Nor were they either clothing or indeed inexplicable given one of the first scenes in the film and even TFA calls them "thermal bandages".

So other than it's io9 and thus shiatty articles layered ontop of the worlds worst layout, why is she in the list? The outfit isn't inexplicable... or does Gawker not know what the word means?

enderthexenocide: in many novels, science fiction and otherwise, they don't even mention half the time what the characters are wearing because it isn't important. for all you know, the characters in classic sci-fi novels are all walking around naked.

In the 'John Carter, Warlord of Mars' series, they ARE walking around naked all the time!

They counted Catwoman, so why not. Especially since Mystique wasn't nude in the comic book...rare time that a movie has made a comic book costume *more* revealing.

Oh for god's sake, that costume is COMPLETELY INEXPLICABLE.

Just because the movie makes some ridiculous excuse for her wearing that the entire time, doesn't mean it isn't inexplicable. Having a silly explanation doesn't count as an explanation.

They wanted her wearing a skimpy costume and they made it happen. God bless them. But don't pretend there's a legitimate reason behind it.

whatshisname: I remember when science fiction actually required some imagination and thought. People like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Larry Niven wrote really interesting books about it.

When did science fiction become comic books, bad mythology and horror movies?

Have you seen the old sci-fi pulp magazines?

My father took our family to the Winchester Drive-In to see Wizards and Phantom of The Paradise when we were kids. My mom was so pissed after that.

Damn, there hasn't been a Winchester Drive-In for years. There's a small park surrounded by an office park now.

The Capitol Drive-In is still going strong, though. Just a few miles down the road.

Capitol Drive-In will always be epic to me for how many times i got laid there. It's sleazy as hell, but you can bet half the cars there weren't watching the movie.

Yes, Capitol Drive-In in a Volkswagen squareback. Reverse into the spot, flip the backseat down and the back becomes flat like a bed, maybe even watch a movie. I almost saw "The People Under the Stairs".

That's because in the comic book they didn't have to change her appearance in real time. Readers just took it for granted that her clothing would change when she changed... but in the real world she would have to be naked, as her flesh and skin itself would mold to the shape of the person she wanted to replicate, clothing included.

She had to be naked. And I for one appreciate that.

From the comments below the article, written by the author:

BTW there is no Slave Leia because she's wearing a slave outfit, therefore it is not inexplicable. Just FYI.

Yes, "sci-fi" is often used as shorthand for "all genre fiction". Are there really people who haven't figured that out yet?

And 300 is definitely genre fiction. It bears as much resemblance to the historical battle of Thermoplyae as Hogan's Heroes does to WWII.

No--the article was specifically about "inexplicably" tiny outfits. There's a good reason for Leia to be wearing something skimpy and attractive there.

Yes, because eye candy.

Only fark can rationalize that Leia wore a slave outfit because you know, that's what slaves wear, right? If sticking a princess in a bikini is how you are supposed to humiliate them, best not tell that to the real life princesses, they seem to have a fancy for the things. By the rational that he was trying to humiliate her because you know, those sorts of clothes aren't proper for princesses, he could have put her in a burlap sack. Lets not play like idiots here and continue on with the explanation that metal bikinis are standard issue humiliation suits, so clearly it's obvious that she had to be wearing one... There's a very good reason why George Lucas put her in a tiny outfit and not a burlap sack

I don't think the reason is solely because Jabba wants to humiliate Leia. Judging by his other slaves, Jabba has a thing for humanoid chicks, so he probably got his jollies off of it too.

I dated a Polish girl once whose family was descended from royalty. When she got her ears pierced, her father freaked out because, back when their family still had power, earrings were how they identified their servants and slaves. No one in power had pierced ears. To do so would have been beyond humiliating to them and the family. Why, it's almost as if different cultures (even imaginary ones) might have different ideas of what is humiliating, degrading, or otherwise shameful. But, hey, let's not let rational thought get in the way of you being bitachy about Fark and Star Wars.

Every shiatty romance novel involving slavery, EVER, would like a word with you about who can rationalize what.

I'm pretty sure Leia had to endure more than his oogling, and that there is some drawings, animations, and stories with wildly varied anatomical renditions and reactions to the applications of such...

I will research on this, if any wish to assist me in collecting data, you may contact me via EIP.

/you could probably include the entire female cast for Mass Effect after the first game.

Miranda and Liara had skimpy outfits? I mean I'll admit they were form fitting, but hardly tiny.

At any rate, they were two sizes too small.
