The weirdest thing about this being the highlight is that cutting subsidies to television programs is like the one thing Romney said in the debate that I just disagree with, rather than feeling that it's quantitatively a bad idea in every way possible or a blatant lie about something factual or his policy plan.

So... go figure, it's the one that had legs.

Last I heard, a majority of Americans think the Corporation for Public Broadcasting made up between 1% and 5% of the US budget (which it doesn't), and still nearly 70% of the country says that we either spend the right amount or not enough on public media. It's crazy that these are the windmills Republicans decide to fight.

I don't know if I am giving him or his handlers too much credit here, but it is actually pretty brilliant, in an evil way to do that to Lehrer and PBS. If the moderator handled the leash too tight on him, his people and followers could cry that Lehrer was incensed and unfair because of the comments. Thus, the stupid, angry liberals can't play fair.

A preemptive strike in case he lost his ass in the debates.

"I did fine. Lehrer was unfair to me over the comment about him and PBS."

It's pretending to make a tough choice, so they can wring their hands and say "Look, everyone loves Sesame Street, but we have no money. Dreadfully sorry, wish there was a better way". people like PBS, but most people are not going to vote based on PBS funding. It makes them sound serious on spending, and if they never actually cut the funding the can always say that it was such a small amount of money that it wasn't worth the fight.

The only time that I get pissed with PBS is during the pledge drives. I have no problem with them asking for money (and I fully admit that with the amount of programming that my family watches that we should donate).

My problem is that they totally fark up the programming schedule during a pledge drive. They put on awesomely great concerts and other stuff on during pledge drives that don't show up that often during any other time of the year and they interrupt my regularly scheduled programming.

And Willard Mittens Romney (or any GOPer) for that matter.. if you take away Super Why!, Curious George, Cat in the Hat (really any of the PBS Kids stuff), America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Country, Nova, Roadshow, Ken Burns, Huell Howser (for us CA Farkers), Masterpiece, and all a whole host of other shows than I promise you that Wayne Brady is gonna have to choke a biatch.

My thought process approximately 1 minute ago:

I'm bored. Hmm let's go see what's on Fark. "You can kill things and still like them" Oh god I hate it when they make up quotes and then put them in quotation marks like that's what he really said. *click link* Look this Santorum guy is farking braindead but there's literally no way he's going to say something that stu-Sweet Mother of God. He actually said that. Holy Flarking Shiat he actually said those words, verbatim.

If I facepalmed as hard as I wanted to right now I'd end up with a concussion.

/also, lol

fark you, Romney.

Disney just started Disney Jr. They would take World Girl, Super Why, and Sesame St. Sprout would also still be there.

More over, defund is not "kill" as this farknugget says. With everything that Sesame St is on (walkers, stuffed animals, food, and so on) they would make more than enough to survive off branding without taking tax dollars. The real fight here is over the adult programming and NPR.

Republicans are tards for using the kids programming as the starting point. Democrats are tards for acting like this has anything to do with children's programming.

Lets look at PBS funding:

In 2012, $455 million for Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

$222 M for direct grants to local public television stations;
$79.M for television programming grants;
$69.M for direct grants to local public radio stations;
$26.M for PBS support;
$22.M for grants for radio programming and national program production and acquisition;
$22.M for CPB administrative costs;
$7. M for the Radio Program Fund.

Contrast this with, for example, the war in Iraq, which cost us $700 million per day.

If only Saddam wasn't dead, we could convince the cons that he was behind PBS and that funding would flow right in.

It's not funding for PBS directly that's the issue, it's funding for stations. Somebody broke it down after you posted.

Even if all of those shows survived, the public TV stations wouldn't and Disney would have no reason to replace them. If you don't have cable or satellite, well, too bad.

Derp hurricane?

Son, if a comparison between 2008 and 2012 is any clue, the GOP 2016 race seriously risks ripping an Eye of Terror-esque rip in the time-space continuum between real-space and a Dimension of Derp. (That apocalypse the newage-rhymes-with-sewage folks who interpret the two Mayan stelae about Yolon Bokte Ku entirely too wrong and panicky? Turns out they were right...about the Derpocalypse.)

Especially since the dominionists will probably lead ANOTHER purge should they lose in 2012 and the candidates running against the likes of Santorum and Michelle Bachmann will be Todd Akin-esque in their idiocy. :P

And at which point I'll be asking for a lift from the nearest craftworld because I'm not sure I'll want to be on this planet anymore...

Aaaaand that leads to probably the big reason dominionists desperately want PBS stations defunded--so they can take over all that delicious non-profit spectrum space and licensing and turn it into even more space for televangelist garbage and Jesus Campers spewing hate speech on the public airwaves.

(Not joking on this one--they've actually admitted as much--and there is scads of precedent. Dominionists started targeting nonprofit licensing in general when the laws re televangelism were relaxed in the 70s (and as a way of getting around the Big Three networks, which had rules that they wouldn't carry televangelism on their networks unless it was from an official denominational representative--pretty much singlehandedly caused by Aimee Semple McPherson and "Father" Coughlin being behind the first televangelism scandals in the Golden Age of Radio), pretty much not only turned all non-governmental shortwave radio originating in the US into a toxic wasteland of dominionist and "Christian Patriot" derp but also attempted to steeplejack every public broadcasting frequency in the US via app-spamming for translators (using a very broad loophole that not only gave translator apps priority but required no regional restriction for not-for-profit stations--resulting in some cases in "translators" that were part of a de facto satellite-broadcaster station network with its "home station" literally across the country). They also have attempted the same thing with LPFM stations (until the FCC smacked them down) and TV translators, and "godcasters" Salem Communications and American Family Radio as well as TBN have aggressively gone after PBS and NPR affiliate licenses when these came up for renewal with intent to "steeplejack" them and turn them into dominionist hate-erade outlets. Seeing as this is ALREADY a pretty public strategy by some of the major players in dominionist broadcasting, if PBS stations were widely defunded...well, I'll eat my hat if they wouldn't try a massive steeplejacking of the licenses of public broadcasting stations as it'd be a hell of a windfall to them and--being pretty much the ONLY real large not-for-profit broadcasting group with a lobby (the NAE)--they would actually have priority in bidding for those licenses and channel allocations.)

Lost Thought 00: Seriously, why even bring up PBS at all? Why pick that example, out of the universe of possible examples, to actually get specific about something?

Because Conservatives are, generally speaking, paranoid assholes who believe any lie that's sufficiently shrouded in the American flag.

PBS is an easy target for them because it tends to appeal to a slightly more cerebral audience, and doesn't bother with the "OMG FOXNEWZ ALERT" style journalism that Roger Ailes has poisoned our discourse with. Remember, Conservatives are people who honestly believe that our corporate owned media complex somehow magically tilts to the left, which means that every news source needs to automatically be run through the patriotism 'litmus test' in their reptilian minds. If you're not waving the flag, you're a goddamned Communist pinko!

The Republican base is the great unwashed, and nothing warms their hearts more than having an enemy to point the finger at.
