are there any recorded instances of blindness killing anyone?

ManateeGag: are there any recorded instances of blindness killing anyone?

Probably not directly. But then again, I've never seen stupidity listed as a cause of death either, but we all know it can be a contributing factor.

Helen Keller died from starvation, because she could never find the attic door knob.

New discoveries point to the possibility that FDR had Guyane-Barr Syndrome (sp) and not polio. Many neuro-motor diseases have similar symptoms.

Make fun of Helen Keller but do you know how hard it was for her to write a diary in braille when she couldn't even hear the Nazis coming?

What he meant to say is that Lou Gehrig's disease needs an updated definition.

She had to record her discoveries on radium somehow, and a diary is as good a place as any.

Pretty much this, ALS isn't Lou Gehrig's disease anymore, whatever killed him is.

My father recently passed from ALS. In my research (being a bit of a medical nerd) it appears that ALS is like cancer once was. Everyone used to just call it cancer, now we know there's many different causes and many different possible outcomes, so we classify it by type. ALS appears that it might just be at the end of a line of possible pathologies. There are a lot of possible contributing factors, environmental, genetic, spontaneous, etc. We'll probably find out there's a lot of different causes. Motor neurons are under a lot of stress as it is, wouldn't take much external stressing to kill them all off..

It wasn't Helen Keller that died from being blind, It was Anne Frank. Jesus, haven't you seen The Miracle Worker?

Since he's being blamed for everything else, Bobby Valentine killed Lou Gehrig.

2012-10-05 03:20:39 PM
Of for the love of pete. Lou Gehrig died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Period. The cause of ALS is not known. Is it possible that multiple head traumas could cause it? Maybe, but I don't think there's any evidence to support this idea. Certainly most people who develop the disorder have not had any head trauma. ALS, a degradation of lower motor neurons, is typically diagnosed by differential diagnosis that eliminates all other possibilities. There is no single definitive diagnostic test for it. So releasing Gehrig's medical records is pointless. I think we're dealing a woman legislature who needs to have her medication adjusted.

Always a clue... when they name something that's seriously going to wreck your life and kill you they usually name it after the doctor who discovered it ONLY when there is no known cause or cure.

Good old Burrill Crohn discovered a disease, so now named Crohn's disease which is awful by itself. Why couldn't it be Brad Pitt or something more cool? From 1932 to date, still no known cause or cure. Didn't make me feel any better to know aything other than BTW you will forever be sick. Thanks.

This whole article is senseless BTW. Not a good use of time because IT DOESN'T MATTER.

So true.. Lost my father in law over a year ago to ALS. Pray you never ever have to deal with this disease on any level. I don't think old Lou knew what he was getting into lending his name to this.

I honestly don't understand what's happening here. It's not his family or the medical community asking for this. Medical experts have pointed out that evidence of CTE is only noticable on the actual brain tissue, so what the hell is the point? Is it just a state congressperson trying to make a name for themselves?

With the secrecy surrounding his death and treatment at Mayo it's pretty widely understood that he died from tertiary syphillis which wasn't treatable until after penicillin was commercially available in the late 40s. Baseball players were the rock stars of their time and they farked everything everywhere they went. Whores were even more common than they are now and even in the most conservative of towns everybody knew where the whore houses were. If you've ever skied Snowbird they have a run that is so wide and so easy that it was named for the main stretch of whorehouses in Salt Lake City at the time it was planned in the 60s and it is still called Second West Second South on any Snowbird maps.
