I like how they waited till the last bit to mention that she'd been warned by officials about importing AND THEN SELLING the moss balls, but kept doing it anyway.

To hell with her.

I for one don't have a problem with this. Invasive species are a menace, and once established they are almost impossible to get rid of. Here in the US, just a few have become major problems: Argentine and red imported fire ants, Quagga mussels, "killer" bees, and tamarisk (which squander water supplies in arid areas.) "Garden" snails were introduced by people importing them to cultivate escargot. There are many more that I can't think of right now.

She was warned, too, and kept selling the stuff before they nailed her. Hopefully a lesson was learned.

Don't forget the Snakehead fish that has walked out of your nightmares and invaded the US. It can walk, breath on land and even climb trees.

DiscoDJ: Another Government Employee: Florida understands (Google Eledia).

OK. I fell for it. I googled it. Even added "Florida" when the first result turned up bupkis. Still bupkis.
Great post there, Lou.

Spelled it wrong. Elodea, also known was Hydrilla. Can take over a sinkhole lake in two weeks.

roc6783: tricycleracer: I had a friend in med school down at NSU who would buy illegal coral in Miami. He says it had about the same feel as buying drugs.

Why would you buy illegal coral? Not snark, it just seems really stupid when you can get it from places that legally produce it.

Also, I tried to figure out if gobies in Lake Michigan are invasive or not. Turns out it is a firm "Maybe". Bigger fish eat them, but the gobies target the eggs of larger fish, so they are a problem, but not out of control yet. Weird lookin suckers though, remind me of the mudskipper from Ren and Stimpy.

I've not heard of these. I live in Wisconsin, and all we hear about are zebra mussels and asian carp. Maybe those 2 are bigger concerns than gobies?

I've been in on buying some possably less than legally imported reptiles, and yes, it has the feel of buying drugs.

I had a friend who went to med school... I didn't go to med school. Just want to clarify.

destrip: I just remembered another biggie: the tui chub, an invasive fish species that is so damaging to the lakes it infests that the only viable option to get rid of it is to poison THE ENTIRE LAKE. This was famously done in Diamond Lake in Oregon.

Add Asian carp to that list.
