gets fired, the sense of victimhood certainly doesn't end - and they are the only ones who are allowed to tell their side of the story.

Never forget the fundamental rules of the American workplace: Shut up and do as you're told. Keep your head down and make the numbers look good. Miss those, and it won't matter how many lives you save.

There are Grief-Junkies out there who don't want to fix what caused their grief, don't really want to comfort other grievers, just want to wallow in their grief as a sort of "oh, God, woe is me, pay attention to my grief" kind of thing. My friend's mom is a grief-junkie - she showed up after a mutual friend died in a car wreck with a casserole. Cool, thanks. The next day, another casserole, cool thanks... The next day, another casserole - "hey thanks, but leave us to grieve." The next day, another casserole: "look, stop this nonsense". And yup, another day of casserole met with "Hey, give it a rest, go home and leave us the fark alone." She never did understand what problem they had with her: "They're finally getting over it (after 5 days) because they're angry with the world. I helped."
